Matthew Chamberlain (born April 17, 1967) is an American session musician, [1] drummer, producer and songwriter. He has played with various artists, including Pearl Jam, Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, David Bowie, Tori Amos, The Wallflowers, Elton John, Fiona Apple, Bob Dylan, Brandi Carlile, Garbage, Macy Gray, Soundgarden, Painted Shield.

Biography

Chamberlain was born in San Pedro, California on April 17, 1967. [2] He began learning how to play the drums at 15 years old, taking lessons with David Garibaldi from the band Tower of Power. He attended North Texas State's music program, leaving after less than a year. After leaving college, he moved to Dallas, Texas and played with multiple bands in the Dallas Deep Ellum music scene . [1]

While in Texas, he joined the band Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, and was the drummer on their album, "Ghost of A Dog." [1] [2]

He was the second drummer of the band Pearl Jam and played with them for about three weeks in the summer of 1991. He was in their music video for their song "Alive." [1]

During the 1991 and 1992 season, he was a drummer for the house band of Saturday Night Live. [1] [2]

Along with Skerik, Brad Houser and Mike Dillon, he co-created the jazz-fusion band Critters Buggin. [3]

In 2016, 2019 and 2021, [4] he won Modern Drummer magazine's readers poll in the Studio Musician category. [5] In 2014 he filled in for drummer Matt Cameron in Soundgarden. He played over 51 shows with them through South America, Europe and a co-headlining tour with Nine Inch Nails in the United States.

He was the Music Director for More Music at The Moore Theatre Seattle, Washington, [6] in 2019 and 2020.

Chamberlain joined Bob Dylan's Never Ending Tour in 2019 and played on his 2020 release Rough and Rowdy Ways . [7] [8]

In 2020 he joined the collaborative project Painted Shield with Pearl Jam Guitarist Stone Gossard, singer Mason Jennings, Seattle keyboardist Brittany Davis and Seattle Bassist Jeff Fielder. They currently have three records out. [9] [10] In 2024, he began touring with jazz pianist Diana Krall.[ citation needed ]

Tori Amos is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. She is a classically trained musician with a mezzo-soprano vocal range. Having already begun composing instrumental pieces on piano, Amos won a full scholarship to the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University at the age of five, the youngest person ever to have been admitted. She had to leave at the age of eleven when her scholarship was discontinued for what Rolling Stone described as "musical insubordination". Amos was the lead singer of the short-lived 1980s pop group Y Kant Tori Read before achieving her breakthrough as a solo artist in the early 1990s. Edie Brickell & New Bohemians is an alternative rock jam band that originated in Dallas, Texas, in the mid-1980s. The band is widely known for their 1988 hit "What I Am" from the album Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars. Their music contains elements of rock, folk, blues, and jazz. Following the 1990 release of their second album Ghost of a Dog, lead singer Edie Brickell left the band and married singer-songwriter Paul Simon. In 2006, she and the band launched a new web site and released a new album, Stranger Things.

The Pearl Jam 1991 United States Tour was a concert tour by the American rock band Pearl Jam. It was the band's first tour since taking the name "Pearl Jam".

Loosegroove Records is a Seattle based record label formed by Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard and Brad drummer Regan Hagar in 1994. Initially a subsidiary of Sony before going independent in 1996, Loosegroove signed many up and coming artists from various musical genres, especially rock and hip hop. Significantly, Gossard signed Queens of the Stone Age to Loosegroove, releasing the band's debut album in 1998. Others who worked with Loosegroove include Critters Buggin, Weapon of Choice, Malfunkshun, Devilhead, Prose and Concepts, Ponga, Hi Fi Killers, Nash Kato and Eureka Farm. Loosegroove also released the Seattle Hip Hop Compilation 14 Fathoms Deep in January 1997, and the soundtrack to the movie Chicago Cab in 1998. Loosegroove Records closed in 2000. In 2000 the Loosegroove catalog was acquired by WILL Records, who now operates as Lakeshore Records.

<i>Rough and Rowdy Ways</i> 2020 studio album by Bob Dylan

Rough and Rowdy Ways is the thirty-ninth studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on June 19, 2020, through Columbia Records. It is Dylan's first album of original songs since his 2012 album Tempest, following three releases that covered traditional pop standards. The album was recorded at Sound City Studios from January to early March 2020. The session musicians included all of the then-current members of Dylan's Never Ending Tour band alongside other musicians, such as Blake Mills and Fiona Apple. The album's sound was described by critics as Americana, folk, blues, and rhythm and blues.
