Stephen Coast (born 20 December 1980) is a British entrepreneur and the founder of the OpenStreetMap community-based world mapping project and CloudMade, a geography-related company.

Coast grew up in Walderslade and London, United Kingdom.

Career

Coast interned at Wolfram Research before studying computing science at University College London (UCL). [2]

In July 2004, he founded the OpenStreetMap project (OSM). [3]

Coast set up Z.X.V. Ltd. with Nick Black, Tom Carden and Ben Gimpert as a technology consultancy in 2005. In 2008 this became CloudMade after investment by Nikolaj Nyholm and Sunstone Capital (company's website claims it was established in 2007 [4] ). [5] He resigned from CloudMade in October 2010, [6] although he remained a shareholder.[ citation needed ]

On 23 November 2010, Coast announced that he had accepted a position as Principal Architect at Microsoft's Bing Mobile. [7]

On 3 September 2013, Coast wrote on his blog that he had started to work for TeleNav, taking care of OSM development for the company's Scout navigator. [8]

In March 2014, Coast became an advisor to Auth0, an identity-as-a-service provider. [9]

In November 2015, Coast published "The Book of OSM". The book contains 15 interviews conducted by Coast with various users who had participated in the project since its beginning. [10]

In January 2016, he stepped down from full-time work at TeleNav [11] and started his work as a board advisor in Navmii. [12] In March 2016 he started working as Chief Evangelist for what3words. [13] [14] In May 2016 he became an advisor in MapJam. [15] In fall 2017, he joined DigitalGlobe. [16] In spring 2019 he joined TomTom as a vice president in the Maps department. In July 2022, Grab announced Steve join Grab as Head of Engineering, Geo Innovation. [17]

Personal life

In 2008, Coast moved to the United States, first to San Francisco. In 2009 he moved to Colorado with his wife Hurricane (born McEwen). In November 2010 Coast wrote that he would be moving to Seattle, Washington. [18] He moved back to Colorado in 2013.

OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a free, open geographic database updated and maintained by a community of volunteers via open collaboration. Contributors collect data from surveys, trace from aerial imagery and also import from other freely licensed geodata sources. OpenStreetMap is freely licensed under the Open Database License and as a result commonly used to make electronic maps, inform turn-by-turn navigation, assist in humanitarian aid and data visualisation. OpenStreetMap uses its own topology to store geographical features which can then be exported into other GIS file formats. The OpenStreetMap website itself is an online map, geodata search engine and editor.

Mapnik is an open-source mapping toolkit for desktop and server based map rendering, written in C++. Artem Pavlenko, the original developer of Mapnik, set out with the explicit goal of creating beautiful maps by employing the sub-pixel anti-aliasing of the Anti-Grain Geometry (AGG) library. Mapnik now also has a Cairo rendering backend. For handling common software tasks such as memory management, file system access, regular expressions, and XML parsing, Mapnik utilizes the Boost C++ libraries. An XML file can be used to define a collection of mapping objects that determine the appearance of a map, or objects can be constructed programmatically in C++, Python, and Node.js.

TeleType Co., Inc. is a privately held company in the United States, specialized in developing software for GPS devices. It was founded in 1981, under the name TeleTypesetting Company and it is based in Boston, Massachusetts. The company's product line includes automotive and commercial GPS navigation systems and other products including GPS receivers and tracking units. It develops and sells the WorldNav software for PC and Windows CE, tools for converting third party maps into WorldNav maps, an SDK and an API that allow the customization of the WorldNav application. TeleType Co. also offers consultancy services for those interested in acquiring and adapting the source code of their software products.

Revolution Analytics is a statistical software company focused on developing open source and "open-core" versions of the free and open source software R for enterprise, academic and analytics customers. Revolution Analytics was founded in 2007 as REvolution Computing providing support and services for R in a model similar to Red Hat's approach with Linux in the 1990s as well as bolt-on additions for parallel processing. In 2009 the company received nine million in venture capital from Intel along with a private equity firm and named Norman H. Nie as their new CEO. In 2010 the company announced the name change as well as a change in focus. Their core product, Revolution R, would be offered free to academic users and their commercial software would focus on big data, large scale multiprocessor computing, and multi-core functionality.

iD is a free software online editor for OpenStreetMap (OSM) geodata created in JavaScript and released in 2013. Specialized forks of iD include RapiD, developed by Facebook as an import tool for reviewing and adding roads detected by proprietary Facebook algorithms.

You can use any type of mapping data, such as high resolution aerial images, open web maps, vector maps, CAD drawings, BIM models and databases. twiGIS supports Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Safari web browsers.
