History

The locality takes its name from the name of a parish, which in turn was named after a pastoral run operated by Charles George Temple Chauvel in the 1850s, which may have been named after the Wieambilla Creek. [2]

Wieambilla Sawmills Provisional School opened in 1915 and closed circa 1926. [4]

Shootings

Around 16:30 AEST, 12 December 2022, four Chinchilla police officers visited a rural property on Wains Rd, Wieambilla, to investigate a missing person case. Three assailants shot at the officers, killing two and injuring two (who were later hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries), one of which took cover in tall grass. The assailants then set the grass ablaze. The fire drew the attention of a member of the public, who approached and was also fatally shot. An emergency was declared and a siege situation developed as specialist police arrived at the scene. Shortly after 22:30 AEST, two male perpetrators and one female perpetrator were fatally shot by police. [5] [6]
