Valkyrie Profile (ヴァルキリープロファイル, Varukirī Purofairu) or Valkyrie (ヴァルキリー, Varukirī) is a series of role-playing video games created by Masaki Norimoto and Yoshiharu Gotanda, primarily developed by tri-Ace and published by Square Enix (formerly Enix). The series is notable for featuring elements from Norse mythology.

The Valkyrie Profile series has been distinguished for its inventive gameplay. [1] Aesthetically, the series is known for its muted colors and melancholic ambiance. [1] As the player, one usually takes the role of a valkyrie, one of a host of female figures who choose warriors who may die in battle and lead them into the afterlife, though sometimes one plays as a mortal called upon by the divine beings. Music

The music of all the Valkyrie Profile games was composed by Motoi Sakuraba. [3] Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria has two original soundtracks, Alicia and Silmeria. Each soundtrack is divided into two discs totalling 70 songs from the game. Prior to the release, a special artifact box was released which included a copy of the game, ten musical tracks, a keychain, and a figurine. [4] The in-game score was written as MIDI tracks, allowing it to fit easily onto the DS cartridge. [5] Drawing from the darker themes of the narrative, Sakuraba created a subdued and emotional score that noticeably moved away from his score for Silmeria while still being separate from his work on Valkyrie Profile. The score included original composition and arranged versions of tracks from Sakuraba's scores for Valkyrie Profile. [6] The soundtrack conversion for the DS cartridge was done by sound design studio Noisycroak. [7] A two-disc soundtrack album was published by Square Enix's music label on November 5, 2008. [8] For the album release, Sakuraba used the MIDI originals as reference and redid all the tracks with full orchestration. While faithful to the original, the larger range of sounds resulted in some differences. [5] A twelve-track arrange album, handled by Sakuraba, was published alongside the main soundtrack album. [9] Producer Yoshinori Yamagishi mentioned his favorite way of drawing out emotion in players was through music and sound effects, helping to both immerse new players in the world of the game and play upon the nostalgia of series fans. [10] The game utilizes a mixture of music from the franchise and new compositions. [10]

Printed adaptations

Several manga have been written based on the series. They are Valkyrie Profile, Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, and Valkyrie Profile: The Dark Alchemist. A manga anthology called Valkyrie Profile Enix Supercomic Gekijoh is based on the PlayStation Portable version of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth.

Overall, the Valkyrie Profile series received positive critical reception both in Japan and the West. The series has shipped 2.2 million copies by 2016. [26]

Some Valkyrie Profile games have been included in various lists of top games. In a 2006 reader's poll conducted by Famitsu, the first Valkyrie Profile was voted the 27th best video game of all time. [27] Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth received IGN's award for Best PSP RPG of 2006. [28] Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria received IGN's award for "Best Game No One Played". [29]

The first game in the Star Ocean series, it was released only in Japan in July 1996, and was the first game developed by tri-Ace, consisting of staff that had previously left Wolf Team due to being unhappy with the development process for Tales of Phantasia with Namco in 1995. The game used a special compression chip in its cartridge to compress and store all of the game's data due to possessing graphics that pushed the limits of the Super Famicom. It is the second game in the Star Ocean series and the first game in the series to be released outside Japan, arriving in North America in June 1999 and Europe in April 2000, by Sony Computer Entertainment. Taking place in a science fantasy universe, the story centers around a young man named Claude C. Kenny, a cadet from a space-faring Earth organization who is stranded on an undeveloped, medieval-level planet. There, he meets several companions and must stop a plot from an evil organization that spans multiple worlds before finding his way home. The game was the basis of manga and anime adaptations.

Comic Valkyrie is a Japanese science fiction and fantasy seinen manga magazine published by Kill Time Communication. Its target readership is males between their teens and thirties. The first volume was released on July 25, 2006, and ran in bimonthly volumes until it switched to monthly publication, starting with Volume 30 on May 27, 2011. However, it switched back to bimonthly serialization following the release of Volume 34 on September 27, 2011. The final issue was published on September 27, 2012, before it switched to a free, online-only publication on its website with full volumes and chapters available on Nico Nico Douga's online book service, Nico Nico Seiga.

<i>Crossdressing Pandemic</i> Japanese manga series

Crossdressing Pandemic, known in Japan as Josou Pandemic, is a Japanese manga series by Mikuzu Shinagawa. Kill Time Communication serialized it in their web magazine Comic Valkyrie from August 13, 2019, to July 12, 2021, and collected it across two tankōbon volumes in 2020–2021. It follows Nanaki Koga, a young man who wakes up from a two-year coma to learn that cross-dressing has become very popular among men while he was unconscious, and that the students and teachers in his all-male school now dress like women.

<i>Tadokoro-san</i> Japanese manga series

Tadokoro-san (田所さん) is a Japanese yuri manga series written and illustrated by Tatsubon. It was posted online via Tatsubon's Pixiv account from November 2018 to February 2022 and has been licensed for a digital release in English by Lilyka. It was later serialized in Kill Time Communication's Comic Valkyrie from August 2019 to December 2021, featuring new art and storylines from the original web version. Tadokoro-san is about the relationship between a shy girl who likes to draw and a popular girl in her class.
