Torrejon High School

Torrejon High School was an U.S. United States Department of Defense (DOD) school located on Torrejon Air Force Base in Torrejón de Ardoz, Spain, outside of Madrid. [1] The school's predecessor was the Madrid High School which started in mid-1950s. In September 1959, Torrejon High School opened in a converted barracks at Torrejon Air Base. Several years after this, the high school continued to be known as “Madrid High School until 1971 when the name was officially changed to “Torrejon High School". [2]

In the early 1990s, the U.S. presence on Torrejon Air Force Base began to be phased out. After this, Torrejon High School graduated its last class in June 1992, and the school closed. [3]

On 12 April 1985, the El Descanso restaurant in Madrid, Spain was bombed in a terrorist attack. The explosion caused the three-story building to collapse, crashing down on about 200 diners and employees, killing 18 people, all Spanish citizens, and injuring 82 others, including eleven Americans working at the nearby Torrejón Air Base who frequented the restaurant. At the time it was the deadliest attack in Spain since the Spanish Civil War.

In late November and early December 2022, a number of letter bombs were mailed to locations across Spain. Packages were received at high-profile individuals and locations, including the Prime Minister of Spain's Moncloa residence, the Ukrainian and U.S. embassies in Madrid, Torrejon Air Base, and the arms manufacturer Instalaza. One person was injured in the attacks—a security officer at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid.
