Simplified Chinese characters Standardized Chinese characters developed in mainland China

Simplified Chinese characters are standardized Chinese characters prescribed in the Table of General Standard Chinese Characters for use in mainland China. Along with traditional Chinese characters, they are one of the two standard character sets of the contemporary Chinese written language. The government of the People's Republic of China in mainland China has promoted them for use in printing since the 1950s and 1960s to encourage literacy. They are officially used in the People's Republic of China, Malaysia and Singapore.

Pinyin Chinese romanization scheme for Mandarin

Hanyu Pinyin, often abbreviated to pinyin, is the official romanization system for Standard Chinese in mainland China and to some extent in Taiwan. It is often used to teach Standard Mandarin Chinese, which is normally written using Chinese characters. The system includes four diacritics denoting tones. Pinyin without tone marks is used to spell Chinese names and words in languages written with the Latin alphabet, and also in certain computer input methods to enter Chinese characters.

Channel 8 (Singapore) Chinese free-to-air TV channel in Singapore

Channel 8 is a Singaporean free-to-air television channel, airing in Mandarin-language. It was created by Radio and Television Singapore on 23 November 1963.

Founded by Molby Low Kian Chye (刘健财), Wawa Pictures was established in Singapore in August 2007 by Singapore's nationwide free-to-air terrestrial channels, Mediacorp TV (formerly Television Corporation of Singapore)'s Channel 5, Channel 8 and Channel U. [2] Currently, its content is distributed to markets like Malaysia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, China and Cambodia. [3]

Free-to-air (FTA) are television (TV) and radio services broadcast in clear (unencrypted) form, allowing any person with the appropriate receiving equipment to receive the signal and view or listen to the content without requiring a subscription, other ongoing cost or one-off fee. In the traditional sense, this is carried on terrestrial radio signals and received with an antenna.

Terrestrial television television content transmitted via signals in the air

Terrestrial television is a type of television broadcasting in which the television signal is transmitted by radio waves from the terrestrial (Earth-based) transmitter of a television station to a TV receiver having an antenna. The term terrestrial is more common in Europe and Latin America, while in the United States it is called broadcast or over-the-air television (OTA). The term "terrestrial" is used to distinguish this type from the newer technologies of satellite television, in which the television signal is transmitted to the receiver from an overhead satellite, cable television, in which the signal is carried to the receiver through a cable, and Internet Protocol television, in which the signal is received over an Internet stream or on a network utilizing the Internet Protocol. Terrestrial television stations broadcast on television channels with frequencies between about 52 and 600 MHz in the VHF and UHF bands. Since radio waves in these bands travel by line of sight, reception is limited by the visual horizon to distances of 40–60 miles (64–97 km).

Television Corporation of Singapore was a Singaporean television broadcasting entity. It was launched on 1 October 1994 and dissolved on 11 February 2001. It was composed of three autonomous divisions. TCS subsequently underwent a group restructuring of subsidiaries by Singapore International Media on 12 February 2001 to becoming MediaCorp TV.
