Engineer Sheikh Abdul Rashid is a Kashmiri politician and Member of Parliament (MP) from Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir,India. Earlier he was Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Jammu and Kashmir,from the Langate constituency in Handwara. Rasheed is the founder and patron of the Jammu and Kashmir Awami Ittehad Party. Rashid transitioned from a career in construction engineering to politics in 2008,winning the Langate constituency as an independent candidate in both the 2008 and 2014 legislative assembly elections. [3] Rashid subsequently established the Jammu and Kashmir Awami Ittehad Party. Despite facing imprisonment on terror-funding charges,he secured a significant victory over former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections,underscoring his substantial grassroots support and political influence in the region. [4] Rashid defeated former chief minister of Jammu &Kashmir Omar Abdullah in 2024 lok sabha election. [5] [6]
In the year 2005,Rashid was arrested by SOG in Srinagar for supporting militants subsequently jailed for three months and 17 days. A charge of anti-national activities was slapped on him. He was kept in Cargo,Humhama and Raj bagh prisons. Later Chief Judaical Magistrate Srinagar dropped all charges against him on humanitarian grounds. According to Rashid he was arrested by motley group of counter-insurgents that worked closely with the State police and took him to an interrogation centre,where he was "interrogated." After five months of custody,he negotiated his release,paying up Rs. 3.0 lakhs by selling his cow,goats and father's property. In Aug 2019,he was arrested under UAPA case. He filed his nomination form for contesting 2024 parliamentary election from jail and won by the margin of 2 lac 4 thousand by defeating former Chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah. [7]
On 8 October 2015 Engineer Rashid was assaulted by BJP MLA's inside the Jammu and Kashmir assembly for hosting a party where he served beef on the lawns of the government circuit with a view to oppose the controversial central Government order banning the consumption of beef in India. [8]
He was also attacked with black ink in Press Club New Delhi by BJP cadets a day after his critical comments regarding the lynching of a Kashmiri truck driver in Udhampur. [9] [10]
Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was an Indian politician who served twice as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir,during November 2002–November 2005 and March 2015–January 2016. He was also Minister of Tourism in Rajiv Gandhi's cabinet and Home Minister of India in V. P. Singh's cabinet. He started in the wing of the National Conference led by G. M. Sadiq,which later merged into the Indian National Congress. He switched to Janata Dal in 1987,eventually founding his own regional party,People's Democratic Party (PDP). The PDP continues to be a political force in Jammu and Kashmir,currently led by his daughter Mehbooba Mufti.

Asiya Andrabi is a Kashmiri separatist and founding leader of Dukhtaran-e-Millat. This group is part of the separatist organisation All Parties Hurriyat Conference in the Kashmir valley. Government of India has declared it as a "banned organization". The organisation claims that it aims for the freedom of Kashmir from India.
On 26 May 2008,the government of India and the state Government of Jammu and Kashmir reached an agreement to transfer 99 acres (0.40 km2) of forest land to the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) in the main Kashmir Valley to set up temporary shelters and facilities for Hindu pilgrims to Amarnath Temple. This caused a controversy,with demonstrations from the Kashmir valley against the land transfer and protests from the Jammu region supporting it. The largest demonstration saw more than 500,000 protesters at a single rally,among the largest in Kashmir's history.

The 2010 Kashmir unrest was a series of violent protests and riots in the Kashmir Division and Northern Jammu Division of Jammu and Kashmir,India which started in June 2010 after the Indian Army claimed to have killed three Pakistani infiltrators in which a soldier of the Territorial Army,a counter-insurgent and a former special police officer had found three young men from their Nadihal village in Baramulla district and killed them in a "staged" encounter at Sona Pindi. The protests occurred in a movement launched by Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir in June 2010,who called for the complete demilitarisation of Jammu and Kashmir. The All Parties Hurriyat Conference made this call to a strike,citing human rights abuses by security forces. Rioters shouting pro-independence slogans,defied curfew,attacked riot police with stones and burnt vehicles and buildings. The protests started out as anti India protests but later were also targeted against the United States following the 2010 Qur'an-burning controversy. The riot police consisting of Jammu and Kashmir Police and Indian Para-military forces fired teargas shells rubber bullets and also live ammunition on the protesters,resulting in 112 deaths,including many teenagers and an 11-year-old boy. The protests subsided after the Indian government announced a package of measures aimed at defusing the tensions in September 2010.
Elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are conducted in accordance with the Constitution of India to elect the representatives of various bodies at national,state and district levels including the 114 seat unicameral Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and the Parliament of India. The first elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir took place between 28 November and 19 December 2020 in the form of by-elections to District Development Councils and municipal and panchayat level bodies. A fresh delimitation process for assembly constituencies began in February–March 2020.
The Jammu and Kashmir Awami League is a political party in the Indian-administered union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Tariq Hameed Karra is an Indian politician and was a member of parliament to the 16th Lok Sabha from Srinagar,Jammu and Kashmir. He had won the 2014 Indian general election being a Jammu &Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party candidate by defeating Dr. Farooq Abdullah of National Conference by more than 40000 votes,and thereby handing the veteran politician his first ever electoral defeat in 4 decades. He was a fierce critic of the BJP-PDP alliance from the very beginning and resigned from the Lok Sabha and PDP,of which he was a founding member as a mark of protest against innocent civilian killings in September 2016 and later joined the Indian National Congress in February 2017 and was later nominated as a member of Congress Working Committee,the first for any politician from Kashmir valley. He has also served as the Finance,Planning and Law minister for Jammu and Kashmir state.
The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election,2014 was held in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir in five phases from 25 November –20 December 2014. Voters elected 87 members to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly,which ends its six-year term on 19 January 2020. The results were declared on 23 December 2014. Voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) along with EVMs were used in 3 assembly seats out of 87 in Jammu Kashmir elections.
