Tirpitz Museum (Danish : Tirpitz Museet), also called Blåvand Bunker Museum, [2] is a museum in Blåvand, on the coast of Jutland. It is built in an old bunker from which it got its name, and features exhibitions on the Atlantic Wall, the west coast of Denmark, and an amber collection.
The Tirpitz Bunker started construction in 1944, and was built as part of the defense around the city of Esbjerg. Following the surrender of the German forces, construction was halted, and the bunker was therefore never completed. [3] The bunker was designed to house 2 turrets with 2 38 cm SK C/34 naval guns each. [1] After the war, the bunker was abandoned and later turned into a small museum. [4]
In 2012, it was decided to expand and completely redesign the museum, with Bjarke Ingels Group being chosen as architect of the new museum. [2] [5] The new museum features open spaces and is built into the dunes. [1] [6] The permanent exhibitions were designed by Dutch experience design agency Tinker Imagineers. [7]
On 29 June 2017, an opening ceremony was held, with the Crown Prince and Minister of Culture attending. [8]
The Museum features 4 exhibition areas, 3 of which are permanent exhibitions. [1] Furthermore, it is possible to enter the old bunker and gun turret with a glass reconstruction of the artillery guns. [2]
Tells about Atlantic Wall and personal stories from the surrounding areas. [9]
Tells the story of the 20,000 year old history of the Danish West Coast. [10]
Features the largest collection of amber in Denmark. [3]
The first non-permanent exhibition, is centered around mine clearance, and features props and sets from the movie Land of Mine. [11]
The Imperial German Navy or the Kaiserliche Marine was the navy of the German Empire, which existed between 1871 and 1919. It grew out of the small Prussian Navy, which was mainly for coast defence. Kaiser Wilhelm II greatly expanded the navy. The key leader was Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz, who greatly expanded the size and quality of the navy, while adopting the sea power theories of American strategist Alfred Thayer Mahan. The result was a naval arms race with Britain, as the German navy grew to become one of the greatest maritime forces in the world, second only to the Royal Navy.

The Royal Danish Army is the land-based branch of the Danish Armed Forces, together with the Danish Home Guard. For the last decade, the Royal Danish Army has undergone a massive transformation of structures, equipment and training methods, abandoning its traditional role of anti-invasion defence, and instead focusing on out of area operations by, among other initiatives, reducing the size of the conscripted and reserve components and increasing the active component, changing from 60% support structure and 40% operational capability, to 60% combat operational capability and 40% support structure. When fully implemented, the Danish army will be capable of deploying 1,500 troops permanently on three different continents continuously, or 5,000 troops for a shorter period of time, in international operations without any need for extraordinary measures such as parliamentary approval of a war funding bill.

The architecture of Denmark has its origins in the Viking Age, revealed by archaeological finds. It was established in the Middle Ages when first Romanesque, then Gothic churches and cathedrals, were built throughout the country. During this period, brick became the construction material of choice for churches, fortifications and castles, as the country had little access to stone.

The Bismarck class was a pair of fast battleships built for Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine shortly before the outbreak of World War II. The ships were the largest and most powerful warships built for the Kriegsmarine; displacing more than 41,000 metric tons normally, they were armed with a battery of eight 38 cm (15 in) guns and were capable of a top speed of 30 knots. Bismarck was laid down in July 1936 and completed in September 1940, while the keel of her sister ship, Tirpitz, was laid in October 1936 and work finished in February 1941. The ships were ordered in response to the French Richelieu-class battleships, themselves laid down in response to the Italian Littorio-class battleships. The Bismarck-class was designed with the traditional role of engaging enemy battleships in home waters in mind, though the Oberkommando der Marine envisioned employing the ships as long-range commerce raiders against British shipping in the Atlantic Ocean. As such, their design represented the strategic confusion that dominated German naval construction in the 1930s.
