Tio Tek Djien (Chinese :赵德真; pinyin :Zhào Dé-zhēn; Pe̍h-ōe-jī :Tiō Tek-chin, also Djin; 2 December 1895 – 17 December 1975), also styled T. D. Tio, Jr., was a Chinese Indonesian stage manager and playwright turned film producer.
Tio Tek Djien was born in Nganjuk, East Java, on 2 December 1895.The son of a rich ethnic Chinese family, he was well-educated for the time, graduating from a senior high school with a focus on economics. When attending a theatrical performance at Taman Hiburan Orion in Pekalongan, owned by his parents, Tio fell in love with the troupe's star, Miss Riboet. When the troupe left Pekalongan, Tio joined them. He and Miss Riboet later married, and Tio found some work as a reporter.
In 1925, Tio established his own theatrical troupe, casting Riboet as the star. This troupe, originally titled the Orion Opera but later known as Miss Riboet's Orion, often performed works written by Tio; Njoo Cheong Seng eventually took over most of Tio's writing duties, leaving the owner to handle managerial duties.With a keen eye for marketing, caused in part by his earlier ventures at journalism, in 1927 Tio asked one of his employees, Nelson Wong, to make a film starring Riboet. This project was ultimately scrapped after Tio decided she was not photogenic. Though he did not complete a film during this time, Indonesian film historian Misbach Yusa Biran credits Tio with spurring the interest of ethnic Chinese businessmen in the local film industry.
Though Tio and his Orion challenged the traditionally popular forms of theatre with their Europeanized aspects, including plays featuring everyday issues, they were not the only active troupe. In 1926 Willy Piedro and his wife Dewi Dja established Dardanella, and by 1931 the competition from Dardanella had led to an advertising war between the two troupes, each focusing on their best-received works: Gagak Solo from Orion and Dr Samsi from Dardanella.Ultimately Orion was unable to compete and had lost much of its popularity by the late 1930s. During the Japanese occupation (1942–45) and subsequent Indonesian National Revolution (1945–49), Orion was disbanded. In 1950 Tio attempted to reunite the cast, but was unsuccessful.
Unable to reunite Orion, Tio instead turned to the burgeoning post-Revolution Indonesian film industry. He made his feature film debut as executive producer of Topeng Besi in 1953, followed by Machluk Raksasa. In 1954 he directed and produced Melarat tapi Sehat, based on a stage play he had written while with Orion.Riboet died in 1965, leaving Tio a widower.
Tio spent his last years as a landlord, surviving on the income from a number of rental homes.Biran, in his memoirs, recalls that Tio was greatly distraught by the low quality of films in the 1970s, as well as the increasingly poor state of the national theatre. In 1975 Tio received an award from Governor of Jakarta Ali Sadikin for his contributions to Indonesian's film industry. He died four months later, on 17 December 1975.
Eulis Atjih is a 1927 film from the Dutch East Indies ; it was the second feature film produced in the country, after Loetoeng Kasaroeng in 1926. The silent film follows the lives of a native Indonesian family sent into poverty by the husband's splurging. Eulis Atjih was a commercial success in the Indies, but failed in international markets.
Lilly van Java, also known as Melatie van Java, is a 1928 film from the Dutch East Indies directed by Nelson Wong. Initially meant to be produced by South Sea Film and shot by an American director, the film – which follows a woman told to marry a man she does not love – was ultimately completed by Wong's Halimoen Film. Details on its cast and performance are contradictory, although the film is recognised as the first of a long series of ethnic Chinese-produced films in the country. It is likely a lost film.
The Wong brothers were three ethnic Chinese film directors and cameramen active in the cinema of the Dutch East Indies. The sons of an Adventist preacher, the brothers – Nelson (1895–1945), Joshua (1906–1981), and Othniel (1908–1986) – received much of their education in the United States before going to Shanghai and establishing The Great Wall Productions.
Njoo Cheong Seng was a Chinese-Indonesian playwright and film director. Also known by the pen name Monsieur d'Amour, he wrote more than 200 short stories, novels, poems and stage plays during his career; he is also recorded as directing and/or writing eleven films. He married four times during his life and spent several years travelling throughout southeast and south Asia with different theatre troupes. His stage plays are credited with revitalising theatre in the Indies.
Dardanella was a touring theatre company from the Dutch East Indies established by Willy A. Piedro in 1926. Arising from a background of musical theatre, the troupe focused on realistic stories, both adaptations of foreign works and original stage plays about life in the Indies. Starring Dewi Dja' and Tan Tjeng Bok, the troupe performed original works by Piedro and Andjar Asmara. Popular both in the Indies and abroad, Dardanella dissolved during an international tour after 1936. Several of its members later went into film.
Astaman was an Indonesian actor active from the 1910s until the mid-1970s. He was a leading actor in the influential theatre company Dardanella and, after entering the film industry with 1940s Kartinah, acted in 43 films.
Sejarah Film 1900–1950: Bikin Film di Jawa is a 2009 history of the cinema of the Dutch East Indies written by Misbach Yusa Biran. It was published by Komunitas Bambu in collaboration with the Jakarta Arts Council and well received. The book was written by Biran before his death, three years later.
Matula is a 1941 film from the Dutch East Indies which was directed by Tan Tjoei Hock and produced by The Teng Chun of Java Industrial Film. The black-and-white film, now likely lost, follows a young man who tries to give a woman's soul to a shaman as payment for being made handsome.

Miss Riboet's Orion, originally known as the Orion Opera, was a theatrical troupe active in the Dutch East Indies in the 1920s and early 1930s. Established by the husband and wife team Tio Tek Djien and Miss Riboet, the company travelled throughout the Indies and performed various acts, particularly those with action scenes. It was disbanded in 1942, having lost much of its popularity due to competition with Dardanella.

Rempo Urip was an Indonesian film director. He began his career in the theatre, serving as an extra and footballer for the Dardanella theatre company beginning in 1934. After six years and three troupes, Urip entered the film industry, working as a distributor for Oriental Film and assistant director for Java Industrial Film. He returned to the theatre during the Japanese occupation (1942–1945) and national revolution (1945–1949). In 1951 he joined Djamaluddin Malik's Persari as a director, completing thirteen films for the company before it closed in 1958. He continued as a freelance director until 1977.
Darussalam was an Indonesian actor who appeared in more than seventy films in his forty-year career. Born in Bengkulu, he studied to be nurse before migrating to theatre during the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies, marrying Netty Herawaty while with the troupe Irama Masa. The couple spent the remainder of the occupation and the ensuing revolution touring the archipelago with a number of troupes. In 1949, Darussalam and Herawaty made their feature film debut in Fred Young's Saputangan, appearing in seven further Young productions before migrating to Djamaluddin Malik's Persari. During their eight years with the company, Darussalam and Herawaty travelled to the Philippines and Singapore and found popularity among audiences, though Darussalam remained in his wife's shadow.
