Thrissur railway station (station code:- TCR) [2] [3] is a railway station in Kerala, India. Thrissur also is known as the Cultural Capital of Kerala. Thrissur railway station is a major railway head in South India and A1 classified station operated by the Southern Railway zone of the Indian Railways and comes under the Thiruvananthapuram railway division. It is the busiest railway station in Kerala state in terms of rail traffic with 189 halting trains. At 97 crore (equivalent to 120 croreorUS$15 million in 2023) in financial year 2018–19, it is the fourth largest in terms of passenger revenues in Kerala and the eighth largest in Southern Railway. [4] Daily trains are available to Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Mangalore, and Hyderabad. This station lies on the Shoranur–Cochin Harbour section, which is one of the busiest railway corridors in Kerala. [5] It has three satellite stations, Punkunnam railway station and two minor stations, Ollur railway station and Mulankunnathukavu railway station. Thrissur railway station also connects to the temple town of Guruvayur by Thrissur–Guruvayur section.

Layout

The station has four platforms and two entrances, one at the eastern side which is the main entrance and the second one at western side which was opened in 2010. The station can be easily accessed from Kottappuram side and the KSRTC transport bus stand side. It has three railway over bridges connecting first platform to the second, third and fourth platforms. The station operate passenger trains and goods trains.

The station has five counters for non-reservation tickets in the east side, two ticket counters in the west side and ten automatic ticket vending machines (ATVM) in east also. The reservation counters for the long-distance is situated in the eastern side with four counters in a separate building.

The station has an air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned waiting hall for first-class and sleeper class passengers. The round-the-clock air-conditioned waiting hall is maintained with the cooperation of the Kudumbasree Mission. The hall has facilities such as TV, toilet, library, and kids entertainment section are there.

The passengers can access free Wi-fi facility inside the station provided by Google and railwire [6] [7]

The station has four retiring beds in air conditioned Double Bed category (Season price: 840, Non-Season price: 700); eight beds in air-conditioned Dormitory category (S-240, NS180) and one Non-air conditioned Single Bed category (S-390, NS-325).

Paid four wheeler and two-wheeler parking is available in the east and west entrance of the station. Pre-paid autorickshaw services are also made to the passengers.

The station also provides vegetarian and non-vegetarian food through the 1,830 sqft multi-cuisine food plaza. [8]

The station has three foot overbridges. One in the centre of the station and second and third in the south and north of the station.

There is a computer-controlled coach guidance system and a plasma screen for display of information to passengers. [9] [10] [11] [12] [13]

Other facilities available are Parcel booking office, Railway Mailing service (RMS) office, State Bank of India and Canara Bank Automated teller machine (ATMs).

Railway Police Station

Thrissur railway station has a railway police station with a Circle Inspector as the head and one Sub Inspectors. For the security of passengers, the Indian Railways have installed 21 high definition cameras which cover all the platforms and the ticket counters which is connected to the main system. There are two 42 inch LCD monitors which monitor all the visuals in the station. [14]

Future expansion plans

The Southern Railways is planning to quadruple the Shoranur–Cochin Harbour section by setting up a third and fourth line. The new line will cater to the International Container Transshipment Terminal, Kochi. [15] [16] A pedestrian flyover platform connecting all the platforms to the nearby KSRTC bus station is being planned.

The Shoranur–Mangaluru section is a railway segment of IR functioning under Palakkad Division of Southern Railway Zone. This is a 5 ft 6 in broad gauge electrified line which begins at the Shornur Junction railway station in Kerala and ends at the Mangaluru Central railway station in Karnataka. This line passes through major towns including Tirur, Kozhikode, Vatakara, Thalassery, Kannur, Payyannur, Kanhangad and Kasaragod.

Mulangunnathukavu railway station is in Mulakunnathukavu (മുളങ്കുന്നത്തുകാവ്), a panchayat in Puzhakkal block of Thrissur, which is situated between Wadakkanchery railway station and Punkunnam railway station in the busy Shoranur–Cochin Harbour section. Mulangunnathukavu railway station is operated by the Chennai-headquartered Southern Railways of the Indian Railways. The station is used as shuttle station for Thrissur railway station that is 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) south. It is just 250 metres (820 ft) away from State Highway 22 (Kerala). Ticketing is computerized and there are also basic parking facilities on site. A Food Corporation of India storage facility is located close nearby.

It lies in the Shoranur–Mangalore section of the Southern Railways. Almost all passenger, Superfast and express trains have a halt here. The station has three platforms and four tracks. Though no trains originate from this station, trains halting at the station connect the town to prominent cities in India such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, Kollam, Thrissur, Kannur, Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Pondicherry, New Delhi, Mangalore, Pune, Jaipur, Jammu Tawi, Okha, Ahmedabad, Kolkata and so on. This is an "A" class railway station which earns more than 30 crore per annum. It has now been upgraded to a Model Railway Station (Adarsh). The first railway line in Kerala was commissioned on 12 March 1861 from Beypore to Tirur. The proposed high-speed rail has a stop in Tirur. The new backside entrance and parking area are being set up on the eastern side of the station, opening to Tirur Market.

Wadakkancherry railway station is operated by the Chennai-headquartered Southern Railways of the Indian Railways. All passenger trains and some express trains stop here.

Irinjalakuda railway station is a railway station situated in Kallettumkara village, Kerala, India. Irinjalakuda town is 8 km away from the station. The station is located between Chalakudi and Nellayi on the busy Shoranur–Cochin Harbour section in Thrissur district. It is a busy and prominent station in terms of the number of passengers between Thrissur and Alwaye stations. Punalur railway station is the second-largest Railway Station In Kollam District located at Nedumkayam, Punalur on the Kollam–Sengottai branch line. It is the Gateway of Sabarimala. For Sabarimala devotees from Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Telangana and Karnataka, SCT–PUU is the easy way. The temples related to Sabarimala like Achankovil, Aryankavu, and Kulathuppuzha are Located near Punalur. The Kollam–Shencottah railway line is the first railway line in erstwhile Travancore state and is more than a century old. The Kollam–Sengottai section is part of the Kollam–Chennai metre-gauge rail route commissioned by the British during 1904. The line which was metre gauge has been completely converted into broad gauge and train services started.

There is new International airport from Kannur opened on 9 December 2018, other nearest airports are at Calicut and Mangalore. Thalassery, Payyanur, Taliparamba and Iritty are the other transport hubs.
