A pile splice joins two segments of a driven pile, using either a weld (typical for H beams), grout or mechanical means (typical for precast concrete piles). Pile splices enable the use of shorter segments, which allows for driving piles in low-headroom situations such as under bridges or inside buildings. [1] Reducing length of pile segments to under ~65 feet long also means the trailers that haul them to job sites can stay within state length limits. [2]

A deep foundation is a type of foundation that transfers building loads to the earth farther down from the surface than a shallow foundation does to a subsurface layer or a range of depths. A pile or piling is a vertical structural element of a deep foundation, driven or drilled deep into the ground at the building site.

A pile is a slender element cast in the ground or driven into it. Since pile construction as well as the final product are mostly invisible, engineers have often questioned their integrity, i.e. their compliance with project drawings and specifications. In fact, experience has shown that in piles, of all kinds flaws may occur. The purpose of integrity testing is to discover such flaws before they can cause any damage.


A tieback is a structural element installed in soil or rock to transfer applied tensile load into the ground. Typically in the form of a horizontal wire or rod, or a helical anchor, a tieback is commonly used along with other retaining systems to provide additional stability to cantilevered retaining walls. With one end of the tieback secured to the wall, the other end is anchored to a stable structure, such as a concrete deadman which has been driven into the ground or anchored into earth with sufficient resistance. The tieback-deadman structure resists forces that would otherwise cause the wall to lean, as for example, when a seawall is pushed seaward by water trapped on the landward side after a heavy rain.

The Samuel De Champlain Bridge is a twin cable-stayed bridge built to replace the original Champlain Bridge over the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec between the Island of Montreal and the South Shore suburbs. The new twin spans are located just north of the original Champlain Bridge, which both run east-west over the north-south river. The new bridge's north span carries the northbound and westbound automobile traffic of the A-10, A-15, and A-20. The south span carries the southbound and eastbound automobile traffic of the A-10, A-15 and A-20. The central span, still under construction, will carry the South Shore branch of the forthcoming Réseau express métropolitain automated light rail system. It is one of the largest infrastructure projects in North America and is one of the busiest crossings on the continent. It is built to last 125 years with the usage of stainless steel and high-performance concrete, and replaces the previous 57-year-old bridge, which has become functionally obsolete and its structure having been degraded by the repeated application of de-icing salt. At approximately 60 metres (200 ft) wide, the new Champlain Bridge is one of the widest bridges in the world.
