The Monash University Faculty of Science is one of the largest science faculties in Australia, with over 4,000 students. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses, from Bachelor's degrees through to Masters and PhDs. It is based at the Monash Clayton campus in Melbourne, and has extended to Selangor, Malaysia as the School of Science. [1]

The Faculty offers units of study and research in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth, Atmosphere and Environment, Mathematics, and Physics and Astronomy.

In addition to the Bachelor of Science [2] degree, the Faculty of Science offers two unique Advanced Honours degrees: the Bachelor of Science Advanced - Global Challenges (Honours) [3] and the Bachelor of Science Advanced - Research (Honours). [4]

Rankings

The School of Chemistry within the Faculty was ranked the best in Australia for teaching and research according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2015. [5]

The Faculty of Science operates, and is associated with, a number of collaborative research centres and platforms encouraging research and industry collaboration including:

ERA results 2015 (Excellence in Research for Australia)

Most scientific disciplines within the Monash Faculty of Science saw an increase in ERA ratings from 2012 to 2015. [12]

Physical Sciences and Chemical Sciences achieved an overall rating of 5 in 2015 - well above world standard - with Mathematical Sciences and Biological Sciences achieving an overall rating of 4 - above world standard.

Facilities and infrastructure

A significant investment has been made in infrastructure at Monash University’s Faculty of Science including the recent development of a multi-million dollar Science Precinct, housing new buildings and facilities for students and academics. This includes a new $79.5M chemistry building. [13]

Examples of innovation include the PACE (Physics and Astronomy Collaborative-learning Environment) studio, which reconsiders approaches to teaching Physics and Astronomy. [14]

The Faculty of Science is the largest of six faculties at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1962, the faculty is located in the Westdale neighbourhood. It houses 6,800 undergraduate students and 600 graduate students, across 39 upper-year undergraduate programs ranging from astrophysics, biochemistry, earth and environmental sciences, to life sciences, human behaviour, kinesiology and medical and radiation sciences. The School of Physical Sciences is an academic unit of the University of California, Irvine (UCI) that conducts academic research and teaching in the field of physical sciences. It offers both pre-professional training and general education in the departments of chemistry, earth system science, mathematics, and physics and astronomy. The school enrolls 1,400 undergraduate and graduate students and is one of the top schools in the nation in the number of degrees it confers in the area of physical sciences. It also offers specializations such as biochemistry, statistics, math for economics, applied and computational mathematics, astrophysics, applied physics, biomedical physics, and education. In 1995, the school gained international prominence when Frank Sherwood Rowland, a professor in chemistry and Frederick Reines, a professor in physics, won the Nobel Prize in their respective fields. It was the first time two people won the prize in the same year in two different fields at the same public university.

It is shifting to its new Integrated campus on the Eastern metropolitan bypass 50 meters from Jyotirindra Nandy Metro station behind Metro Cash and Carry. Its Ionospheric and Earthquake Research Centre and optical observatory (IERCOO) where a 24-inch optical telescope (Vashista) has been installed. School and college students regularly carry out sky watching using its 10-inch telescope (Arundhati). The ground floor of the Integrated Campus will have an Astronomy and Space Museum which will be inaugurated very soon.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering is a constituent body of Macquarie University. The Faculty offers undergraduate and postgraduate coursework and research degree programs and is home to a number of internationally recognised research centres and also distinguished research staff. The Science Faculty is based on the Eastern half of the Academic Core at Macquarie University and is located near to the Macquarie University Research Park and the Macquarie University Hospital, thus allowing practical links with industry and research. The Faculty is renowned for its research in such areas as chiropractic science, proteomic analysis, climate risk research, environmental science and ecological studies. According to The Good Universities Guide of Australian Universities, graduates within the Faculty of Science receive starting salaries higher than those who graduate in science disciplines at other Australian universities.

The academic structure of the Australian National University is organised as seven academic colleges which contain a network of inter-related faculties, research schools and centres. Each college is responsible for undergraduate and postgraduate education as well as research in its respective field.

The College of Science, Mathematics, and Technology was the science college of the former (1992-2015) University of Texas at Brownsville. It consisted of six academic departments. The six departments employ diverse faculty members - many of whom are leading experts in the fields - who have received funding from a variety of funding agencies, including the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Education, and the Department of Defense, among others. The average active ongoing external funding is about 25-30 million dollars. In 2002 the Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy (CGWA) research center was founded to help "develop excellence in research and education in areas related to gravitational wave astronomy."

The Faculty of Engineering at Monash University is one of the largest engineering faculties in Australia, with over 6,700 students in 2015.

Michael S. Fuhrer is a US/Australian physicist recognised internationally as a pioneer in atomically-thin (two-dimensional) materials, including graphene and novel topological materials, with expertise in fabrication and characterisation of their electronic and optical properties.

Susan Marjorie Scott is an Australian mathematical physicist whose work concerns general relativity, gravitational singularities, and black holes. She is a Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Australian National University (ANU).
