The Pechora is the sixth-longest river in Europe. Flowing from Northwest Russia and into the Arctic Ocean, it lies mostly in the Komi Republic but the northernmost part crosses the Nenets Autonomous Okrug.

The Pizhma is a river in the Komi Republic in Russia, an arm of the Pechora. The river is 283 kilometres (176 mi) long and has a drainage basin of 5,470 square kilometres (2,110 sq mi). The Pizhma flows southeast out of the Yamozero Lake, turns east and then north and joins the Pechora at Ust-Tsilma, where the Tsilma also joins the Pechora. The river freezes up in late October or early November and stays icebound until late April or early May. The Pizhma is navigable along its lower reaches.

The area of the district is 42,500 square kilometers (16,400 sq mi). Its administrative center is the rural locality of Ust-Tsilma. As of the 2010 Census, the total population of the district was 13,036, with the population of Ust-Tsilma accounting for 37.4% of that number.

The main tributaries are the Mutnaya (right), the Kosma (left), the Rudyanka (left), the Nonbur (right), the Myla (right), the Tobysh (left), and the Usa (right).

Aeroflot Flight 498 was a Soviet domestic passenger flight from Severomuysk to Ulan-Ude that crashed near Lake Baikal on 14 June 1981 en route to its planned stop at Nizhneangarsk Airport, Nizhneangarsk. All 44 passengers—including 13 children—and 4 crew members on board were killed, and the aircraft was destroyed. It remains the deadliest crash involving an Ilyushin Il-14.
