Tinnelva (also known as Tinne or Tinnåa) is a river in Notodden Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The 29-kilometre (18 mi) long river flows between two lakes: Tinnsjå and Heddalsvatnet. The river begins at the village of Tinnoset draining from the lake Tinnsjå. It flows to the south and east, past the village of Gransherad and the Gransherad Church, past the Lisleherad Church further downstream, and finally emptying into the lake Heddalsvatnet at the town of Notodden. There are several waterfalls along the river: Årlifossene, Grønvollfoss, Svelgfoss and Tinnfoss. These waterfalls are exploited for hydroelectric power generation since the river drops about 138 metres (453 ft) over these four waterfalls. The hydroelectric power stations along the river have a combined installed capacity of 182 megawatts (244,000 hp ). [1]
Notodden (help·info) is a municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Aust-Telemark. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Notodden. Other population centres include the villages of Bolkesjø, Gransherad, Heddal, Hjuksebø, Hjuksevelta, Rudsgrendi, Tinnoset, and Yli.
Rjukan is a town in Tinn Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The town is also the administrative centre of Tinn Municipality. The town is located in the Vestfjorddalen valley, between the lakes Møsvatn and Tinnsjå. The municipal council of Tinn declared town status for Rjukan in 1996. The town is located about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) to the west of the village of Miland and about 20 kilometres (12 mi) to the northwest of the village of Tuddal.
Heddal is a former municipality in Telemark county, Norway. The 407-square-kilometre (157 sq mi) municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1964. The area is now part of Notodden Municipality. The administrative centre was the village of Heddal where the Heddal Stave Church.
Tinnsjå is one of the largest lakes in Norway measuring about 51.56-square-kilometre (19.91 sq mi). It is also one of the deepest lakes in Europe, reaching a depth of 460 metres (1,510 ft). Tinnsjå is located in the municipalities of Tinn and Notodden in Vestfold og Telemark county. At its source in the west, the Måna river flows out of the lake Møsvatn and past the town of Rjukan into Tinnsjå. From the north, the river Mår flows from the lakes Mår, Gøystavatn, and Kalhovdfjorden into Tinnsjå. Tinnsjå is part of the Skien watershed, and it drains via the Tinnelva river in the south, down to the lake Heddalsvatn.
Tinnoset is a village in Notodden Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The village is located at the southernmost end of the large lake Tinnsjå, where the river Tinnelva begins flowing south out of the lake. It is about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) south of the village of Rudsgrendi, about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) north of the village of Gransherad, and about 20 kilometres (12 mi) to the west of the village of Bolkesjø.
Hjuksevelta or simply Hjukse is a village in Notodden Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The village is located about half-way between the town of Notodden and the village of Nordagutu (in Midt-Telemark Municipality. The village is located on the hills overlooking the eastern shore of the lake Heddalsvatnet. In 2020, the Hjuksebø area became part of Notodden Municipality. Prior to that time, it was part of the old Sauherad Municipality.
Gransherad is a former municipality in Telemark county, Norway. The 417-square-kilometre (161 sq mi) municipality existed from 1860 until its dissolution in 1964. The area is now part of Notodden Municipality and Kongsberg Municipality. The administrative centre was the village of Gransherad where Gransherad Church is located.
Rudsgrendi or Rugsgrend is a village in Notodden Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The village is located on the western shore of the large lake Tinnsjå, halfway between the village of Gransherad and the town of Rjukan. On the opposite side of the lake lies the village of Hovin. The village of Tinnoset lies about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) to the south.
Sira is a river in southwestern Norway. The 152-kilometre (94 mi) long river flows begins in the Sirdalsheiane mountains near the borders of Agder and Rogaland counties. The headwaters of the river is the lake Ytre Storevatnet and it flows south through the Sirdalen valley in the municipalities of Sirdal and Flekkefjord. The river flows through the large lakes Sirdalsvatnet and Lundevatnet before heading south on the Agder/Rogaland county border. At the village of Åna-Sira the river empties into the Åna fjord. The river runs through several large villages such as Åna-Sira, Sira, Tonstad, Lunde, and Kvæven. The river drains the 1,902.7-square-kilometre (734.6 sq mi) watershed. The Tonstad Hydroelectric Power Station is powered by water from the waterfalls along this river.
Hovin is a former municipality in Telemark county, Norway. The 302.5-square-kilometre (116.8 sq mi) municipality existed from 1886 until its dissolution in 1964. The area is now divided between Tinn Municipality and Notodden Municipality. The administrative centre was the village of Hovin. The other main village in the municipality was Rudsgrendi on the opposite side of the lake Tinnsjå.
Sauland is the administrative centre of Hjartdal Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The village is located at the confluence of the Hjartdøla and Skogsåa rivers, which together form the river Heddøla. The European route E134 highway runs through the village. The village of Hjartdalsbygda lies about 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) to the west, the village of Tuddal lies about 20 kilometres (12 mi) to the north, the village of Gransherad lies about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) to the northeast, the village of Heddal lies about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) to the east, and the town of Notodden lies about 20 kilometres (12 mi) to the east.
The Måna or Måne is a river in Tinn Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The 32-kilometre (20 mi) river flows from the lake Møsvatn through the Vestfjorddalen valley and the town of Rjukan to the large lake Tinnsjå near the village of Miland. It is part of the Skiensvassdraget drainage basin.
Bolkesjø is a village in Notodden Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The village is located along the Norwegian county road 37, about 18 kilometres (11 mi) to the northeast of the village of Gransherad and about 20 kilometres (12 mi) to the north of the town of Notodden. The village is located along a small lake that is also named Bolkesjø. There are also hotels and resorts in the village. The mountain Bletoppen lies about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) to the northwest.
Heddalsvatnet is a lake in Notodden Municipality and Midt-Telemark Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The 13.2-square-kilometre (5.1 sq mi) lake is located just south of the town of Notodden. The village of Heddal and the Heddalen valley are located to the northwest of the lake.
Heddøla is a river in the municipalities of Hjartdal and Notodden in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. It starts from the junction of the rivers Hjartdøla and Skogsåa in the village of Sauland and it flows through the Heddal valley ending at the lake Heddalsvatnet.
The Rjukan–Notodden Industrial Heritage Site is a World Heritage Site in Vestfold & Telemark county, Norway, created to protect the industrial landscape around Lake Heddalsvatnet and Vestfjorddalen valley. The landscape is centered on the plant built by the Norsk Hydro company to produce calcium nitrate fertilizer from atmospheric nitrogen using the Birkeland–Eyde process. The complex also includes hydroelectric power plants, railways, transmission lines, factories, and workers' accommodation and social institutions in the towns of Notodden and Rjukan.

It sits about 17 kilometres (11 mi) to the southwest of the village of Bolkesjø, about 22 kilometres (14 mi) to the northwest of the town of Notodden, about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) to the northwest of the village of Heddal, and about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) to the northeast of the village of Sauland. Gransherad Church is located in the village.
Hovin is a village in Tinn Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The village is located just up the hill from the eastern shore of the large lake Tinnsjå. It is located about 22 kilometres (14 mi) south of the village of Tinn Austbygd and about 35 kilometres (22 mi) north of the town of Notodden.
Gransherad Church is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Notodden Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. It is located in the village of Gransherad. It is the church for the Gransherad parish which is part of the Øvre Telemark prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1849 using plans drawn up by the architect Hans Linstow. The church seats about 250 people.
