The International Network of Liberal Women (INLW) is an association of women from around the world who support liberal values, which they define as "Individual freedom, human rights, the rule of law, tolerance, equality of opportunity, social justice, free trade and market economy." It is a member of Liberal International. [1]

Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on liberty, consent of the governed, and equality before the law. Liberals espouse a wide array of views depending on their understanding of these principles, but they generally support limited government, individual rights, capitalism, democracy, secularism, gender equality, racial equality, internationalism, freedom of speech, freedom of the press and freedom of religion.

INLW's aims include empowering women and expanding their participation in politics. INLW sends consultants to conferences such as the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, [2] the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats, [3] and the Istanbul Convention [4] to provide expertise on issues such as discrimination and violence against women. Chapters include the Netherlands, Morocco, West Africa, and Asia-Pacific. [5] [6] [7]

The Commission on the Status of Women is a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of the main UN organs within the United Nations. CSW has been described as the UN organ promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women. Every year, representatives of Member States gather at United Nations Headquarters in New York to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and advancement of women worldwide. In April 2017, ECOSOC elected 13 new members to CSW for a four-year term 2018–2022. One of the new members is Saudi Arabia, which has been criticised for its treatment of women.

The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) is a regional organization of liberal and democratic political parties in Asia.

Violence against women (VAW), also known as gender-based violence and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) are violent acts primarily or exclusively committed against women and girls. Often considered a form of hate crime, this type of violence is gender-based, meaning that the acts of violence are committed against women and girls expressly because they are female. The UN Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women states, "violence against women is a manifestation of historically unequal power relations between men and women" and "violence against women is one of the crucial social mechanisms by which women are forced into a subordinate position compared with men."

History

INLW was founded in 1990 at the Congress of Liberal International (LI) in Helsinki by a group of women representing Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Leadership

At the General Meeting in Dakar, Senegal, on November 28, 2018, the following leaders were elected: Jayanthi Devi Balaguru of Malaysia, President; [9] Khadija El Morabit of Morocco, Deputy President; [10] Lysbeth van Valkenburg, Treasurer; and several regional vice presidents including Sal Brinton (Europe), Maysing Yang (Asia), Loubna Amhair (MENA), Awa Gueye Kebe (Africa), and Patricia Olamendi (Latin America). Leticia Gutíerrez and Ruth Richardson were appointed to the board. The group also created a Consultative Committee with members from Spain, the Netherlands, South Africa, and the Ivory Coast. [11]

Sarah Virginia Brinton, Baroness Brinton, known as Sal Brinton, is the President of the UK Liberal Democrats. In November 2010 she was nominated to the House of Lords, taking her place on 10 February 2011 as Baroness Brinton, of Kenardington in the County of Kent.

MENA is an English-language acronym referring to the Middle East and North Africa region. An alternative for the same group of countries is WANA. The term covers an extensive region stretching from Morocco to Iran, including all Mashriq and Maghreb countries. This toponym is roughly synonymous with the term the Greater Middle East.

INLW patrons include Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck, former president of Liberation International; Beatrice Rangoni Machiavelli of the Italian Liberal Party; Lorna Marsden, Canadian politician and academic; Annette Lu, former vice president of Taiwan; Kandia Camara, Minister of Education for the Ivory Coast; and Hakima El Haité, former INLW vice president and environmental minister of Morocco. Anne-Marie Cécile J. Neyts-Uyttebroeck is a Belgian politician and was a Member of the European Parliament for Flanders with the Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats, member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, where she sat on the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Beatrice Rangoni Machiavelli is an Italian politician, author, and activist. She was President of the Economic and Social Committee of the European Union from 1998 to 2000.

The Centrist Democrat International is a Christian democratic political international. Until 2001, it was known as the Christian Democrat International (CDI) and before 1999 as the Christian Democrat and People's Parties International. It was formed in 1961 in Santiago, Chile as the Christian Democrat World Union, building on the legacy of other Christian Democrat internationals who tried to create a Christian-inspired third way alternative to the socialist internationals.
