VH1 (referred as VH1 Europe) is a European music television channel owned by ViacomCBS Networks EMEAA. It played a wide variety of music programs on a daily or weekly basis, and various VH1 original series.

Contents

The channel focused on current music, as well as music from the 2000s and the 2010s. In the 2000s, the channel used to focus on then current music - with a heavier focus on so-called adult contemporary pop and pop rock than today -, as well as music from the 1990s and the 1980s. Since 2020, the channel also play some Hip Hop hits, from artists like Roddy Ricch and DaBaby.

On 2 August 2021, the channel will be replaced by MTV 00s. [1]

History

VH1 appeared for the first time in the UK and Germany in Spring 1995 and the version airing in the UK was subsequently distributed across the whole of Europe as VH1 Export from June 1999. However, its current pan-European feed was officially launched in 2001 by merging VH1 Export and VH1 Germany, hence becoming a separate service from the UK-aimed VH1 channel. [2]

VH1 Europe in 2013 was the only major music channel in Western Europe still broadcasting in the 4:3 ratio while others were broadcasting in 16:9. Since 28 May 2014, VH1 Europe is broadcasting in 16:9.

Programming

This European version of VH1 is very different from its American counterpart, since it has never ceased to be a proper music channel, playing a wide variety of music programs on a daily or weekly basis. VH1 Europe covers many styles of music through a comprehensive selection of music videos ranging from the 1970s to today, using MTV Networks Europe's London-based music video library.

VH1 Europe's regular programming contains songs from 1980 onwards, with some of the Top 50 segments showing rare songs from 70s and 60s. As of year 2021, the regular programming stopped adding new songs into the regular programming, with the most recent song included the British singer Harry Styles' single Treat People with Kindness (exclusive segments "Coldplay: The Hits" and "P!nk: The Hits" added Higher Power and Cover Me in Sunshine singles). In addition, the regular programming in the year focused on 00s era, by adding additional songs from that era, reintroducing songs that were shown in other segments, as well as adding new segments.

On Pan-European feed

Since 5 August 2010, most of the European feeds of VH1 are one common music channel which airs commercials. Starting this date, VH1 started to air the first commercial in some regions, thus following the trend of the regional resellers (cable companies) to air specific language and area commercials. The regional cover-up aspect of VH1 by this date has been less aggressive as it did not have commercial and shopping shows. The revenue came only from subscribers and since then the change in its politics means VH1 now allows third parties to overlap commercial clips with regional commercials. This increases the revenue by an additional percentage and it cannot increase the low audition percentage[ clarification needed ] it has on the TV market.

Themed shows

Until early 2008, VH1 Europe's schedule was largely based upon music programming, although some shows imported from VH1 US or MTV US (including classic episodes of Beavis & Butt-head , Pop-Up Video and The Osbournes ) could be seen during primetime hours as well. In February 2008, the station received a major makeover in its timeslot programming, with further specialist shows being added to the already existing ones, featuring selections of music videos linked by common themes (VH1 Themed, Smells Like The 90s, VH1 Pop Chart, Boogie Night, Flipside, Chill Out, So 80s, Viva La Disco, Sunday Soul, VH1 New, VH1 Rocks, Top 10, Final Countdown, Then & Now, VH1 Classic, Smooth Wake Up, Saturday Night Fever, Best Of Charts, Greatest Hits, Aerobic, Espresso, VH1 Oldschool, Cover Power...). In January 2010, the only daily hour of non-music related programming on VH1 Europe – formerly airing between noon and 1 p.m. – was replaced by music video-based programming. The channel's schedule now purely consists of music programming.

VH1 Jukebox

For 2 hours each day, between 18.00 and 20.00 CET, the channel played selections of videos submitted by viewers via the channel's website on a show called VH1 Jukebox. The show was cancelled in summer 2010.

Non-English music

Until "Despacito" acquired the status of a global mega-hit, VH1 Europe didn't regularly play music sung in another language than English, but since Spanish language música urbana became hugely popular outside of Latin America or the Latin American communities around the world in the late 2010s, the channel began to regularly play videos from artists like Luis Fonsi, J Balvin, Bad Bunny, Rosalía, Maluma, Anitta, as well Spanish songs by Shakira.

Availability

VH1 broadcasts from MTV Networks Europe's premises in Camden Town (London, UK) to Europe, except San Marino, and covering also the Middle East and Africa. On 1 June 2010, it became officially available in Russia as well, replacing the former local version VH1 Russia. On 1 October 2012, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina got their regional version of VH1 called VH1 Adria, which replaced the pan-European feed until 1 February 2015 at 6 AM CET, when it was replaced again by VH1 Europe. On 1 February 2017, programming of VH1 Poland were replaced with VH1 Europe's programming, then on 3 March 2020, VH1 Poland was replaced by VH1 Europe.

VH1 is available in almost every digital platform in the above-mentioned areas. VH1 covers countries from Europe, Middle East, Latin America and Africa. [3]

The HD version of VH1 Europe began broadcasting on 7 October 2020. This signal replaced VH1 HD in Brazil and Latin America.

The SD feed of VH1 Europe received in Latin America is similar to the channel's feed that is distributed in Russia and ex-Soviet republics (that means that the special programme idents are not aired), with the difference being not airing age ratings, in compliance with Russian television laws. Meanwhile, the channel's HD feed aired in Latin America airs the same content as the main channel in Europe.

Branding

On 7 October 2020 at 13:28 CET, VH1 Europe changed its on-screen graphics to graphics VH1 Italy has been using since 2018. The new slogan is "Sing It Loud".

Also, ever since the branding changed, the artist and song name info is now up for most of the duration of the song, instead of the beginning and the end only. This is much like the decade-based Now channels and Clubland TV (although these channels did also display these graphics in the larger font at the start and the end of the song).

