The 2013 FKF President's Cup (known as the GOtv Shield for sponsorship reasons) [1] is the 42nd season of Kenya's top domestic cup competition. It began on 20 July and ended on 17 November, with domestic broadcasting rights for the competition held by SuperSport.

FKF Presidents Cup

The FKF President's Cup is the top knockout tournament in Kenyan football. It was created in 1956, but during its existence the knockout tournament has had different names. It is the Kenyan equivalent to the FA Cup. In 2003 two different cup competition's were held in Kenya because the 4 semi-finalists of the President's Cup withdrew from the KFF and continued with their "Transparency Cup" while the KFF continued their tournament with already eliminated clubs.

The service launched in 1995 and provides multiple channels and services to their subscribers, which currently number around 11.9 million. After beating rivals and 2013 Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia in the final, A.F.C. Leopards will represent Kenya in the preliminary round of the 2014 CAF Confederation Cup and will play Gor Mahia again at the 2014 Kenyan Super Cup.

The 2013 Kenyan Premier League was the tenth season of the Kenyan Premier League since it began in 2003, marking a decade of its existence. It was also the Golden Jubilee season of top division football in Kenya since 1963. It began on 24 February 2013 and ended on 9 November 2013. League champions Gor Mahia earned a place in the preliminary round of the 2014 CAF Champions League while 2013 FKF President's Cup champions A.F.C. Leopards earned a place in the preliminary round of the 2014 CAF Confederation Cup.

Gor Mahia F.C. Kenyan association football club

Gor Mahia Football Club, commonly also known as K'Ogalo, is a football club based in Nairobi, Kenya. They have won the Kenyan Premier League a record 18 times, Five more than their arch-rivals A.F.C. Leopards, and have also won the FKF President's Cup a record 10 times. They are the only team from Kenya and the CECAFA region to win an African continental title to date, having won the African Cup Winners' Cup in 1987 after previously reaching the final in 1979.

A.F.C. Leopards Kenyan association football club

Abaluhya Football Club Leopards Sports Club, officially abbreviated as A.F.C. Leopards and also commonly known as Ingwe, is a Kenyan association football club based in Nairobi. It currently competes in the Kenyan Premier League, the top tier of the Kenyan football league system, and was founded in 1964. With 13 top-flight league titles to their name, AFC Leopards is Kenya's second most successful club behind Gor Mahia, with whom they regularly contest the Mashemeji Derby. The team currently plays its home games at the Nyayo National Stadium.

First round

First round ties were played from 20 July to 28 July. 32 teams from FKF Division One, the Kenyan Provincial League, the Kenyan County League and the Kenyan District League combined began their campaigns at this stage.

FKF Division One is the third tier in the Kenyan football league system. It has a promotion and relegation system with the Kenyan National Super League and the Kenyan Provincial League. It is controlled by the Football Kenya Federation. Most member clubs are semi-professional, while others are either fully professional or amateur.

Second round

The draw for the second round of the tournament was held on 7 August 2013 in central Nairobi. [2] [3]

Nairobi is the capital and the largest city of Kenya. The name comes from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nairobi, which translates to "cool water", a reference to the Nairobi River which flows through the city. The city proper had a population of 3,138,369 in the 2009 census, while the metropolitan area has a population of 6,547,547. The city is popularly referred to as the Green City in the Sun.

Third round

The third round of the tournament will be played on the weekend of 21–22 September 2013. [4]

Of the 16 teams that advanced from the second round, only Finlays Horticulture and Kariobangi Sharks are from Division One, while the rest are from the Premier League. No Provincial League side made it through the second round.

Finlays Horticulture Association Football Club is an association football club based in Naivasha, Kenya. The club currently competes in the Kenyan National Super League, and plays its home games at the Kingfisher Grounds.

Kenyan Premier League association football league

The Kenyan Premier League (KPL), also known as the SportPesa Premier League (SPL) for sponsorship reasons, is a professional league for men's association football clubs in Kenya. Standing at the top of the Kenyan football league system, the league was formed in 1963 under the Kenya Football Federation but is now controlled by the Football Kenya Federation. It is contested by 18 clubs and operates on a promotion and relegation system with the Kenyan National Super League. Gor Mahia are the league's current champions and most successful club, with a record 17 titles to their name.

Quarter-finals

The quarter-finals of the tournament were played on the weekend of 12–13 October 2013. [5] All matches were played at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

Of the 8 teams that advanced from the third round, Finlays Horticulture was the only remaining FKF Division One side in the tournament. The other 7 clubs were from the Premier League.

Semi-finals

The semi-finals were played on the weekend of 19–20 October at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani. [6]

Controversy followed the match between Gor Mahia and Sony Sugar when fans of the former invaded the match to attack the latter while celebrating the win. Goalkeeper Wycliffe Kasaya and other players were injured in the fray and admitted to hospital later on. [7]

Third place playoff

The third place playoff was played on 16 November 2013 at the Nairobi City Stadium. [8]

Final

The final was played on Sunday 17 November at the Nyayo National Stadium. [9] It was the final Nairobi derby match of the season. [10] Noah Wafula was named Man of the Match and Player of the Tournament after the game. [11]
