Enrica Lexie (called Olympic Sky since 2013) is an Italian Aframax oil-tanker. In 2012, the ship was involved in the shooting of two Indian fisherman in the Laccadive Sea.

History

2008–2012

The Enrica Lexie was built in 2008. She was originally owned by Naples-based Dolphin Tankers whose parent company is Fratelli d'Amato. [1] [2]

2012 shooting incident

On 15 February 2012, the Enrica Lexia was involved in the shooting of two fisherman in the Laccadive Sea off the Indian coast. [3] The tanker was taken to the port of Kochi on 17 February 2012 under escort by the Indian Coast Guard. [4] The ship was allowed to leave 80 days later, on 6 May 2012 after the owners posted a surety bond. [5]

2013–2015

In 2013, she was renamed as Olympic Sky and registered under a Greek flag; vessel management was transferred to Olympic Shipping & Management SA. [1] [6] AIS plots show the tanker operating in the Indian Ocean region. [7] [8]

In 2015, the tanker was registered again in the Marshall Islands. [9] [10]

On March 24, 1989, while owned by the former Exxon Shipping Company, and captained by Joseph Hazelwood and First Mate James Kunkel bound for Long Beach, California, the vessel ran aground on the Bligh Reef resulting in the second largest oil spill in United States history. The size of the spill is estimated to have been 40,900 to 120,000 m3, or 257,000 to 750,000 barrels. In 1989, the Exxon Valdez oil spill was listed as the 54th largest spill in history.

TI-class supertanker

The TI class of supertankers comprises the ships TI Africa, TI Asia, TI Europe and TI Oceania, where the "TI" refers to the VLCC tanker pool operator Tankers International. The class were the first ULCCs to be built in 25 years.

MT Haven, formerly Amoco Milford Haven, was a VLCC, leased to Troodos Shipping. In 1991, while loaded with 144,000 tonnes of crude oil, the ship exploded, caught fire and sank off the coast of Genoa, Italy, killing six Cypriot crew and flooding the Mediterranean with up to 50,000 tonnes of crude oil. It broke in two and sank after burning for three days.

Salem was a supertanker which was scuttled off the coast of Guinea on 17 January 1980, after secretly unloading 192,000 tons of oil in Durban, South Africa. The oil was delivered in breach of the South African oil embargo, and the ship was scuttled to fraudulently claim insurance.

Savina Caylyn is an oil tanker of the Italian shipping line Fratelli D'Amato. On 8 February 2011, she was hijacked by Somali pirates some 500 miles (800 km) off the Indian Coast and some 880 miles (1,420 km) off the Somali Coast. The 17 Indian and 5 Italian crew members of the Italy-registered vessel are reported to be unharmed, but taken hostage.

MT Phoenix was a tanker which went aground in heavy seas at Sheffield Beach just north of Ballito near Durban, South Africa on the morning of 26 July 2011. The vessel was on its way to India to be scrapped when it ran aground. After three attempts, it was refloated, towed and then scuttled and sunk in 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) of water, about 80 kilometres (43 nmi) offshore of Amanzimtoti, south of Durban. The vessel was reportedly owned by either Suhair Khan of Dubai or Marika Investments, Lagos, Nigeria.

The Enrica Lexie case was an international controversy about a shooting off the western coast of India. On 15 February 2012, two Indian fishermen were killed off the coast of Kerala, India, aboard St. Antony. India alleged that the two Italian marines aboard the Italian-flagged commercial oil tanker MB Enrica Lexie killed the fishermen.

She is well known for her rescue operation which she conducted successfully in June 2015 saving seven fishermen who were trapped for a week in a boat. she is in the adivosary board of delhi based maritime magazine name Sea and Coast.
