Jozef Maria Zacharias (Jef) Valkeniers (Schepdaal, Belgium - 29 December 1932) is a physician-neuropsychiatrist and a Flemish politician.

Schepdaal is a village and deelgemeente of Dilbeek.

Belgium Federal constitutional monarchy in Western Europe

Biography

Jef Valkeniers was born in 1932 as the seventh child in a large brewer family. He grew up in Schepdaal where his grandfather Emiel Eylenbosch was mayor and brewer. [1]

Neuropsychiatrist

Doctor Valkeniers studied medicine at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He did his internship at Ellis Hospital and took some additional classes at the Albany Medical College in The State of New York. After six years having worked as a practitioner in Schepdaal he moved with his family to South Africa in order to specialize in neurology at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Four years later, he returned to Belgium and obtained a specialization in psychiatry at St. Jans Hospital in Bruges. [2]

Albany Medical College (AMC) is a medical school located in Albany, New York, United States. It was founded in 1839 by Alden March and James H. Armsby and is one of the oldest medical schools in the nation. The college is part of the Albany Medical Center, which includes the Albany Medical Center Hospital.

Politics

Dr Valkeniers was Member of Parliament from 1974 to 2003. As a Dutch-speaking member of parliament, he was also a member of the Flemish Cultural Council (forerunner of the Flemish Parliament). He was also briefly, in 1988, Minister for the Brussels Region. Finally, he was mayor of Schepdaal and Dilbeek. Dr Valkeniers was known during his years as a Member of Parliament as an active member and as a hard worker.

Dilbeek Municipality in Flemish Community, Belgium

Dilbeek is a municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant, in Flanders, one of the three regions of Belgium. The municipality comprises the villages of Dilbeek proper, Groot-Bijgaarden, Itterbeek, Schepdaal, Sint-Martens-Bodegem, and Sint-Ulriks-Kapelle. Dilbeek is located just outside the Brussels-Capital Region, in the Pajottenland, hence the local name Poort van het Pajottenland. Even though Dilbeek is located in the Dutch language area of Belgium, there is a French-speaking minority represented by 4 members on the 33-seat local council. It is a mostly residential community with largely preserved rural areas and some industrial zones.

The Chamber of Representatives is one of the two chambers in the bicameral Federal Parliament of Belgium, the other being the Senate. It is considered to be the "lower house" of the Federal Parliament.

The Senate is one of the two chambers of the bicameral Federal Parliament of Belgium, the other being the Chamber of Representatives. It is considered to be the "upper house" of the Federal Parliament. Created in 1831 as a chamber fully equal to the Chamber of Representatives, it has undergone several reforms in the past, most notably in 1993 and the reform of 2014 following the sixth Belgian state reform. The 2014 elections were the first ones without a direct election of senators. Instead, the new Senate is completely composed of members of community and regional parliaments and co-opted members. It is a chamber of the communities and regions and serves as a platform for discussion and reflection about matters between the different language communities. The Senate now only plays a very minor role in the federal legislative process. Since the reform, it only holds about ten plenary sessions a year.

Brussels Capital region of Belgium

Brussels, officially the Brussels-Capital Region, is a region of Belgium comprising 19 municipalities, including the City of Brussels, which is the capital of Belgium. The Brussels-Capital Region is located in the central portion of the country and is a part of both the French Community of Belgium and the Flemish Community, but is separate from the Flemish Region and the Walloon Region. Brussels is the most densely populated and the richest region in Belgium in terms of GDP per capita. It covers 161 km2 (62 sq mi), a relatively small area compared to the two other regions, and has a population of 1.2 million. The metropolitan area of Brussels counts over 2.1 million people, which makes it the largest in Belgium. It is also part of a large conurbation extending towards Ghent, Antwerp, Leuven and Walloon Brabant, home to over 5 million people.

Valkeniers is currently dealing with development, he serves on several boards of directors, and he is regularly asked for medical advice (E.g. NPO De Poel. [4] ). He is still active in politics as a councilor in Dilbeek. [5] and as board member of the liberal party in Belgium (Open Vlaamse Liberalen en Democraten). He continues to actively work for the fraternization between Dilbeek with some foreign counties. He was a few years ago, the initiator of the cooperation between the HUBrussel and the Dalton State College. [6]

Open VLD most recently formed the Federal Government with N-VA, CD&V and the Francophone Reformist Movement (MR).
