The Psychiatry Innovation Lab [1] is an incubator at the American Psychiatric Association that catalyzes the formation of innovative ventures to transform mental healthcare. It was founded by American psychiatrist and author Dr. Nina Vasan in 2015. [2] The Lab nurtures early-stage ideas and ventures by investing in them with mentorship, education, funding, and collaboration opportunities with a community of mental health innovators. [3]

American Psychiatric Association organization

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) is the main professional organization of psychiatrists and trainee psychiatrists in the United States, and the largest psychiatric organization in the world. Its some 37,800 members are mainly American but some are international. The association publishes various journals and pamphlets, as well as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The DSM codifies psychiatric conditions and is used worldwide as a guide for diagnosing disorders.

A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in psychiatry, the branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, study, and treatment of mental disorders. Psychiatrists are medical doctors, unlike psychologists, and must evaluate patients to determine whether their symptoms are the result of a physical illness, a combination of physical and mental ailments, or strictly psychiatric. A psychiatrist usually works as the clinical leader of the multi-disciplinary team, which may comprise psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists and nursing staff. Psychiatrists have broad training in a bio-psycho-social approach to assessment and management of mental illness.

The Lab centers around a live event at the bi-annual Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association, the largest psychiatric organization in the world. [4] This event brings together top leaders in psychiatry with experts in business, technology, medicine, and government, who collaborate with the finalists.

Format

Finalists and Semi-Finalists are invited to present their ideas live, ‘Shark Tank’-style, to a panel of judges at the American Psychiatric Association bi-annual meeting. They have the opportunity to work closely with industry experts to improve their idea. The Finalist teams give final pitches to the judges and audience, and the winners are selected. Prizes are donated by the sponsoring companies and individuals.

Shark Tank is an American business-related reality television series on ABC that premiered on August 9, 2009. The show is the American franchise of the international format Dragons' Den, which originated in Japan in 2001. It shows aspiring entrepreneurs as they make business presentations to a panel of five investors or "sharks", who then choose whether to invest in their company as business partners.

First Psychiatry Innovation Lab (Atlanta, Georgia)

The inaugural Psychiatry Innovation Lab took place on May 15, 2015 at the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. [5] NeuroLex Diagnostics [6] won the Grand Prize Award sponsored by Doctor on Demand [7] and was also selected by the audience as the winner of the Audience Choice Award. Neurolex helps to diagnose psychosis early by analyzing speech samples using artificial intelligence. [8]

The second Psychiatry Innovation Lab took place on October 7, 2016 at the American Psychiatric Association meeting in Washington, D.C. Joseph Insler won the Grand Prize award with his medical device called "Overdose Recovery Bracelet" to prevent opioid overdoses. [9] The award for Most Promising Innovation went to April Koh for Spring, [10] which uses machine learning to identify the best antidepressant for a patient. [11]

Machine learning (ML) is the scientific study of algorithms and statistical models that computer systems use to effectively perform a specific task without using explicit instructions, relying on patterns and inference instead. It is seen as a subset of artificial intelligence. Machine learning algorithms build a mathematical model based on sample data, known as "training data", in order to make predictions or decisions without being explicitly programmed to perform the task. Machine learning algorithms are used in a wide variety of applications, such as email filtering, and computer vision, where it is infeasible to develop an algorithm of specific instructions for performing the task. Machine learning is closely related to computational statistics, which focuses on making predictions using computers. The study of mathematical optimization delivers methods, theory and application domains to the field of machine learning. Data mining is a field of study within machine learning, and focuses on exploratory data analysis through unsupervised learning. In its application across business problems, machine learning is also referred to as predictive analytics.

