Veerappan is a 1991 Indian Kannada-language biographical docudrama film written and directed by Ravindranath. The film is based on the real-life Indian bandit Veerappan and the events of his early life till the 1990s.The film stars Devaraj as Veerappan and Lokesh as his Master.

Plot

Topical film referring, in part, to notorious real life sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, operating on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border, who hit the news following a series of violent encounters with the police in the early 90s.Like crime journalism dramatising the confrontations between the good and bad while retaining a veneer of support for the legal system, the film is formally dedicated to the police who lost their lives in their efforts to capture Veerappan.

Koose Munisamy Veerappan Gounder (18 January 1952 – 18 October 2004), more commonly known as Veerappan, was an Indian criminal, dacoit who was active for 36 years kidnapping major politicians for the sake of money, He was charged with sandalwood smuggling in the scrub lands and forests in the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. His long career and ability to evade police led him to be regarded as a Robin Hood figure to many.

Karnataka is a state in the south western region of India. It was formed on 1 November 1956, with the passage of the States Reorganisation Act. Originally known as the State of Mysore, it was renamed Karnataka in 1973. The state corresponds to the Carnatic region. The capital and largest city is Bangalore.

However, it begins with a scene which Veerappan (Devaraj) discusses and gives his approval to the production.A priest then explains Veerappan's life as being a consequence of his impoverished childhood.This leads to the next character Nayakan (Lokesh), formerly Veerappan's employer, but now his enemy, who points to the latter's Robin Hood-type inclinations.Veerappan's revenge for the rape of his sister and his encounters with the police then follow.The Film ends with a pair of brave police officers setting out to get him, but he eludes them.

Devaraj is an Indian actor and theatre actor who works in South Indian film industries. He has largely featured in Kannada films performing various roles as a lead character, supporting character and villainous character. He has also featured in Telugu and Tamil films.

Lokesh was an Indian stage actor turned film actor, who appeared in Kannada feature films. His wife Girija Lokesh is a film actress and film director. His father was Subbaiah Naidu, who is credited to be first hero of Kannada silent movies.

Attahasa is a 2013 Kannada biopic film directed by A. M. R. Ramesh, based on the notorious forest brigand Veerappan. It was co-released in Tamil as Vana Yuddham. Kishore plays the role of Veerappan in the film, whilst featuring Arjun Sarja and Vijayalakshmi and Lakshmi Rai in the lead roles. After much delay in the theatrical release, the film was opened to screens on 14 February 2013 all across Southern states of India, to positive reviews.

Banker Margayya is 1983 Indian Kannada-language film directed by T. S. Nagabharana, based on the novel The Financial Expert by R. K. Narayan, and starring Lokesh in the lead role.

Operation Cocoon was the operation launched by the Special Task Force of Tamil Nadu Police to nab the forest brigand Veerappan and his associates, who were dominant in Sathyamangalam Forest in the South Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. The operation was headed by K. Vijay Kumar, and N. K. Senthamarai Kannan. Veerappan was shot dead in the operation on 18 October 2004 along with three of his associates, Sethukuli Govinda, Chandre Gowda and Sethumani, while four policemen were injured.
