Cycling at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics – Boys' BMX

Last updated

Boys' BMX was part of the cycling at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics program. The event consisted of a seeding round, then elimination rounds where after three races the top 4 would progress to the next round until the final where only a single race was held. It was held on 19 August 2010 at Tampines Bike Park. This was not an official individual event and therefore medals were not given. However the performance of the athletes provided points towards the Combined Mixed Team event for cycling.

2010 Summer Youth Olympics 2010 edition of the Summer Youth Olympics

The 2010 Summer Youth Olympics were the first edition of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG), an international multi-sport and cultural event for youths based on the tradition of the Olympic Games. Held in Singapore from 14 to 26 August 2010, it was the first International Olympic Committee-sanctioned event held in Southeast Asia. The Games featured about 3,600 athletes aged 14–18 from 204 nations, who competed in 201 events in 26 sports. No official medal tables were published, but the most successful nation was China, followed by Russia; hosts Singapore did not win any gold medals. Most unique features of the YOG, such as mixed-NOCs teams and the Culture and Education Programme (CEP), made their debut at the 2010 Games.

Tampines Bike Park

Tampines Bike Park was formerly located in the eastern part of Singapore, in the Tampines Regional Centre. Just one-kilometre away from Tampines Mall, the entrance of the park and the parking lot are located along Tampines Avenue 9 at the junction of Tampines Avenue 7. In May 2013, it was reported that the Tampines Bike Park will be cleared for development into a new town, less than 3 years after it was presented to Singaporeans as a legacy of the inaugural 2010 Summer Youth Olympics held in Singapore. It closed in 2014.

Combined Mixed Team Event was the main event of cycling at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics program. Each team consisted of three boys and one girl. There were seven sub-events where cyclists competed with other teams in order to earn points; the team with the lowest points after the seven sub-events was declared the winner. Each boy raced in one of Cross Country, Time Trial and BMX while the girl competed in all three events, all three boys also raced in the Road Race. The event was held over the period of four days from 17-19 and 22 August 2010. The venues were at Tampines Bike Park for the Cross Country, Boys’ Time Trial and BMX and The Float at Marina Bay for Girls’ Time Trial and the Road Race.
