Thyresis is a Brazilian melodic death metal band formed in 2006 in João Pessoa, Paraíba. Thyresis is now composed of Victor Hugo Targino on bass and vocals, Eduardo Borsero (also in Soturnus) and Danilo Rufino on guitars and Demetrius Pedrosa (also in Metacrose) on drums.

Melodic death metal is a subgenre of death metal that employs highly melodic guitar riffs, often borrowing from traditional heavy metal. The style originated and developed in Sweden and the United Kingdom around 1993. The Swedish death metal scene did much to popularise the style, soon centering in the "Gothenburg metal” scene.

João Pessoa, Paraíba Municipality in Northeast, Brazil

João Pessoa is the capital of the state of Paraíba in Brazil. It was founded in 1585 and it is also known as the city where the sun rises first, because it is the easternmost city in the Americas at 34° 47′ 38″ W, 7° 9′ 28″ S. Its easternmost point is known as Ponta do Seixas. The city is often referred as "the second greenest in the world", with more than 7 square kilometres (2.7 sq mi) of forested land, second only to Paris, France, though such claim seems to be just a publicity stunt from the then mayor during Earth Summit.

Paraíba State of Brazil

Paraíba is a state of Brazil. It is located in the Brazilian Northeast, and it is bordered by Rio Grande do Norte to the north, Ceará to the west, Pernambuco to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Paraíba is the third most densely populated state of the Northeast; João Pessoa, the sea-bordered state capital, and Campina Grande, in the interior, rank among the fifteen-largest municipalities in the Northeast of Brazil.



Formation and first demo (2006-2008)

Thyresis was formed in 2006 in João Pessoa, Brazil, by Josué "Kain" de Queiroz (vocals), Danilo Rufino (guitars) and brothers Andrei Targino (guitars) and Victor Hugo Targino (bass). The group started writing songs together around the same time band Soturnus was looking for a new guitarist, intending to record its first album, When Flesh Becomes Spirit ; Andrei auditioned to join the band and shortly after starting recording the album, left Thyresis. He was replaced by João Pachá (ex-Befamal, ex-Madness Factory, ex-Dissidium, ex-Rest In Disgrace) in 2007, year the band started recording its first demo entitled Journey Beyond Infinity , released in January 2008. [1] Shortly before the release of the demo, drummer Demetrius Pedrosa (Metacrose, ex-Dissidium) joined the band and they went on a small local tour, playing in local concerts and festivals, such as the tenth edition of Brazilian festival Forcaos, in Fortaleza, Ceará, [2] with bands such as Krisiun and The Ordher, and third edition of Aumenta Que É Rock, in João Pessoa, with band Torture Squad as headliner. [3] [4] That same year, singer Josué left the band due to personal reasons, and bassist Victor Hugo took the position.

Fortaleza Municipality in Brazil

Fortaleza is the state capital of Ceará, located in Northeastern Brazil. It belongs to the Metropolitan mesoregion of Fortaleza and microregion of Fortaleza. Located 2285 km from Brasilia, the federal capital, the city has developed on the banks of the creek Pajeú, and its name is an allusion to Fort Schoonenborch, which gave rise to the city, built by the Dutch during their second stay in the area between 1649 and 1654. The motto of Fortaleza, present in its coat of arms is the Latin word Fortitudine, which means "with strength/courage".

First album (2009-2011)

In 2009, João Pachá left the band and moved to Germany to continue his work with his other band, Rest In Disgrace. Shortly after, Thyresis started the production of its first album, unnamed at the time. Produced and mixed by bassist and singer Victor Hugo, the album, later entitled Thyresis , took around two years to be complete and released, and it was mastered by Swedish producer Jens Bogren at Fascionation Street Studios, in Örebro, Sweden. After the recordings were done, in January 2011, the band was again complete with guitarist Eduardo Borsero, from Soturnus.

According to the band's bassist and singer, the name of the band and the album is also explained in the concept.

Jens Peter Daniel Bogren is a record producer, mixer and recording engineer who has worked on albums by Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Sepultura, Arch Enemy, At the Gates, Katatonia, Babymetal, Soilwork, James LaBrie, Moonspell, God Forbid, Kreator, Devin Townsend, Ihsahn, Dark Tranquillity, Paradise Lost, Amon Amarth, Dragonforce, The Ocean, Haken, Between the Buried and Me, Rotting Christ, Symphony X, Myrath, Angra and Dir En Grey amongst others. Bogren lives in Örebro, Sweden and is based at Fascination Street Studios.

Musical style, influences and lyrical themes

Thyresis' style consists of a fusion between melodic death metal, thrash metal, and traditional heavy metal. [5] Influenced by bands such as In Flames, At The Gates, Dark Tranquillity, but also Iron Maiden, Metallica and Blind Guardian, Thyresis frontman Victor Hugo Targino says power metal plays an important role in the band's sound as well. [6] Their lyrical themes usually revolves around internal struggles and critiques to society and politics.

Thrash metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music characterized by its overall aggression and often fast tempo. The songs usually use fast percussive beats and low-register guitar riffs, overlaid with shredding-style lead work. The lyrics often deal with social issues and criticism of The Establishment, using direct and denunciatory language, an approach borrowed from hardcore punk.

In Flames Swedish metal band

In Flames are a Swedish heavy metal band, which was formed by guitarist Jesper Strömblad in 1990 in Gothenburg, Sweden. Along with At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity, In Flames is responsible for developing the genres known as Swedish death metal and melodic death metal.

Dark Tranquillity Swedish band

Dark Tranquillity is a Swedish melodic death metal band from Gothenburg. They are considered one of the pioneering acts of the Gothenburg metal scene, which also includes bands such as In Flames and At the Gates. Dark Tranquillity is regarded as the Gothenburg fathers in the film entitled Out of Nothing: A DT Documentary released by Century Media, which was filmed in Gothenburg, Sweden in April 2009.

Terrorizer described the site as "a fully-exhaustive list of pretty much every metal band ever, with full discographies, an active forum and an interlinking members list that shows the ever-incestuous beauty of the metal scene".
