Timotha Lanae (pronounced tə-MOTH-ə lə-NAY) is an international and multi-octave singer-songwriter, playwright and actress. [1] Her debut album Red reached #1 on the UK Soul Charts. [2] Her follow-up EP Rewind reached #1 on the Sweet Rhythms Chart and peaked at #2 on the UK Soul Chart. Elements of soul, R&B, funk, jazz, and hip hop can be found in Lanae's music. She cites Marvin Gaye, Maxwell, Sade, The Isley Brothers, Gap Band, and Bonnie Raitt as some of her main influences.

Early life and education

Named after her father Timothy, Lanae was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and currently resides in Los Angeles, California. Growing up she could often be found on either the piano or recruiting the local neighborhood kids to participate in her self-produced and directed backyard concerts. Lanae attended the University of Minnesota, where she majored in elementary education with an emphasis in mathematics. Lanae received a scholarship to pursue her master's degree in education at the University of Minnesota; however, because of her passion for creating and experimenting with music she decided to leave her graduate program and pursue her career in music and the arts.

Music career

During her college years, Lanae was regularly performing at some of Minneapolis’ top jazz venues, where she met her mentor Severin Behnen, a jazz pianist and instructor at MacPhail Center for Music. Shortly after leaving her graduate program, Lanae began working closely with international producer Ben Obi at Savannah Street Music. Lanae's debut album Red reached #1 on the UK Soul Charts. [3] Her single "People Pleaser" peaked at number #6 on the UK Soul Charts. [4] Her second project, Rewind, reached #1 on the UK Sweet Rhythms Chart, and was "strongly recommended" by SoulTracks. [5] August 2015 marked her third #1 on the UK Charts for the contribution of her single "8 Days 'Til Spring", to the So Soulful Collection Vol. 2. The So Soulful Collection Vol. 2 was also named “The Best Soul Compilation of the Year” by SoulTracks. [6]

Theater/acting career

After being cast as “Anita” in West Side Story in high school, Lanae has gone on to perform across the globe from the US to Japan. She has toured and performed in productions such as: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat , Hello, Dolly! (as Dolly), West Side Story , H.M.S Pinafore , The Producers, Singin’ in the Rain , Ragtime , Footloose, All Shook Up, Swing!, Irving Berlin’s Easter Parade , Beehive, Xanadu, For the Sake of the Children and Johnny Baseball. She was named Outstanding Actress in a Musical by the Minneapolis Star Tribune for her role in Respect: a Musical Journey of Women. [7]

Lanae has also been featured on-camera in TV and film as an actress, singer, spokesperson, and voice over talent. Her work has appeared in film festivals including the Cannes Film Festival. Her credits include: ABC Family: The Nine Lives of Chloe King (music featured: Indigo), Rosie, Soul Survivors, Elmer’s Glue, Best Buy, Target, General Mills, K-Mart, American Idol, The Guthrie Theater Presents: Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S Pinafore on PBS, U Care, Keranique and Once Upon a Child.

Sly and Robbie Jamaican rhythm section and production duo

Charlotte Kelly is a British singer-songwriter, composer, arranger, and record producer. Kelly rose to fame in the mid-1990s as one of the lead singers of British R&B group Soul II Soul, one of the London's best-selling groups of all time. She performed lead vocals on their single "I Care" for their fourth studio album Volume V: Believe (1995). She continued to record and perform with the group until the release of their final studio album Time for Change (1997). Mixes is the fifth remix album by Australian recording artist Kylie Minogue. It was released on 3 August 1998, by Deconstruction Records. The album contains remixes of tracks from her sixth studio album, Impossible Princess (1997). The remixes were done by DJs such as Brothers in Rhythm, Junior Vasquez, and Todd Terry. The remixes was influenced by various genres of dance music, such as electronica and dance-pop. The album was originally scheduled for a 1999 release, but Deconstruction pre-poned the release date of Mixes in the United Kingdom to August 1998, since the Australian counterpart, Impossible Remixes (1998), had been released earlier than its original date. With favourable critical reception, Mixes charted in the United Kingdom at number sixty-three on the UK Albums Chart, her highest remix album at the time. The Brothers in Rhythm remix of "Too Far" was released as a promotional single in the UK and North America.

William Bell (singer) American soul singer and songwriter

William Bell is an American soul singer and songwriter. As a performer, he is probably best known for his debut single, 1961's "You Don't Miss Your Water"; 1968's top 10 hit in the UK "Private Number", a duet with Judy Clay; and his only US top 40 hit, 1976's "Tryin' to Love Two", which also hit No. 1 on the R&B chart. Upon the death of Otis Redding, Bell released the well-received memorial song "A Tribute to a King".

Beverley Knight is an English recording artist and musical theatre actress. She released her first album, The B-Funk, in 1995. Natalia Sheppard, better known by her stage names MC Tali and Tali, is a New Zealand drum and bass artist, best known for her 2004 hit "Lyric on My Lip", which reached #39 in the UK Singles Chart. Kelela American singer

Kelela Mizanekristos is an American singer and songwriter. She made her debut in the music industry with the release of her 2013 mixtape Cut 4 Me. In 2015, she released Hallucinogen, an EP which deals with the beginning, middle, and end of a relationship in reverse chronological order. Her debut studio album, Take Me Apart, was released in 2017 to critical acclaim.

UK garage, abbreviated as UKG, is a genre of electronic dance music which originated in England in the early to mid-1990s. The genre was most clearly inspired by garage house, but also incorporates elements from R&B, jungle and dance-pop. It is defined by percussive, shuffled rhythms with syncopated hi-hats, cymbals and snares, and may include either 4/4 house kick patterns or more irregular "2-step" rhythms. Garage tracks also commonly feature 'chopped up' and time-stretched or pitch-shifted vocal samples complementing the underlying rhythmic structure at a tempo usually around 130 BPM.

Black Sheep (group) American hip hop group

Black Sheep is an American hip hop duo from Queens, New York, United States, composed of Andres "Dres" Vargas Titus and William "Mista Lawnge" McLean. The duo was from New York but met as teenagers in Sanford, North Carolina, where both of their families relocated. The group was part of the Native Tongues collective, which included the Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, and De La Soul. After getting together in 1989, Black Sheep debuted in 1991 with the hit song "Flavor of the Month" and later released its first album, A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, which gained them praise and recognition in the hip-hop community for the album's unique rhythms and intelligent, often humorous lyrics. After six years together, Black Sheep disbanded in 1995, citing creative differences.

"Come Together" is a song by American singer Chris Brown featuring vocals from singer H.E.R., taken from his ninth studio album Indigo (2019). The song received critical acclaim from music critics who noted it as one of the album's highlights, praising the singers' performances, its songwriting and production. The song was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
