Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, also spelled Nyussi, is a Mozambican politician serving as the fourth President of Mozambique, in office since 2015. He previously served as Minister of Defence from 2008 to 2014. Nyusi was the candidate of the ruling party, Frelimo, in the 2014 presidential election.
Carlos Agostinho do Rosário is a Mozambican politician who has been Prime Minister of Mozambique since 17 January 2015. He is a member of the FRELIMO and serves under President Filipe Nyusi. He worked as a civil servant in the 1970s and was Governor of Zambezia Province between 1987 and 1994. Later he served a short while as MP in 1994 before becoming Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, in which post he served until 1999. Afterwards he became a diplomat in Asia; his last position before his appointment as Prime Minister was as Ambassador to Indonesia.
Cabo Delgado is the northernmost province of Mozambique. It has an area of 82,625 km² and a population of 2,333,278 (2017). As well as bordering the neighboring country of Tanzania, it borders the provinces of Nampula and Niassa. The region is an ethnic stronghold of the Makonde tribe. Afonso Marceta Macacho Dhlakama was a Mozambican politician and the leader of RENAMO, an anti-communist guerrilla movement that fought the FRELIMO government in the Mozambican Civil War before signing a peace agreement and becoming an opposition political party in the early 1990s. The Rome General Peace Accords (Português): Acordo Geral de Paz ) between the Mozambican Civil War parties, the FRELIMO (government) and the RENAMO (rebels), put an end to the Mozambique Civil War. It was signed on October 4, 1992. Negotiations preceding in began in July 1990. They were brokered by a team of four mediators, two members of the Community of Sant'Egidio, Andrea Riccardi and Matteo Zuppi, as well as Bishop Jaime Gonçalves and Italian government representative Mario Raffaelli. The delegation of the Frelimo was headed by Armando Guebuza, the delegation of the Renamo was headed by Raul Domingos. The accords were then signed by the then president of Mozambique, Frelimo leader Joaquim Chissano and by the leader of the Renamo, Afonso Dhlakama.

Raul Domingos is a Mozambican politician who was part of RENAMO until being thrown out on 7 July 2000. At the time, he had been considered the most likely successor to party leader Afonso Dhlakama. From 1994 to 1999, Domingos was head of the Renamo parliamentary group. In the 2004 Mozambican presidential elections Domingos ran for the Party for Peace, Democracy, and Development, gaining 2.7% of the popular vote.
General elections to elect the president, Assembly of the Republic, and Provincial Assemblies was held in Mozambique on 28 October 2009. Incumbent President Armando Guebuza ran for re-election as the FRELIMO candidate; he was challenged by opposition leader Afonso Dhlakama, who had stood as the RENAMO candidate in every presidential election since 1994. Also standing were Daviz Simango, the Mayor of Beira, who was a RENAMO member before founding his own party, the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), earlier in 2009.

The concurrent RENAMO insurgency is an ongoing guerrilla campaign by militants of the RENAMO party in Mozambique. The insurgency is widely considered to be an aftershock of the Mozambican Civil War; it resulted in renewed tensions between RENAMO and Mozambique's ruling FRELIMO coalition over charges of state corruption and the disputed results of 2014 general elections.
Ivone Soares is a Mozambican politician. She is the deputy leader of Mozambican National Resistance and leads its parliamentary party in the Assembly of the Republic. Soares is also a member of the Pan-African Parliament where she is vice-president of youth. She was the target of an attempted assassination in September 2016.
