Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization is a board game for 24 players designed by Vlaada Chvatil and published by Czech Board Games in 2006. Its theme is the development of human civilization and the players determine the progress of their own civilization in different fields including culture, government, leadership, religion and science. [1] The game won multiple awards including the International Gamers Awards in 2007 and Game of the Year in Poland in 2010, where it was published as Cywilizacja: Poprzez Wieki. [2]


The game is about building a civilization, including urban buildings, governments, population, resource productions, military etc. By drawing and buying cards the players take their civilizations through 4 ages - beginning with classical antiquity and ending in the Modern Age. The game has spent over 5 years ranked in the top five board games at Board Game Geek.

In 2015 an updated version, entitled Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization, was published with updated artwork and with a number of rule tweaks. [3]

In 2017 an app version was announced [4] and released on 14 September for Android, iPhone and iPad. This version was nominated for the A-Train Award for Best Mobile Game at the New York Game Awards 2018. [5]

On March 26, 2018, a digital version of the game (similar to the app) was released [6] on Steam. [7]


Through the Ages is a civilization building game. Players take turns obtaining and spending resources to improve their civilization by increasing their population, building structures and developing their army while acquiring "civil cards" that allows them to also build wonders or appoint historical figures as their leaders, whose effects last until they are replaced with another leader or get obsolete, develop technologies to strengthen their assets or obtain extra resources. In the end of the turn, they also have the chance to obtain "military cards" that allows them in the beginning of their following turn to set historical events that can affect all players to be resolved later, colonize special territories, attack other civilizations to steal or destroy part of their resources or defend from such aggressions.

Victory is achieved by the player whose nation has accumulated the most "culture points" in the end of the game, which can be obtained in several different ways such as developing related buildings and wonders, using their leaders' special abilities or stealing them from other players using their military.

Through the Ages has predominantly received positive reviews. Michael Weston from Opinionated Gamers described it as "near-perfection in every way", [14] have labeled the game as "One of the best modern games ever made" and Board Games Land have described it as "most refined and detailed civilization board game on the market". [15]

Vladimír Chvátil[ˈvlaɟɪmiːr ˈxvaːcɪl], often known professionally as Vlaada Chvátil[ˈvlaːda ˈxvaːcɪl], is a Czech board game and video game designer. He became a recognizable name in the board game community following the publication of Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization in 2006 and thereafter his designs frequently made the top 100 list on BoardGameGeek. In 2016, he won the coveted "Spiel des Jahres" award for Codenames. In 2019, he entered the Origins Award Hall of Fame.

Azul is an abstract strategy board game designed by Michael Kiesling and released by Plan B Games in 2017. Based on Portuguese tiles called azulejos, in Azul players collect sets of similarly colored tiles which they place on their player board. When a row is filled, one of the tiles is moved into a square pattern on the right side of the player board, where it garners points depending on where it is placed in relation to other tiles on the board.

<i>Star Wars: Rebellion</i> (board game) 2016 strategy board game

Star Wars: Rebellion is an asymmetrical strategy board game designed by Corey Konieczka and published by Fantasy Flight Games in 2016. The game's setting is inspired by the original Star Wars trilogy. Players control either the Galactic Empire or the Rebel Alliance. Each player pursues a different path to victory, with the Galactic Empire playing seeking to find the Rebel Alliance player's base and destroy it, while the Rebel Alliance player attempts to avoid detection by the Galactic Empire and sabotage their efforts. The game received highly positive reviews and won numerous awards.

Gloomhaven is a cooperative board game for one to four players designed by Isaac Childres and published by Cephalofair Games in 2017. It is a campaign-based dungeon crawl game including a narrative campaign, 95 unique playable scenarios, and 17 playable classes. Since its introduction the game has been acclaimed by reviewers, and has been described as one of the best board games ever made.

<i>Root</i> (board game)

Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right is a 2018 asymmetric board game designed by Cole Wehrle, illustrated by Kyle Ferrin, and published by Leder Games. In Root, players compete for the most victory points through moving and battling using varying functions with unique abilities. Upon its release, Root received positive reviews, and was followed by four expansions. A digital version, developed by Dire Wolf Digital, was released in 2020.

Caverna: The Cave Farmers is a 2013 board game designed by Uwe Rosenberg. It is a complex worker placement strategy game that shares similarities in gameplay and theme with his earlier board game, Agricola, The game's theme revolves around helping a small dwarf family to settle a cave and nearby woodlands and to develop the setting through furnishing caves as well as converting forests into meadows, fields and pastures. Caverna received positive reviews from critics, two major expansions have also been released for the game.