MTV (European TV channel) Pan-European pay TV network

MTV is a pan-global pay television network launched on 1 August 1987. Initially, the channel served all regions within Europe being one of the very few channels that targeted the entire European continent. The channel serves a selection of European countries as ViacomCBS Networks EMEAA began to regionalise its network in 1997. However, since 2021, the channel has expanded outside of Europe.

MTV Rocks (British and Irish TV channel) 24-hour alternative music MTV network channel

MTV Rocks was a British pay television music channel that was operated by ViacomCBS Networks UK & Australia. Its programming consisted of 24-hour non-stop rock/alternative music.

ViacomCBS Networks Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia (EMEAA) is a division of ViacomCBS Networks International. Launched as MTV Networks Europe (MTVNE) in 1987, with two offices in London and Amsterdam. MTV2 Pop Defunct German television station

MTV2 Pop was a German music channel. It launched on 1 May 2001, taking over the transponder left by the analogue service of MTV UK and Ireland when it closed down. It replaced VH1 Germany. The channel mainly focused on Europop and eurodance music.

VH1 (Brazilian TV channel)

VH1 Brasil was a music channel from Viacom-owned Viacom International Media Networks The Americas. The network was launched in November 2005 on some cable systems, but it was not until May 2006 that it was launched on DirecTV Brazil, replacing MTV Latin America.

ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI) is the international division of ViacomCBS. The division oversees the production, broadcasting and promotion of key ViacomCBS' brands outside of the United States. These brands include Paramount Network, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, BET and Colors TV, as well as CBS-branded channels, which are co-owned with AMC Networks International. VCNI also owns a 30% stake in the Rainbow S.p.A. animation studio in Italy, as well as a 49% stake in an Indian joint venture called Viacom18.

MTV Live HD International 24-hour music channel

MTV Live HD is an international 24-hour clock HD live music pay television network that is operated by ViacomCBS Networks International's subsidiary ViacomCBS Networks EMEAA. The channel is available in Europe, Latin America, Oceania, Middle East and North Africa and Asia.

MTV (Czech TV channel)

MTV Czech Republic is a 24-hour music and entertainment television channel that served the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The channel was launched on 29 November 2009 under a licensing agreement between MTV Networks Europe, a subsidiary of MTV Networks, owned by the current Viacom from its split of the old Viacom in 2005 and CME, the owner of TV Nova.

VH1 (Polish TV channel)

VH1 Poland was a Polish pay television music channel from VIMN Polska. It was launched on December 1, 2005, replacing MTV Classic, another Polish MTV channel which used to broadcast mainly classic videos. VH1 Poland shows almost only music-based programs and plays a much broader range of videos than its predecessor. Many themed music programs were broadcast on a daily or weekly basis.

VH1 Classic (European TV channel) European music television channel

VH1 Classic Europe was a European music television channel from ViacomCBS Networks EMEAA. The channel primarily featured music videos from the 1980s through to the 2000s (decade), although rare live performances from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s could be seen as well.

MTV Music (British and Irish TV channel)

MTV Music is a British pay television channel operated by ViacomCBS Networks UK & Australia. The brand was first launched in the UK and Ireland before launching in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland. Unlike other MTV Music channels, This channel offers subtitles on selected programmes.

Comedy Central (Dutch TV channel)

Comedy Central is a Dutch free-to-air television channel based on the American channel of the same name. The channel is available on cable, digital terrestrial, IPTV, and satellite operators in the Netherlands. It broadcasts many imports as well as original programming. There is another, 24 hours a day broadcasting, Comedy Central channel available in the Netherlands, named Comedy Central Extra. This channel is only available as pay TV.

MTV Hits (Latin American TV channel)

MTV Hits Latin America was a 24-hour non-stop contemporary hit music channel from ViacomCBS Networks Americas that debuted in 2008. The format of the network resembles that of the classic MTV Latin America before the addition of other programming to that network in the 2000s and their slow decline of music video programming. The network had a schedule consisted of only videos, interrupted by promotional advertising for MTV Latin America and limited commercials on the network. Like the other digital MTV/VH1 channels, MTV Hits Latin America used to be based on an automated wheel schedule introduced in the first years of MTV2 in the US. This practice, though, has now been reduced, with five themed zones - namely MTV Hits Playlistism, Hitlist, Biggest! Hottest! Loudest!, MTV Classic and Weekend Playlist - being scheduled at predetermined timeslots.

VH1 HD

VH1 HD was a Brazilian television channel dedicated to music programming, owned by ViacomCBS Networks Americas. It was launched on 1 December 2009 and start broadcasting in the rest of Latin America on 2014.

Club MTV (British and Irish TV channel) British and Irish television channel

Club MTV was a 24-hour electronic dance music channel operated by ViacomCBS Networks UK & Australia launched on 20 April 2001. Available in the United Kingdom and Ireland on subscription satellite and digital television services. The channel played dance, EDM, trance, house, rave, club, Eurodance and sometimes urban music. The channel, along with MTV OMG and MTV Rocks closed on 20 July 2020, with a chart based on the channel's former content airing on MTV Base. "High on Life" by Martin Garrix featuring Bonn was the last music video played on the channel.

MTV 80s

MTV 80s is a worldwide music channel, which began broadcasting on October 5, 2020. As its name reflects, MTV 80s features music videos mainly from the 1980s.

MTV 90s Music television channel

MTV 90s is an international music television channel from ViacomCBS Networks International featuring music videos from the 1990s. MTV 90s replaced MTV Rocks in Europe, on 5 October 2020 at 05:00 CET. This channel is available in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and North Asia.
