Tito Alberti (January 12, 1923 – March 25, 2009) was an Argentine jazz drummer.
Tito Alberti was born Juan Alberto Ficicchia in the port city of Zárate to an Argentine mother and a Sicilian father in 1923. Enjoying a gregarious childhood, he formed a band at age 7 with two brothers, Virgilio and Homero Expósito. The Expósitos, proprietors of a popular local café, encouraged the youthful trio to perform regularly at the establishment: Virgilio was the pianist, Homero played the ukulele, and Tito (as he was known by then) played battery and drums; among the audience one evening in 1930 was legendary tango crooner Carlos Gardel.
Tito was later a company drummer for the local Boy Scouts and, in his teens, enrolled at the Fracasi Conservatory, where he received formal training from Tony Carvajales, a well-known jazz drummer at the time. This experience was cut short, however, by his father's death in 1940, following which he was forced to find employment at Zárate's important Smithfield Foods abattoir. The relatively well-paid job allowed Tito to purchase his first professional drum kit and, in 1942, he was invited by producer Miguel Caló to record Azabache - a milonga written by his friend, Homero Expósito. The album's success brought him to the attention of Buenos Aires big band leader Raúl Marengo and in 1944 of Mexican songwriter Agustín Lara (internationally known by then for his pop standard "Granada").
His many appearances in Argentine radio led to a pseudonym, "Tito Alberti" and to a close friendship with a moderately successful matinée star, Eva Duarte. Her subsequent relationship with the populist Labor Minister, Juan Perón, helped lead to Argentina's Peronist movement (the country's central political development since 1945), among whose first adherents was the increasingly well-known drummer. He continued to receive lucrative contracts: he played for popular local swing orchestra, Ahmed Ratip's "Cotton Pickers," and for Mexican folklore standard Jorge Negrete. Alberti formed Reveríe, his first orchestra, in 1947, and performed at the Argentine Automobile Club's large auditorium. Reveríe became known for Alberti's whimsical, El elefante trompita ("Trunky the Elephant"), and the 1947 children's ditty became among the best-selling Spanish-language compositions in history. [1]
This success earned him a recording contract with Phillips and regular guest appearances with Cuban mambo band leaders Xavier Cugat and Dámaso Pérez Prado, beginning in 1949. Maintaining a busy schedule in and outside Argentina, he created the "Jazz Casino" orchestra with José Finkel, in 1950, and on May 1 of that year, Jazz Casino was commissioned by President Perón to lead International Labor Day festivities. Jazz Casino performed with guest pianist Hugo La Rocca for Argentine television's first broadcast, in 1951, and they continued to lead official May Day festivities until Perón's 1955 overthrow. [1]
Jazz Casino toured throughout Latin America until 1957, becoming well known for their fusion of Caribbean steel drum sounds with Latin jazz, a combination Alberti referred to as Dengue. The group disbanded, however, after which Alberti joined Cuban poet Nicolás Guillén in a touring literary and musical show called Tambores Cubanos ("Cuban Drums"), during 1958. Returning to Argentina that year, his Tito Alberti Orchestra became a fixture in Argentine entertainment and remained, until 1970, the top-grossing Argentine musical ensemble in its genre. They performed in fifty shows a month during that time, including most major local carnivals and a performance of Hasidic music for Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir. Their hectic schedule and his increasing use of narcotics proved too much of a strain for Alberti, however, who retired for health reasons. The 1981 collapse of the numerous unregulated brokerage houses that opened in Argentina during Economy Minister José Alfredo Martínez de Hoz's free-wheeling tenure cost the musician his fortune, including a yacht and his collection of four roadsters. The 76-year-old Alberti returned unexpectedly to the stage in 1998, when he joined a Chicago jazz sextet in a successful revival. [1] This fleeting return was followed by one in Zárate's Teatro Coliseo, in 2005. Weakened by a kidney ailment, Tito Alberti died on March 25, 2009, at age 86. Named an Illustrious Citizen of the Province of Buenos Aires in 1999, he was survived by his wife Martha and two sons, both of whom are musicians (Charly Alberti was, for a number of years, the drummer for Argentine rock group Soda Stereo). The music of Argentina includes a variety of traditional, classical and popular genres. One of the country's most significant cultural contributions is the tango, which originated in Buenos Aires and its surroundings during the end of the 19th century and underwent profound changes throughout the 20th century. Folk music was particularly popular during the 20th century, experiencing a "boom" in popularity during the 1950s and 1960s thanks to artists such as Atahualpa Yupanqui and Mercedes Sosa, prominent figures of the Nuevo cancionero movement. In the mid-to-late 1960s, the countercultural scene of Buenos Aires originated Argentine rock, considered the earliest incarnation of Spanish-language rock for having an autochthonous identity that differed from that of England or the United States. It was widely embraced by the youth and since then has become part of the country's musical identity as much as traditional music. According to the Harvard Dictionary of Music, Argentina also "has one of the richest art music traditions and perhaps the most active contemporary musical life.
