Rajivaratna Gandhi was an Indian politician who served as the 6th prime minister of India from 1984 to 1989. He took office after the assassination of his mother,then–prime minister Indira Gandhi,to become the youngest Indian prime minister at the age of 40. During his tenure,Gandhi introduced several initiatives and policies aimed at modernising India and promoting economic development. He emphasised technology,computerisation,and telecommunications,launching the "Vision 2020" program to transform India into a technologically advanced nation.

Varahagiri Venkata Giri was an Indian politician and activist who served as the fourth president of India from 24 August 1969 to 24 August 1974. He also third vice president of India from 13 May 1967 to 3 May 1969. He is the first president to be elected as an independent candidate. He was succeeded by Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed as president in 1974. After the end of his full term,Giri was honoured by the Government of India with the Bharat Ratna in 1975. Giri died on 24 June 1980.

Situated on Lok Kalyan Marg,New Delhi,the official name of the Prime Minister's residence complex is Panchavati. It is spread over 4.9 hectares of land,comprising five bungalows in Lutyens' Delhi,built in the 1980s,which are the Prime Minister's office,residency zone and security establishment,including one occupied by Special Protection Group (SPG) and another being a guest house. However,even though there are 5 bungalows,they are collectively called 7,Lok Kalyan Marg. It does not house the Prime Minister's Office but has a conference room for informal meetings.

The sprawling 88 acres estate is located on a cape in the Goan capital,Panjim. Known by the name "Palácio do Cabo" until it gained official status as the residence of the governor of Goa,this palace is said to be built between the 16th and 17th century in the erstwhile Portuguese India. The Special Protection Group (SPG) is an agency of the Government of India whose sole responsibility is protecting the Prime Minister of India and in some cases,his or her family. It was formed in 1988 by an Act of the Parliament of India. The SPG protects the Prime Minister at all times both in India and abroad,as well as the Prime Minister's immediate family members residing with them at their official residence. Family members,however,may decline security.

The assassination of Rajiv Gandhi,former Prime Minister of India,occurred as a result of a suicide bombing in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu,India on 21 May 1991. It was carried out by 17-year-old Kalaivani Rajaratnam,a member of the Sri Lankan Tamil separatist organization Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
