The University of Botswana School of Medicine (UBSOM), also known as the University of Botswana Medical School, is the school of medicine of the University of Botswana, Botswana's oldest and largest public university. The medical school was established in 2009. [2] The school provides medical education at undergraduate, and postgraduate levels. [3]

Location

The school is located on the main campus of the University of Botswana, in the central business district of Gaborone, the largest city and capital of Botswana. [2] The coordinates of the campus of the University of Botswana Medical School are: 24°39'52.0"S, 25°55'49.0"E (Latitude:-24.664444; Longitude:25.930278). [4] The current medical school campus was established in 2012. [3]

Teaching hospital

The medical school maintains a teaching hospital, approximately 1.5 kilometres (1 mi), by road, north-east of the main campus. [5] The 450-bed state-of-the-art hospital was established in 2014. [3]

Partnerships

The University of Botswana has maintained a partnership with the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the Botswana Ministry of Health & Wellness since 2001. The partnership is focused on research, clinical care, and training around HIV/AIDS. It employs 120 full-time staff. [6]

A postgraduate degree of Master of Medicine (MMed) is awarded following three or more years of instruction and examination in any of the following specialties: [3]

Pioneer class

The pioneer class of undergraduates, numbering 36, were admitted in 2009 and graduated in 2014. As of May 2014, the school had a total population of 87 academics and 301 medical students, of whom 230 were undergraduates and 71 were postgraduates. At that time, the areas of postgraduate study included (a) Public Health (b) Internal Medicine (c) Family Medicine and (d) Pediatrics and Adolescent Health. [1]

Uganda Martyrs University Private university in Uganda

Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) is a private university affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church in Uganda. It is licensed by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education. UMU consists of seven faculties, one institute, four centers, five departments, and two schools. As of January 2015, total student enrollment exceeded 5,000. Of these, about 1,500 students were residential, while nearly 3,000 students were enrolled in UMU's distance learning programs. The number of staff members was over 400.

The degree is awarded by both surgical and medical subspecialties and usually includes a dissertation component involving original research. Makerere University College of Health Sciences

Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS) is a constituent college of Makerere University, Uganda's oldest university. Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine

The Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong is a medical faculty which comprises several schools and departments that provide an array of tertiary programmes in medicine, nursing, pharmacy and chinese medicine. English is the medium of instruction in all of the classes while Chinese is also retained for the teaching of chinese medicine. It is located several kilometres away from the main campus of the university and is near the Queen Mary Hospital which is its main teaching facility and research base. The medical school is one of the newer medical schools in the country, having been part of university since 2013. The school provides medical education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The University of Ghana Medical School also UGMS is the medical school of Ghana's first public research institution, the University of Ghana. It is currently located at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. The medical school was first planned in 1919, but took its first students in 1962.

Habib Medical School (HMS) is the school of medicine of the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), one of Uganda's private universities. The school is the newest medical school in the country, having been part of IUIU since 2014. The school provides medical education at diploma and undergraduate levels.

Micheal Chilufya Copperbelt University School of Medicine (MCSCBUSOM), also known as Copperbelt University Medical School is the school of medicine of Copperbelt University in Zambia. The medical school is the country's second public medical school, the other being the University of Zambia School of Medicine.
