Volvo M400 & M410 transmission

M400 is a gearbox from Volvo used in Volvo 164 and in a modified version, a limited number of the early 1970 1800E. A stronger version of the M40 gearbox designed to withstand the higher power of the B30 engine, it can be identified by the drain plug being on the opposite side to the M40. While never factory equipped with the "long stick" shifter handle, the shifter interchanges, opening up possibilities for swaps. Owners have found that while the bearings' lifespan might be similar to that of the M40, the torque capacity is in the order of double. Ratios are effectively the same (though derived from a different tooth count) as the M40s and followed that transmission's change to a lower (numerically higher) first gear beginning with the 1973 model year.+

Volvo Cars, stylized as VOLVO, is a Swedish luxury vehicles company. It is headquartered on Torslanda in Gothenburg, and is a subsidiary of the Chinese automotive company Geely. The company manufactures and markets sport utility vehicles (SUVs), station wagons, sedans and compact executive sedans. When AB Volvo was introduced on the Stockholm stock exchange in 1935, SKF sold most of its shares in the company. Its cars are marketed as being safe, solidly built, and reliable.

The Volvo 164 is a 4-door, 6-cylinder luxury sedan unveiled by Volvo at the Paris Motor Show early in October 1968 and first sold as a 1969 model. 46,008 164s were built before the car was succeeded by the 264 in 1975. The 164 was Volvo's first venture into the luxury segment since the end of PV 60 production in 1950, and was the first six-cylinder Volvo since the PV800 last produced in 1958.

M40 and M41 are both gearboxes produced by Koping Engineering for Volvo and used in Volvo Duett, Volvo Valp, Volvo Amazon, Volvo 142 and many more. It is a four speed gearbox. It was also available in s a stronger version called M400 and a three speed version called M30.

M410

When equipped with the electrically operated overdrive the gearbox was known as the M410.

Overdrive is the operation of an automobile cruising at sustained speed with reduced engine revolutions per minute (RPM), leading to better fuel consumption, lower noise, and lower wear. Use of the term is confused, as it is applied to several different, but related, meanings.
