Tin Hau (Chinese :天后) is a station on the Island line of the Hong Kong MTR rapid transit system.

Location

Like all other Island line stations, Tin Hau is located along the northern shore of Hong Kong Island. Named after the nearby Tin Hau Temple, the station is actually at the core of the Causeway Bay neighbourhood; however the station's presence has caused the surrounding area to be colloquially called "Tin Hau".

The station lies to the east of Victoria Park, with the Citicorp Centre to the north. The Hong Kong Central Library and Lin Fa Kung Garden are to the south of the station, as is the Causeway Bay Sports Ground.^[1]

History

Tin Hau station was part of the original plan for the MTR, dating back to the Hong Kong Mass Transport Study in 1967.^[2] It was not, however, in the Modified Initial System, which laid out the first few phases of the MTR system. Construction on the Island line began in 1981, with the first section of the line, which included Tin Hau, opening on 31 May 1985. The Causeway Bay Magistracy was demolished to make way for the station, with the magistrates' courts moving to the Wanchai Tower.^[3] From 2000, MTR retrofitted platform screen doors at thirty underground stations, one of them being Tin Hau; the project was finished in 2006.^[4]

Station layout

Due to the limited space beneath Causeway Road and Hennessy Road, under which the Island line runs, Tin Hau utilises a stacked platform layout. Eastbound trains using platform 1 stop on the upper level, while westbound trains using platform 2 stop on the lower level. In addition, there are two underground levels above the platforms: the concourse containing faregates and shops and the walkway which connects Exits A1-A2 and B.

Causeway Bay is an area and a bay on Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong, straddling the border of the Eastern and the Wan Chai districts. It is a major shopping, leisure and cultural centre in Hong Kong, with a number of major shopping centres. The Tsuen Wan line is one of the eleven lines of the metro network in Hong Kong's MTR. It is indicated in red on the MTR map.

The Kwun Tong line is a heavy-rail rapid transit line of the MTR network in Hong Kong, coloured green on the MTR map. Starting at Whampoa in Hung Hom and ending at Tiu Keng Leng in Tseung Kwan O, Sai Kung, the route has 17 stations and takes 35 minutes to complete. The Kwun Tong line is one of the busiest railway lines on the network connecting the central and the eastern portions of Kowloon via Wong Tai Sin. The line is mostly underground, but includes a lengthy elevated section, and runs generally in an east-west direction. During the morning rush hour, the Kwun Tong line utilises 33 trains running at 2.1-minute-intervals to achieve a route capacity of 85,000 pphpd.

Tai Wo Hau is an MTR station between Tsuen Wan and Kwai Hing stations on the Tsuen Wan line. It serves the areas of Kwai Yin Court and Tai Wo Hau Estate in the Kwai Tsing District, and some resited villages in the Tsuen Wan District of Hong Kong. These villages were originally in Tsuen Wan town centre, being moved for new town development.

Central is an MTR station located in the Central area of Hong Kong Island. The station's livery is firebrick red but brown on the Tsuen Wan line platforms. The station is the southern terminus of the Tsuen Wan line, a stop on the Island line, and connects to Hong Kong station, which serves the Tung Chung line and the Airport Express.

Lam Tin is a station on the Hong Kong MTR Kwun Tong line built as a part of the extension to Quarry Bay. The station is linked to the nearby hillside community of Lam Tin by a series of escalators.

Ho Man Tin is an underground MTR rapid transit station on the Kwun Tong line and the Tuen Ma line, located beneath Valley Road in Lo Lung Hang, as part of the Sha Tin to Central Link project. The station's lower platforms opened on 23 October 2016 along with Whampoa station as part of the Kwun Tong line extension, while the upper platforms of the Tuen Ma line opened on 27 June 2021.

Wan Chai is a station on the Island line of the Hong Kong MTR. The livery colour is lime green. It serves the Wan Chai locality within the district of the same name. The station platforms are located underneath Hennessy Road, a major trunk road connecting the Central and Eastern districts.

Causeway Bay is a station on the MTR network on Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. The station is between Wan Chai and Tin Hau stations on the Island line. It serves the locality of East Point within Wan Chai District.

Fortress Hill is a station on the Island line of the Hong Kong MTR system. The station is located in the Fortress Hill section of Hong Kong on the eponymous island.