Héctor José Cámpora was an Argentine politician. A major figure of left-wing Peronism, Cámpora briefly was Argentine president from 25 May to 13 July 1973 and subsequently arranged for Perón to run for president in an election that he subsequently won. The modern left-wing Peronist political youth organization La Cámpora is named after him. He was a dentist by trade.
Candombe is a style of music and dance that originated in Uruguay among the descendants of liberated African slaves. In 2009, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscribed candombe in its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Osvaldo Pedro Pugliese was an Argentine tango musician. He developed dramatic arrangements that retained strong elements of the walking beat of salon tango but also heralded the development of concert-style tango music. Some of his music, mostly since the 1950s, is used for theatrical dance performances. In Buenos Aires, Pugliese is often played later in the evening when the dancers want to dance more slowly, impressionistically and intimately.
Aníbal Carmelo Troilo was an Argentine tango musician.
Ernesto Acher is an Argentine comedian, actor, composer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist and orchestral conductor. Between 1971 and 1986 he was a member of the celebrated Argentine group Les Luthiers, with which he acted as composer, comedian, singer, and performer on more than twenty instruments, some of which he created himself. Before separating from the group, he was involved in individual projects as composer – including a soundtrack, a quartet for clarinet and strings, a string sextet and a symphonic poem for viola and orchestra. In 1988 he founded the La Banda Elástica, gathering some of the most outstanding Argentine jazz musicians. The band dissolved in 1993. Since then he has developed several musical and comedy projects, and performed as an orchestral conductor.
Libertad Lamarque was a Mexican-Argentine actress and singer, one of the icons of the Golden Age of Argentine and Mexican cinema. She achieved fame throughout Latin America, and became known as "La Novia de América". By the time she died in 2000, she had appeared in 65 films and six soap operas, had recorded over 800 songs and had made innumerable theatrical appearances.
José Ber Gelbard, was a Polish-born Argentine activist and politician, and a member of the Argentine Communist Party. He also helped organize the Confederación General Económica (CGE), made up of small and medium-sized business. Beginning about 1954, he was appointed as an economic advisor to Juan Perón and repeatedly was called back to serve as Minister of Finance to successive governments until the military coup of March 1976. He fled with his family shortly before the coup, gaining political asylum in the United States and settling in Washington, D.C.
Carlos Alberto Ficicchia Gigliotti, known by his stage name Charly Alberti, is an Argentine rock musician, best known as the drummer of the influential Argentine rock band Soda Stereo. Because of this, he is considered one of the most important musicians of latin and Spanish rock. He is the oldest son of Dolly Gigliotti and Argentine jazz drummer Tito Alberti.
Héctor Juan Pedro Bosio Bertolotti better known by his stage name Zeta Bosio, is an Argentine rock musician, record producer and disc jockey (DJ), better known as the bassist of the Argentine rock band Soda Stereo. He was also the bassist of Chilean band La Ley between 2013 and 2014. Nowadays he plays in the band Shoot the Radio, which he co-founded.
Juan Carlos Mareco was a Uruguayan actor and radio and television talk show host. He achieved fame in Spain, Chile and Argentina from the 1960s onwards in comedy roles and as a television host in a variety of genres.
Oscar Aníbal Crudeli, better known as Roberto Achával, was an Argentine tango violinist. He became well-known and popular in Argentina following his appearance on the Argentinian television show "Grandes Valores del Tango". He was a member of Aníbal Troilo's orchestra.
Homero Aldo Expósito was an Argentine poet and tango songwriter. He used to compose with his brother Virgilio Expósito, who was responsible for the music.

Miguel Ángel Girollet (1947–1996) was an Argentinian classical guitar player whose repertoire included music from the 16th century to the contemporary era. In the 1970s, he formed part of the renowned Martínez Zárate String Quartet. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1947, and died in Madrid, Spain, in 1996.
German Cornejo & Gisela Galeassi are an Argentinian tango dance duo. They have been dancing together since early 2011, currently dancing for German Cornejo's Dance Company (GCDC), performing as lead dancers for the company. , Gisela and German won the title of World Tango Champions in 2003 and 2005, respectively, at the Campeonato Mundial de Baile de Tango . Both German & Gisela have appeared in numerous TV shows, Films and have toured extensively throughout the world. They have been judges in regional tango championships in Chile, Spain, Italy, Colombia and Japan. The duo is mostly known to Anglo-speaking audiences for their appearance in the American reality television show ¡Q'Viva!: The Chosen. and recently in America's Got Talent. They were winning finalists in Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony's TV show Q Viva culminating in the Las Vegas stage show of the same name in May 2012, at the Mandalay Bay Arena. In June 2012 they were JLO's special guest artists at her first-ever concert in Buenos Aires.
Nilda Elvira Vattuone, better known by her stage name Nelly Omar, was an Argentine actress and singer during the Golden Age of Argentine Cinema. She was successful as a tango singer, performing on numerous radio shows and performed canción criolla. Her film career began in 1940. She was blacklisted after the ouster of Juan Perón for having sung his anthem, Soy La Descamisada and did not work again until the 1970s. From her comeback in 1972, she remained an active performer until her death.
