Zoltán Kelemen (March 12, 1926 – May 9, 1979) was a Hungarian bass-baritone. He was born in Budapest and died in Zurich. He began studying music at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music before leaving Hungary in order to study in Rome. When he left Rome in 1959, he established himself in Germany, first in Augsburg and later in Cologne.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Kelemen was a favorite singer of Herbert von Karajan, with whom he recorded Fidelio in the role of Don Pizarro, Der Ring des Nibelungen as Alberich, Boris Godunov as Rangoni, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg as Fritz Kothner, The Merry Widow as Mirko Zeta, and others. Kelemen also recorded the role of Klingsor in Parsifal with Georg Solti (1971). At the Bayreuth Festival, Kelemen succeeded Gustav Neidlinger in the role of Alberich, in which he debuted in 1964 and with which he became identified. He sang it several times under the direction of Pierre Boulez, as well as at Covent Garden in 1976 with Sir Colin Davis conducting.
Like Neidlinger, who had long enjoyed universal acclaim for his portrayals of Alberich, Kelemen came to be identified by critics with this role more than with any other; one reviewer called his portrayal "as ever, a nasty little thing." [1] But Kelemen had a substantial non-Wagnerian repertoire as well, although (except for the Karajan productions mentioned above) not much of it was captured for posterity in studio recordings. He can be seen on DVD as Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro , opposite Walter Berry as Figaro and Claire Watson as the Countess, conducted by Karl Böhm. [2]

Gustav Neidlinger was a German bass-baritone, known as a performer of Wagner's villains, especially Alberich and Klingsor, from the early 1950s to the early 1970s. Born in Mainz, Neidlinger studied at the Frankfurt conservatory, where he was trained by Otto Rottsieper. He debuted in 1931 at the Stadttheater in Mainz, where he sang until 1934. In 1934 and 1935, he performed at the Stadttheater in Plauen, Sachsen. From 1935 to 1950, he was a member of the Hamburg opera, where In 1937 he took part in the world premiere of the opera Schwarzer Peter by Norbert Schultze. In 1950, he joined the Stuttgart Staatsoper, where he became very popular and was, in 1977, named an honorary member. In Stuttgart, he sang in Igor Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress. In 1956 he moved to the Vienna Staatsoper, where he had sung as early as 1941. He also sang at the Paris Opéra (1953–67) and at Covent Garden in London in tandem with the Stuttgart ensemble. He was honored with the title German Kammersänger in 1952.
Anna Tomowa-Sintow is a Bulgarian soprano who has sung to great acclaim in all the major opera houses around the world in a repertoire that includes Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, Heinrich Marschner,Wagner, and Strauss. She enjoyed a particularly close professional relationship with conductor Herbert von Karajan from 1973 until his death in 1989.

She was notably a principal artist at the Vienna State Opera for over a decade and was a frequent performer at the Salzburg Festival. She performed a broad opera repertoire that encompassed French, German, Italian, Czech, and Hungarian operas. The latter part of her career was dedicated mainly to performing the German operetta literature at the Vienna Volksoper. A very beautiful woman, she was a greatly admired Angele in Richard Heuberger’s Der Opernball.
