Timothy John Gane (born 12 July 1964) is an English songwriter and guitarist who co-founded Stereolab with his then-partner Lætitia Sadier. [3] [4]

Biography

Gane was born in Ilford, Essex, and began his musical career experimenting with harsh noise in the early 1980s, under the alias Unkommunitim, releasing self-financed cassettes on Black Dwarf Wreckordings along with fellow Unkommuniti members Kallous Boys and other noise projects. [4] [5]

He was a key member of McCarthy from 1985 until their breakup in 1990. [4]

Stereolab

Gane later formed Stereolab with Lætitia Sadier. For the first incarnation of the band, they enlisted ex-Chills bassist Martin Kean, drummer Joe Dilworth and Gina Morris on backing vocals. [6] In 1993, the band were signed to the American major-label Elektra and were released from their recording contract in 2004. [6] [7] In 2009, Stereolab announced their hiatus. [8] Stereolab reunited for a tour in 2019 to support a series of vinyl reissues. [9]

Turn On, Gane's side project with Sean O'Hagan, who Gane worked with in Stereolab, released their self-titled debut in 1997.

Cavern of Anti-Matter

In 2013, he released Blood-Drums under the moniker "Cavern of Anti-Matter", a band formed together with Holger Zapf and Dilworth. [10] It was followed by the 2016 album Void Beats / Invocation Trex on Duophonic Records. [11] It featured contributions by Bradford Cox and Peter Kember and Jan St. Werner. [12] Live the band was reduced to a duo. [13] In January 2017, Blood Drums was re-released through Duophonic. [14]

In 2014, Gane compiled the tracks for Sky Records Kollektion 1, a collection of tracks from the German electronic-rock label, issued by Bureau B. In 2016, he presented FACT mix 544 for Fact Magazine. [15]

Cavern of Anti-Matter provided the original soundtrack for the 2018 British horror comedy film In Fabric . [16]

Personal life

Gane and Lætitia Sadier were romantically involved throughout Stereolab's early years but separated in 2002. [17] He lives in Berlin. [8]

<i>Dots and Loops</i> 1997 studio album by Stereolab

Dots and Loops is the fifth studio album by English-French rock band Stereolab. It was released on 22 September 1997 and was issued by Duophonic Records and Elektra Records. The band co-produced the album with John McEntire and Andi Toma, and recording took place at their respective studios in Chicago and Düsseldorf. It was their first album to be recorded straight to Digital Audio Tape and produced with Pro Tools. The album explores jazz and electronic sounds, and is influenced by bossa nova and 1960s pop music. Its lyrics address matters such as consumerism, the "spectacle", materialism, and human interaction.

<i>Switched On</i> 1992 compilation album by Stereolab

Switched On is a compilation of Stereolab's first three releases, and was originally released in 1992. The album's name is in tribute to Switched-On Bach and other similar titles from the late 1960s to 1970s that feature Moog synthesizers as the primary instrument. Switched On was later licensed to Slumberland Records for a US release, and Rough Trade Germany, for that country, both in 1992.

Duophonic Ultra High Frequency Disks Limited is a British independent record label formed by English-French rock band Stereolab in 1991. The label has two imprints: Duophonic Ultra High Frequency Disks for UK Stereolab releases licensed to various labels worldwide, and Duophonic Super 45s for releases of other artists and certain Stereolab UK-only releases. Duophonic's first release was Stereolab's debut EP Super 45 (1991), limited to 880 copies; of these, forty copies had handmade covers that were produced by Martin Pike in his father's garage.

Lætitia Sadier is a French musician, best known as a founding member of the London-based avant-pop band Stereolab. In 1996, while Stereolab was still active, she formed the side project Monade. In 2009 – the same year Stereolab became inactive – she ended the Monade project and began to perform solo work under her own name; her current band is known as the Lætitia Sadier Source Ensemble. She has frequently performed guest vocals and collaborations with other artists.
