Tongzhou District (simplified Chinese : 通 州 区 ; traditional Chinese : 通 州 區 ; pinyin : Tōng zhōu Qū ; Wade–Giles :T'ung1chou1 Ch'ü1, alternate spellings TungchowTungchou (T'ung-chou), or Tong County during 1914–1997) is a district of Beijing. It is located in southeast Beijing and considered the eastern gateway to the nation's capital. Downtown Tongzhou itself lies around 20 km (12 mi) east of central Beijing, at the northern end of the Grand Canal (on the junction between the Tonghui Canal and the Northern Canal) and at the easternmost end of Chang'an Avenue. The entire district covers an area of 906 km2 (350 sq mi), or 6% of Beijing's total area. It had a population of 673,952 at the 2000 Census, and has seen significant growth and development since then, growing to a population of 1,184,000 at the 2010 Census. The district is subdivided into four subdistricts, ten towns, and one ethnic township.
Tongzhou was founded in 195 BC during the Western Han Dynasty under the name of Lu (路) County, although there is evidence for human settlement in the Neolithic. At the start of the Eastern Han Dynasty the character Lu by which it was known was altered by the addition of a water radical to become Lu (潞). In 1151 under the Jin dynasty Lu County was renamed Tongzhou, roughly meaning 'the place for passing through', in recognition of its importance as the land and water approach to Beijing.
In July 1937, subsequent to the infamous Marco Polo Bridge Incident, Tongzhou became another site of determined Chinese resistance. In the Tongzhou Mutiny troops of the nominally Japanese-puppet East Hopei Army rebelled and came to the aid of hard-pressed Kuomintang troops, and attacked the Japanese garrison. In the fall of Tongzhou to the Nationalists, many civilians were murdered and abused as well as captured Japanese military personnel.
The place name changed to Tong County (simplified Chinese:通县; traditional Chinese:通縣; pinyin:Tōng Xiàn) when the area was placed under the new municipal region of Beijing in 1914. It again reverted to "Tongzhou" when the area was upgraded in 1997 to a district.
On 11 July 2015, Tongzhou became the second administrative seat of Beijing as a "sub-administrative center" for the municipality.Numerous local government departments will be moved to Tongzhou to reduce crowding within the city center of Beijing.
In 2017, the regional GDP of the district was 75.8 billion yuan,with GDP per capita at 50.3 thousand yuan.
Tongzhou District borders the Beijing districts of Shunyi, Chaoyang and Daxing, Wuqing District of Tianjin Municipality, and Langfang City (both the Sanhe City−Dachang County−Xianghe County exclave and Guangyang District) of Hebei province, and is 12 miles from Tiananmen Square and 10 miles from Beijing Capital International Airport.
Tongzhou is situated on the North China Plain with an average elevation of 20 meters (66 ft). Its climate belongs to the mild temperate zone, with distinct seasons including hot summers and freezing winters. Dust storms are common. It has an annual mean temperature of 11.3 °C (52.3 °F). and 620 mm (24 in) of rainfall. Several large rivers, among them the Wenyu, the Liangshui and Chaobai flow through the district.
Tongzhou District is divided into six subdistricts, ten towns, and one ethnic township. Two of the towns of which carry the "area" (地区) label.

Downtown Tongzhou is connected to downtown Beijing by Jingtong Expressway and Batong Line, Beijing Subway. Beijing's Fifth and Sixth Ring Road are roughly equidistant from Tongzhou's CBD. Highways lead to Shenyang, Harbin and Tianjin/Tanggu. A seventh ring road, a sixth subway line, a Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway and a Beijing-Tianjin shuttle are under construction.

There are seven industrial zones with a total area of 64 square kilometers (25 sq mi) in Tongzhou, focusing on manufacturing and high-tech industries. Downtown Tongzhou is earmarked for redevelopment into a comprehensive central business district with an emphasis on consumer retail. In agriculture, the district emphasizes on horticulture, fruit-farming, seed-growing and aquatics. The district government is currently promoting Tongzhou's position at the head of the Grand Canal to attract tourists to its Grand Canal Cultural Park. [ citation needed ]
The Songzhuang artists' village, where many Chinese contemporary artists live and work, is located in the Tongzhou District.
Canal Business District is under construction. Headquarters of Beijing branches of Central Government-owned Enterprises and Headquarters of Beijing Government-owned Enterprises will move to Tongzhou.Canal Business District plans to develop industrial clusters of headquarters economy and wealth management.

Tongzhou has good education facilities including 113 kindergartens, 141 primary schools, 51 high schools and many adult education colleges[ citation needed ]. It also boasts the Beijing Materials Institute, Beijing University of Technology and the Beijing Institute of Music. Its hospitals include a specialist tuberculosis treatment center and a hospital specializing in traditional Chinese medicine.

