A netlabel is a record label that distributes its music through digital audio formats over the Internet. While similar to traditional record labels in many respects, netlabels typically emphasize free distribution online, often under licenses that encourage works to be shared, and artists often retain copyright.
Speedcore is a form of hardcore that is characterized by a high tempo and aggressive themes. The genre was created in the early to mid 1990s and the name originates from the genre hardcore as well as the high speed tempo used. This music rarely drops below 300 beats per minute (bpm). Earlier speedcore tracks often averaged at about 250 bpm, which could be defined as terror(core), whereas some tracks sometimes exceed 1000 bpm where it then becomes known as extratone, the world's fastest music genre.

The magazine initially focused on publishing interviews, portraits and reviews about artists who release their music licensed under creative commons and several forms of netculture. Since its birth in 2000 Phlow evolved and initiated the Netlabel Catalogue, a directory of netlabels, and started an international version in English in September 2007, called Phlow-Magazine.com. Together with Christian Negre Moritz "mo." Sauer started Phlow.es, a Spanish version of Phlow.
"Paradise & Dreams" is a song written and recorded by producers Force & Styles featuring Junior which was originally appeared on their album All over the UK (1996) and was released as a single in 1997. Both members of Force & Styles would later record cover versions of the song at later dates, the first was by The Force in 2003 and another was by Ultrabeat versus Darren Styles which appeared on both artists début albums Ultrabeat: The Album (2007) and Skydivin' (2008).

The song combines the hardcore and commercial styles of the two artists. It was released on 23 June 2008 as a digital download; a physical single was released on 28 July 2008.

Herd is the musical alias of Jason Thomson from Corby, Northamptonshire. The Herd sound is inspired by the electronic band The Future Sound of London, especially their 1994 ambient masterpiece Lifeforms. Initially, Herd created music using Sony ACID and showcased these tracks on the private bit.torrent site TheMixingBowl.org. After receiving positive feedback from members of the site he submitted some tracks to the American netlabel Future State of Rhythm (FSOR). This release Tangents 1 - 19 was the start of the Tangents project which currently sits at over 47 tracks. Nationwide radio exposure followed this release with support from Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC Radio One as well as a 35-minute mix on an up-and-coming new electronic music podcast entitled Electronic Explorations hosted by Rob Booth. Further netlabel releases followed with the Tangents ep on the Japanese netlabel Bumpfoot as well as Tangents 32 - 39 on the entity netlabel based in Belgium. This was followed by the release of Tangents 41 - 47 released in 2011 on The Future Sound of London's online label FSOLdigital.com.
Cousin Silas is the stage name of English electronic music artist David Hughes. The name comes from a character in King Crimson's song, "Happy Family". He has released over eighty albums on various netlabels. Between 1990 and 2000 he wrote several short stories, poetry, prose, and articles that were published in small press magazines such as Back Brain Recluse, Nova SF, The Scanner, REM, Nerve Gardens, The Lyre, Auguries and Focus. On 28 January 2004 Cousin Silas made an appearance on BBC Radio 1 played by John Peel.

Since the mid-2000s, a counterculture has taken place where numerous netlabels, online labels that release their music for free, located in Japan have been formed and garnered a huge amount of publicity which, according to writer Patrick St. Michel, has shaped how popular Japanese music is produced. Japan's netlabel phenomenon was the first time in the history of the nation's music industry where underground musicians could produce their works however they wanted to and have their music noticed by the public; this is an aspect that was previously absent at a time when major labels in the country followed a conservative method where they managed how artists would produce their music. Starting in the 2010s, the netlabel scene has crossed over to the mainstream music landscape and all across the world, with netlabel producers transitioning into working for bigger labels and western producers like Cashmere Cat and Ryan Hemsworth being influenced by the music of Japanese netlabels.
