Tom Martinez was an American football coach. He coached at the College of San Mateo until 2005, when he retired due to health concerns. He coached at the College of San Mateo after Bill Walsh and John Madden. The College of San Mateo Football program traditionally has a very high ranking team and draws players from all over the country. NFL alumni John Madden, of the Oakland Raiders and Bill Walsh, of the San Francisco 49ers both played and coached at the College of San Mateo early in their careers. Bill Walsh was claimed to be the best NFL coach ever and later retired from the 49ers to become the athletic director at Stanford University.. Prior to Martinez' death, he was inducted into the College of San Mateo Sports Hall of Fame. Many of his former College of San Mateo Football Players remember him as taking the approach of a military drill sergeant type to coaching at the college level. Martinez had a passion for conducted private coaching sessions with quarterbacks of all ages and from all around the country.

Pedro Jaime Martínez is a Dominican retired baseball player. He was a starting pitcher for five teams in Major League Baseball from 1992 to 2009, most notably the Boston Red Sox from 1998 to 2004. From 2002 to 2006 he held the major league record for the highest career winning percentage by a pitcher with at least 200 decisions; with a final record of 219 wins and 100 losses, he retired with the fourth-highest percentage in history, and the highest by a right-hander since the modern pitching era began in 1893. He ended his career with an earned run average (ERA) of 2.93, the sixth-lowest by a pitcher with at least 2,500 innings pitched since 1920. Martínez reached the 3,000 strikeout mark in fewer innings than any pitcher except Randy Johnson, and is the only pitcher to compile over 3,000 strikeouts with fewer than 3,000 innings pitched; his career strikeout rate of 10.04 per 9 innings trails only Johnson (10.61) among pitchers with over 1,500 innings.

A native of Granada, Nicaragua, Martínez became the first pitcher born outside of the United States to pitch a perfect game. The perfect game also made the Dodgers, the losing team in Tom Browning's perfect game in 1988, the first team to be on the losing end of consecutive perfect games; they have since been joined by the Tampa Bay Rays, who were the losing team in Mark Buehrle's perfect game in 2009 and Dallas Braden's perfect game the following year. After completing the perfect game, Martínez slowly walked into the Dodger stadium dugout, sat down by himself and cried.