The Beijing Subway is the rapid transit system of Beijing Municipality that consists of 24 lines including 19 rapid transit lines, two airport rail links, one maglev line and 2 light rail lines, and 428 stations. The rail network extends 727 km (452 mi) across 12 urban and suburban districts of Beijing and into one district of Langfang in neighboring Hebei province. With 3.8484 billion trips delivered in 2018, an average of 10.544 million trips per day, the Beijing Subway is the world's busiest metro system. Single-day ridership set a record of 13.7538 million on July 12, 2019.
Chaoyang District is a core district of Beijing. It borders the districts of Shunyi to the northeast, Tongzhou to the east and southeast, Daxing to the south, Fengtai to the southwest, Dongcheng, Xicheng and Haidian to the west, and Changping to the northwest.
Line 1 of the Beijing Subway is the oldest and one of the busiest lines of Beijing's mass transit rail network. Line 1 runs underneath Chang'an Avenue, the city's grand east–west thoroughfare, right through the heart of Beijing with stops on either side of Tiananmen Square. Line 1's color is red. As the oldest line of the Beijing Subway, Line 1 was also the most heavily used from the time the subway opened in 1971 until January 2013, when the near-completion of the Line 10 loop caused ridership on that line to surge past Line 1. Recent traffic relief efforts have been completed in recent years. The opening of the first phase of the parallel Line 6, caused an 8.46% decrease in daily demand and a 10-20% reduction in peak flow during rush hour. In addition Beijing BRT line 2 parallels the eastern section of Line 1. However, during peak hours, sections of the line were reported in 2013 to still operate above 100% capacity.
The Batong Line of the Beijing Subway is an east–west rapid transit line in eastern Beijing. It extends Line 1 further east from Sihui in Chaoyang District to Huazhuang in Tongzhou District.
Changping District, formerly Changping County (昌平县), is a district situated in the suburbs of north and northwest Beijing.
Daxing District is a district of Beijing, covering the southern suburbs of the city. It borders the Beijing districts of Tongzhou to the east/northeast, Fangshan to the west, Fengtai to the northwest, and Chaoyang to the northeast, as well as Hebei province to the south.
Line 7 of the Beijing Subway is a rapid transit line in Beijing. It runs parallel and to the south of Line 1 and Batong line, from the Beijing West railway station in Fengtai District to Huazhuang in Tongzhou District. Like Line 6, Line 7 provides additional relief to the overcapacity Line 1 adding another east–west trunk line to the Beijing Subway network.
The Fangshan Line of the Beijing Subway is a rapid transit line in western Beijing that runs from Yancun Dong (E) in Fangshan District north and east to Dongguantou Nan (S) in Fengtai District. The line is 31.8 km (19.8 mi). It is mainly elevated, including 10 elevated stations and 6 underground stations. It allows residents of Beijing's western suburbs to connect to the rest of the Beijing Subway network. It was opened on December 30, 2010.
The Yizhuang Line of the Beijing Subway is a rapid transit line that connects the Yizhuang Development Area with Beijing's subway network. The line is 23.23 km (14.43 mi) long with 14 stations, including six underground and eight elevated. It runs from Songjiazhuang in Fengtai District to Yizhuang Railway Station in Tongzhou District and passes through the southern Chaoyang and northern Daxing Districts. Total investment for the line was estimated at ¥1.2 billion. Construction began on December 8, 2007 and the line opened on December 30, 2010.
Guaanzhuang station is a station on the Batong line of the Beijing Subway, and is located in the Guanzhuang area (管庄地区) of Chaoyang District.

All Beijing Subway trains run on 1,435mm standard gauge rail and draw power from the 750 V DC third rail, except those on Lines 6 and 14, which use 1,500 V DC overhead wires. Lines 6, 15, Fangshan, and Changping have a designed maximum service speed of 100 km/h (62 mph). The Airport Line is linear motor driven with a designed maximum service speed of 110 km/h (68 mph) All other Lines have a maximum service speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). Currently Lines 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 13, 15, Batong, Daxing, Changping, Fangshan, Yanfang, and Yizhuang use 6 car B size trains. Initially, Lines Batong and 13 was originally used 4 car trains and now expanded into six.
Line 17 of the Beijing Subway is a rapid transit line under construction in Beijing. The line is fully underground with a total length of 49.7 km (30.9 mi). The line is scheduled to open in parts in 2021 and 2022. It will be operated by Beijing MTR Corporation Limited.
Tongzhou Beiguan is a station on Line 6 of the Beijing Subway. The station opened on December 28, 2014.
Beiyunhe Xi (W) is a station on Line 6 of the Beijing Subway. The construction of this station began on September 20, 2012, and was completed in 2014. This station is located in Tongzhou District, Beijing on the western shore of the Grand Canal.
Beijing–Tangshan intercity railway is a high-speed railway connecting Beijing and Tangshan in eastern Hebei. Construction on the railway was originally scheduled to start in 2009 but the completion has been delayed after a nationwide rail review following the 2011 Wenzhou Rail Incident. Construction was eventually started on December 29, 2015. From Beijing Sub-Center railway station to Baodi South railway station, the Beijing–Binhai intercity railway will share its northern segment with the Beijing–Tangshan intercity railway before continuing southeast-ward to Binhai West railway station.
Line 22 of the Beijing Subway is a rapid transit line under planning in Beijing and Hebei Province.
Gaoloujin station is a subway station on Line 7 of the Beijing Subway, located in Gaoloujin Village, Liyuan Town in Tongzhou District. It has a double island platform. Most trains head for Hua Zhuang, but some trains terminate here.
Huazhuang station is a subway station on Line 7 and Batong Line of the Beijing Subway. It is located in Huazhuang Village in Liyuan Town in Tongzhou District. It has a double-island platform. It is operated by Beijing Mass Transit Railway Operation Corporation Limited.
Universal Resort station is an unopened subway station on Line 7 and Batong line of the Beijing Subway. It is located near the entrance of Universal Beijing Resort. The station is scheduled to open in May 2021.
