Thrissur is the Cultural Capital of the Indian state of Kerala.

Thrissur, originally Thiru Siva Peroor and previously known by its anglicised form as Trichur, is the fifth largest city, the third largest urban agglomeration in Kerala and the 20th largest in India. It is also the headquarters of the Thrissur District. The City is built around a 65-acre (26 ha) hillock called the Thekkinkadu Maidan which seats the Vadakkumnathan temple. Thrissur was once the capital of the Kingdom of Cochin. It is located 300 kilometres (186 mi) towards north-west of the state capital Thiruvananthapuram. Thrissur is also known as the "Cultural Capital of Kerala" because of its cultural, spiritual and religious leanings throughout history. One of the very famous cultural events in Thrissur includes Thrissur Pooram, which is world-famous and attracts quite a number of tourists and travellers.

Thrissur Pooram

Thrissur Pooram is an annual Hindu temple festival held in Kerala, India. It is held at the Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur every year on the Pooram day - the day when the moon rises with the Pooram star in the Malayalam Calendar month of Medam. It is the largest and most famous of all poorams.

Pooram pronounced [puːɾam] is an annual festival, which is celebrated in temples dedicated to goddesses Durga or Kali held especially in Valluvanadu area and other adjoining parts of north-central Kerala after the summer harvest. Harimattom pooram is the one of the famous pooram in Ernakulam. An example of a famous pooram is Thirumandhamkunnu Pooram which has an active participation of 11 Lakh people across the country. Peruvanam-Arattupuza pooram is celebrating its 1436th year in 2018.

He was the Kerala state secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the president of Kisan Sabha at the time of his death. He was a member of the Lok Sabha of India representing the Cannanore from 1971 to 1980 and Thrissur from 2004 to 2009. Chandrappan served as Member of the Legislative Assembly of Kerala from 1991 to 1996 representing the Chertala Assembly Constituency. He was educated at University College, Thiruvananthapuram and became a Social Worker.
