Nemom Railway Terminal also known as Thiruvananthapuram South Terminal, (Code:NEM) is one of the six railway stations serving the city of Trivandrum which is also proposed to act as the second satellite station to Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station in the state of Kerala, India. [1] Nemom station comes under the Thiruvananthapuram railway division of the Southern Railway zone, Indian Railways.

Train operating centre

Indian Railways have finalized a proposal for setting up an operating centre in Nemom, for trains departing from and terminating at Thiruvananthapuram Central. All coach maintenance activities performed in Thiruvananthapuram Central is proposed to be transferred to Nemom once the operating centre is commissioned. [2] Railways has proposed to set up 10 pit lines for maintenance of 30 trains, 12 stabling lines, sick lines and staff quarters at Nemom. [3]

Proposed new passenger terminal

The Ministry of Railways, in its budget for fiscal year 2011–2012, announced to develop Nemom as second satellite passenger terminal to Thiruvananthapuram Central. Thiruvananthapuram thus will become the first city in Kerala to have two satellite stations. Nemom will soon be developed as a full-fledged Passenger Terminus (Coaching Terminal) with 5 platforms and will act as a terminus station for trains coming to Thiruvananthapuram Central, thereby reducing rush/congestion in the station.

An amount of Rs. 77.30 crores have been allotted for the first phase of the new Terminal, as per Shri O. Rajagopal M.L.A., as reported by the media including The Hindu. [4]

It is also proposed to lay one more track between Nemom and Kochuveli to ease the traffic in this corridor. This stretch will become the first in the state to have a three-line service. [5]

Extension of proposed Sabari rail line from Erumely via Pathanamthitta, Punalur, Nedumanagadu is expected to connect with proposed Nemom terminal. The station is on the way of renaming to Thiruvananthapuram South Terminal.

Thampanoor is the geographic center (CBD) of the Indian city of Thiruvananthapuram. The busiest railway station of the state in terms of daily passengers, Thiruvananthapuram Central, is located at Thampanoor. Most incoming trains from Kollam direction halt here for the convenience of passengers in the general area and to reduce the crowd at Thiruvananthapuram Central. Thiruvananthapuram Railway Division (TVC) is one of the six administrative divisions of the Southern Railway, Indian Railways. It has its headquarters at Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of the state of Kerala, India. Thiruvananthapuram Division was formed on 2 October 1979 which serves the eight districts of southern part of the Kerala, Kanniyakumari district and some parts of Tirunelveli District in Tamil Nadu. Garib Rath service was introduced in 2005 by former Indian railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. It is an air conditioned Express train that can run at the same speed as Rajadhani Express or Shatabdi Express. The specialty of the service is the ticket fare is inexpensive compared to the other luxury trains and it is faster than other express trains.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Silver Line (K-Rail)</span> Semi-high speed rail corridor

The Silver Line is a proposed higher-speed rail line in India that would connect Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city, and Kasaragod of Kerala state. It will have an operating speed of 200 kilometres per hour (120 mph), [Maximum Design Speed: 220 kmph, ] allowing trains to cover the 532-kilometre (331 mi) distance in less than four hours, compared to the present 10 to 12 hours it takes to traverse this distance. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Chengannur, Kottayam, Kochi, Thrissur, Tirur, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod will be the stations in this corridor. The project is temporarily halted by the state government till the Central government approval.

Punalur railway station is the second-largest Railway Station In Kollam District located at Nedumkayam, Punalur on the Kollam–Sengottai branch line. It is the Gateway of Sabarimala. For Sabarimala devotees from Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Telangana and Karnataka, SCT–PUU is the easy way. The temples related to Sabarimala like Achankovil, Aryankavu, and Kulathuppuzha are Located near Punalur. The Kollam–Shencottah railway line is the first railway line in erstwhile Travancore state and is more than a century old. The Kollam–Sengottai section is part of the Kollam–Chennai metre-gauge rail route commissioned by the British during 1904. The line which was metre gauge has been completely converted into broad gauge and train services started.

Kannur has a good road network connecting to Bangalore, Mangalore, Kodagu and Cochin. The railway station is also well connected to all parts of India. There is new International airport from Kannur opened on 9 December 2018, other nearest airports are at Calicut and Mangalore. Thalassery, Payyanur, Taliparamba and Iritty are the other transport hubs.

The Ernakulam–Kottayam–Kayamkulam line is a railway line which runs through the districts of Ernakulam, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha in Kerala state of India. This railway line starts as a branch line from Ernakulam Town railway station towards Kottayam and joins with the Ernakulam–Kayamkulam coastal line route via Alappuzha at Kayamkulam Junction. This line comes under the Thiruvananthapuram railway division of Southern Railway Zone of Indian Railways. The line has a total distance of 118 km (73 mi). The Ernakulam Town/Ernakulam Junction - Kottayam section opened in 1956-57 and Kottayam - Kollam section in 1957.

Kochuveli Terminal –Mangaluru Junction Antyodaya Express is an express train belonging to Thiruvananthapuram division, Southern Railway zone that runs between Kochuveli and Mangaluru Junction. It operates with 16355/16356 train numbers on bi-weekly basis. It is the first unpainted stainless steel train of India. This train answers the long standing demand of the people of North Kerala for a fourth train to the capital.

The railway opened on 15 April 1979. This is the southernmost section of Indian Railways. The terminus of the line is at Kanyakumari railway station.
