Toivo Kostia Salonen (21 May 1933 – 28 October 2019) [1] was a former speed skater from Finland. He was born in Pälkäne.
Toivo Salonen had most of his successes on a national level, becoming Finnish Allround Champion in 1954, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1961, winning Finnish silver in 1953, 1955, and 1962, and taking bronze in 1963 and 1964. But Salonen also competed internationally for 12 years and participated in 4 Winter Olympics. At the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, he won bronze on the 1,500 m. [2] So far (including the 2006 Winter Olympics), Salonen is the last Finnish male speed skater to have won an Olympic medal – the last Finnish female speed skater so far being Kaija Mustonen in 1968. In 1959, Salonen won bronze at the European Allround Championships behind gold medallist Knut Johannesen and fellow countryman Juhani Järvinen, who won silver. Two weeks later at the World Allround Championships, Salonen won silver behind Järvinen.
Sven Tomas Gustafson is a retired Swedish speed skater, and one of the most successful distance skaters of the 1980s.
Arnold Clas ("Classe") Robert Thunberg was a Finnish speed skater who won five Olympic gold medals – three at the inaugural Winter Olympics held in Chamonix in 1924 and two at the 1928 Winter Olympics held in St. Moritz. He was the most successful athlete at both of these Winter Olympics, sharing the honour for 1928 Winter Olympics with Johan Grøttumsbraaten of Norway. No other athlete ever won such a high fraction of all Olympic events at a single Games. He was born and died in Helsinki.
Irene Karlijn (Ireen) Wüst is a Dutch former long track speed skater of German ancestry. Wüst became the most successful speed skating Olympian ever by achieving at least one gold medal in each of five consecutive Winter Olympic appearances. Wüst is also the only athlete to win an individual gold medal in five consecutive Olympics, Summer or Winter.

Julius Ferninand Skutnabb was a Finnish speed skater. A fireman by profession, he made his international debut at the World Allround Championships in 1914, but his international career was interrupted by World War I. He kept competing nationally, becoming the Finnish Allround Champion in 1914, 1916, and 1917. International activity resumed in 1922 and Skutnabb, already 32 years old, finished fifth at the World Allround Championships that year. After placing sixth at the world championships the following year, his best year came in 1924.

Jouko Juhani Järvinen was a Finnish speed skater. He competed in the 1956, 1960 and 1964 Olympics with the best result of fourth place over 1500 m in 1956 and fifth in 1960. In 1959 he won a world title, placing second at the European championships. The same year he set a world record over 1500 m (2:06.3) and was elected Finnish Sportspersonality of the year. His world record stood for seven years.
The 1500 metres speed skating event was part of the speed skating at the 1956 Winter Olympics programme. The competition was held on naturally frozen ice on the Lake Misurina. It was held on Monday, 30 January 1956, started at 2 PM and ended at 4:05 PM. Fifty-four speed skaters from 18 nations competed.
Karolína Erbanová is a Czech ice hockey player and retired long-track speed skater. She won a bronze medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in the 500 m event in speed skating.