Third Psychiatry Innovation Lab (San Diego, California)

The third Psychiatry Innovation Lab will take place on May 21, 2017 at the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting in San Diego, California, with a record-high prize purse. Multiple prizes will be awarded, including the Accelerator Prize. To embrace the growing and fast-moving role that technology is playing in mental health care, the American Psychiatric Association will debut the Mental Health Innovation Zone that was designed by Nina Taylor, Deputy Director of Education for the American Psychiatric Association. [12] The Psychiatry Innovation Lab will be the centerpiece of the Innovation Zone.

Muhamad Aly Rifai is a Syrian American internist and psychiatrist and a clinician researcher known for describing the association between psychiatric disorders and hepatitis C. He co-authored a clinical report detailing the association between hepatitis C infection and psychiatric disorders. Basaglia Law

Basaglia Law or Law 180 is the Italian Mental Health Act of 1978 which signified a large reform of the psychiatric system in Italy, contained directives for the closing down of all psychiatric hospitals and led to their gradual replacement with a whole range of community-based services, including settings for acute in-patient care. The Basaglia Law is the basis of Italian mental health legislation. The principal proponent of Law 180 and its architect was Italian psychiatrist Franco Basaglia. Therefore, Law 180 is known as the “Basaglia Law” from the name of its promoter. The Parliament of Italy approved the Law 180 on May 13, 1978, and thereby initiated the gradual dismantling of psychiatric hospitals. Implementation of the psychiatric reform law was accomplished in 1998 which marked the very end of the state psychiatric hospital system in Italy. The Law has had worldwide impact as other counties took up widely the Italian model. It was Democratic Psychiatry which was essential in the birth of the reform law of 1978.

Goldwater rule rule barring psychiatrists from giving professional opinions on the mental health of public figures without in-person examination and consent

The Goldwater rule is the informal name given to section 7 in the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Principles of Medical Ethics, which states that it is unethical for psychiatrists to give a professional opinion about public figures whom they have not examined in person, and from whom they have not obtained consent to discuss their mental health in public statements. It is named after former US Senator and 1964 presidential candidate Barry Goldwater.

She is a Resident Physician in Psychiatry at Stanford Hospital and Clinics and in the MBA program at Stanford Graduate School of Business. She currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area and has advised companies and startups including McKinsey & Co and Lyra Health.

Nada Logan Stotland is an American psychiatrist and the 135th president of the American Psychiatric Association.

<i>College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists</i>

The College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP) is a professional organization representing pharmacists and other healthcare professionals in the specialty areas of psychiatric and neurologic pharmacy practice within the United States. It is the only such organization representing the interests of neuropsychiatric pharmacists in the United States. In an effort to help connect patients with psychiatric pharmacists, CPNP maintains "The Mental Health Pharmacy Directory," an online search engine that includes more than 850 mental health pharmacies. As of December 2015, CPNP is a member of the Coalition on Psychiatric Emergencies (COPE) and is the only professional pharmacy organization represented on the coalition. In January 2017, CPNP was elected to membership status on the Joint Commission of Pharmacy Practitioners (JCPP). Ramdas Ransing is an Indian psychiatrist and researcher best known for his work in Neuropsychiatry. He is a co-founder of the Pasay Foundation, an NGO dedicated to research in the fields of deaddiction and psychiatric work.

Myrna Milgram Weissman is Diane Goldman Kemper Family Professor of Epidemiology in Psychiatry at the College of Physicians and Surgeons and Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. She is an epidemiologist known for her research on the prevalence of psychological disorders and psychiatric epidemiology, as it pertains to rates and risks of anxiety and mood disorders across generations. Among her many influential works are longitudinal studies of the impact of parental depression on their children.

Patrice Harris is an American psychiatrist and the first African-American woman to be elected President of the American Medical Association.

Ganesan Venkatasubramanian is an Indian psychiatrist and clinician-scientist who works as a professor of psychiatry at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore (NIMHANS). Venkatasubramanian is known for his studies in the fields of schizophrenia, transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), brain imaging, neuroimmunology, neurometabolism and several other areas of biological psychiatry. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to medical sciences in 2018.
