Tioga Commissary is located in Tioga, Louisiana. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 16, 1986.
Located north of Alexandria the Commissary is part of the Tioga Heritage Park and Museum [2]
In 1905 Stephen Lee purchased a sawmill, built by Julius Levin, and surrounding land from Daniel F. Clark, owner of Union Lumber Company. [3] Lee constructed the rural Commissary to meet the needs of his employees at Lee Lumber Company and Tioga & Southeastern Railway Company. The building served as a department store, grocery, post office, and general gathering place for decades.
The Tioga Commissary was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 16, 1986.
According to the Historic Landmark plaque, after the sawmill's closure in 1925 the Commissary was sold to Sam Allen, who operated it until 1947. Soon after, it was sold to longtime employee Rudolph Merritt, who operated the community store until its closure in 1981. The 1986 Registry Nomination form lists the then-owner as Fred Price. [4]
In 2009, through the efforts of Tioga Historical Society, the building opened as part of the Louisiana Museum System. [5] Exhibits focused on early life in Tioga, timber business, railroad line, and the Louisiana Maneuvers that trained soldiers for combat during World War II. [6] An undated “news” page announced the Museum's closure due to unstable conditions of building and lack of funding from the State for repair. The Marine Mill, established in 1839, was the first commercial sawmill in what became the U.S. state of Minnesota. Now in ruins, it is currently a historic site managed by the city of Marine on St. Croix in partnership with the Minnesota Historical Society. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Marine Mill Site in 1970 for having state-level significance in the themes of exploration/settlement, industry, and transportation. It was nominated for being the birthplace of the region's seminal industry—lumbering—and a major landing on its crucial transportation route, the St. Croix River. The site is also a contributing property to the Marine on St. Croix Historic District.
Roy is an unincorporated community located approximately two miles south of Castor in Bienville Parish in northern Louisiana, United States. To the south of Roy is Ashland in Natchitoches Parish. Named for Roy Otis Martin, Sr. (1890-1973), the community was the location of a closed sawmill owned and operated by the Martin Timber Company based in Alexandria, Louisiana, and operated by Martin's son, Roy O. Martin, Jr., and then his grandson, Roy O. Martin, III until sold to Hunt Plywood in 1992.
Shreveport Municipal Memorial Auditorium is a historic performance and meeting venue at 705 Elvis Presley Boulevard in Shreveport, Louisiana. It is an Art Deco building constructed between 1926 and 1929 during the administration of Mayor Lee Emmett Thomas as a memorial to the servicemen of World War I. In 1991, the auditorium was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and on October 6, 2008, it was designated a National Historic Landmark.
Fullerton is an unincorporated community in Vernon Parish, Louisiana, United States. Fullerton was once an industrial community (1907-1927), having developed around a large lumber mill. In 1986, the community and mill were added to the National Register of Historic Places as Fullerton Mill and Town because of their role in industry and in the development of housing for the mill workers.

Soulé Steam Feed Works is a historic business founded in Meridian, Mississippi in 1892 and incorporated in 1893 by George Soulé. The complex was listed as a contributing property to Union Station Historic District, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 under the Meridian Multiple Resource Area (MRA). It was listed as a Mississippi Landmark in 2003. The business, known for its many patented innovations in steam engine technology, reached its height around the turn of the 20th century, producing products that were sold around the world.
The Startup Candy Company is the oldest candy company in Utah and one of the oldest candy companies in the United States. William Startup started making candy in his basement in Manchester, England in 1820. He developed the first hard candy and called it “American Cough Candy” because he hoped to bring his new recipe to America one day. However, William died before making it to America, but he left his legacy to his son and namesake. William Startup Jr. learned the candy-making process as a young boy and continued to run his father’s candy business.
Causeyville, Mississippi is a small community in southeastern Lauderdale County, Mississippi, about twelve miles southeast of the city of Meridian. The Causeyville Historic District consists of four buildings at the center of the community–two general stores and two residences–that exemplify the pivotal contribution that small communities like Causeyville made to the development of Lauderdale County. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

The Skyline Commissary is a historic building in Skyline, Alabama. It was built in 1935 as part of Skyline Farms, a project of the Resettlement Administration, a New Deal program that sought to provide jobs for unemployed farmers on collective farms. The commissary sold food to both co-op members and surrounding residents, and served as the hub of social activity for the community. The co-op operated until the end of World War II, when it was sold to private owners. The commissary continued to operate as a general store for the community until the early 2000s. It was converted into a heritage museum in 2005. Like other New Deal structures, the commissary makes heavy use of local materials. The walls are of locally quarried limestone, and the façade features a pedimented portico covering double entry doors. The entry is flanked by two large, multi-paned fixed windows. A gable-roofed ell was added to the north of the rear side in 1937. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
The Three States Lumber Company Mill Powerhouse, also known as the Burdette Plantation Company Store, is a historic industrial site on Old Mill Road in Burdette, Arkansas. The only surviving element of what was once a much larger sawmill, the powerhouse is a two-part structure built in 1909 to provide electrical power to the Three States Lumber Company. The northern part of the building is a two-story brick structure with a gable roof, while the southern part is a single-story shed-roof concrete structure, which includes the remnants of a smokestack. The Three States Lumber Company ran a large sawmill on this site between 1906 and 1922, removing most of the structures when its operations shut down. The property was converted into a plantation when the company moved out, and this building became the company store.
The Morse & Co. Office Building is a historic commercial building at 455 Harlow Street in Bangor, Maine. Built in 1895, it was the headquarters for Morse & Company, one of the city's largest employers for nearly 100 years, and the last operator of a lumber mill in the city. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
The Good Pine Lumber Company Building, at 1606 Front St. in the center of the rural community of Jena, Louisiana, was built in 1906 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
The Missouri Lumber and Mining Company (MLM) was a large timber corporation with headquarters and primary operations in southeast Missouri. The company was formed by Pennsylvania lumbermen who were eager to exploit the untapped timber resources of the Missouri Ozarks to supply lumber, primarily used in construction, to meet the demand of U.S. westward expansion. Its primary operations were centered in Grandin, a company town it built starting c. 1888. The lumber mill there grew to be the largest in the country at the turn of the century and Grandin's population peaked around 2,500 to 3,000. As the timber resources were exhausted, the company had to abandon Grandin around 1910. It continued timber harvesting in other parts of Missouri for another decade. While some of the buildings in Grandin were relocated, many of the remaining buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 as part of the state's historic preservation plan which considered the MLM a significant technological and economic contributor to Missouri.
