WBC Akademik Sofia is a Bulgarian women's basketball club from Sofia.

Bulgaria, officially the Republic of Bulgaria, is a country in Southeast Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the north, Serbia and North Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south, and the Black Sea to the east. The capital and largest city is Sofia; other major cities are Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas. With a territory of 110,994 square kilometres (42,855 sq mi), Bulgaria is Europe's 16th-largest country.

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players each, opposing one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective of shooting a basketball through the defender's hoop while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop. A field goal is worth two points, unless made from behind the three-point line, when it is worth three. After a foul, timed play stops and the player fouled or designated to shoot a technical foul is given one or more one-point free throws. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but if regulation play expires with the score tied, an additional period of play (overtime) is mandated.

Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. The city is at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the western part of the country. Being in the centre of the Balkan peninsula, it is midway between the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea, and closest to the Aegean Sea.

The Bulgarian Women's Basketball Championship is the premier league for women's basketball clubs in Bulgaria. Slavia Sofia is the championship's most successful club with 15 titles between 1953 and 2004 followed by Akademik Sofia and Levski Sofia with eight titles, Lokomotiv Sofia with seven and Minyor Pernik with six, while Neftokhimik Burgas has been the most successful team in recent years with 5 titles since 2005.

The Bulgarian Women's Basketball Cup is an annual cup competition for Bulgarian women's basketball clubs founded in 1951, six years after the national championship. Levski Sofia is the most successful team in the competition with 13 titles between 1969 and 1991, followed by Slavia Sofia with ten, WBC Montana with seven, Neftokhimik Burgas with six and Akademik Sofia and Minyor Pernik with five.

The Bulgarian National Basketball League (NBL) is the highest professional basketball league in Bulgaria. The current league was founded in 2008, although the first tier level exists since 1942 and was previously called the Bulgarian A Division. The games in the NBL are played under FIBA rules. The most successful team in NBL history is PBC Academic, that has won 26 national titles.

The 1960 European Women's Basketball Championship was the 7th regional championship held by FIBA Europe for women. The competition was held in Sofia, Bulgaria and took place June 3–11, 1960.
