American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons

The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) is the non-profit professional association serving the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery, the surgical arm of dentistry. Its headquarters are in Rosemont, Illinois.^[1]

Oral and maxillofacial surgery specializes in surgery of the face, mouth, and jaws. It is an internationally recognized surgical specialty. OMFS is a specialty of dentistry in North America, Central America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Asia, and Scandinavia. After a full degree in dentistry, the dental specialty residency of oral and maxillofacial surgery may or may not include a full degree in medicine. In countries such as the UK and most of Europe, it is recognized as a specialty of medicine and a degree in medicine or both degrees in dentistry and medicine are compulsory.

Dentistry, also known as Dental and Oral Medicine, is a branch of medicine that consists of the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity, commonly in the dentition but also the oral mucosa, and of adjacent and related structures and tissues, particularly in the maxillofacial area. Although primarily associated with teeth among the general public, the field of dentistry or dental medicine is not limited to teeth but includes other aspects of the craniofacial complex including the temporomandibular joint and other supporting, muscular, lymphatic, nervous, vascular, and anatomical structures.

Rosemont is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. Located immediately northwest of Chicago, as of the 2010 census it had a population of 4,202. The village was incorporated in 1956, though it had been settled long before that. While Rosemont's land area and population are relatively small among municipalities in the Chicago Metropolitan Area, the village is a major center for commercial activity in the region and is a key component of the Golden Corridor.

History

This organization was founded in 1918 by 29 dentists who specialized in extracting teeth. In 1919, the organization was initially named American Society of Exodontists and was formally recognized by American Dental Association. In 1921, the organization changed its name from American Society of Exodontists to the American Society of Oral Surgeons and Exodontists. During World War I, US did not have Dental Corps yet because of which lot of dentists volunteered for surgery with their medical colleagues. Lot of oral surgeons in the earlier part of 20th century had their medical degrees which allowed them to work with facial trauma in the World War I. Some of the early dentists who progressed the speciality in many different ways were Varaztad Kazanjian, Robert H. Ivy, Carl W. Waldron. Simon Hullihen and James Garretson are also known for their significant contributions to the field of oral surgery.

Varaztad H. Kazanjian was an Armenian American oral surgeon who pioneered techniques for plastic surgery and is considered to be the founder of the modern practice of plastic surgery. He graduated from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1905. He served as professor of oral surgery from 1922–1939 and he was the first to hold the title of Professor of plastic surgery at Harvard Medical School. He also co-authored the first concise book on plastic surgery.

Robert H. Ivy (1881–1974) was an American plastic surgeon who is known to develop the team approach or multidisciplinary treatment involving care of children with Cleft lip and cleft palate. He is one of the early pioneers in the specialty of plastic surgery due to his surgical experience in World War I. During an intermaxillary fixation technique, Ivy Loop or Eyelet Wiringis named after Dr. Ivy.

Simon Hullihen MD, DDS was a dental surgeon born in Point Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He completed his medical degree and then was inspired to seek a career in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Regarded as the first oral surgeon in the United States, he helped to develop many modern techniques of maxillofacial surgery and contributed to the establishment of oral and maxillofacial surgery as a surgical specialty.

AAOMS created the Board of the American Society of Oral Surgeons in 1946. The name of this board was then changed to American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) in 1978. The speciality then changed its name to American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) from American Society of Oral Surgeons and Exodontists in 1978.

AAOMS also played a key role in creating the first American edition of Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1943. AAOMS created this journal with help of ADA. The journal was first called Journal of Oral Surgery. This journal was purchased by AAOMS from ADA IN 1981 to gain more control. Another journal called Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology also has been publishing articles related to oral surgery since 1948.

The Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a peer-reviewed medical journal that publishes original research in oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral pathology, and other related topics. It is published monthly by Elsevier on behalf of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. The current editor-in-chief is James R. Hupp, DMD, MD, JD, MBA, and associate editor is Thomas Dodson, DMD, MPH.

Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology is a monthly peer-reviewed medical journal that covers research in oral surgery, medicine, pathology, radiology, and endodontics published by Mosby. It was previously published as Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology, and Endodonthics and before that, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, and Oral Pathology. It is an official journal of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, American Academy of Oral Medicine, and the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2012 impact factor of 1.495.

AAOMS currently has an affiliation base of more than 9,000 fellows, members and residents in the United States, as well as 250 affiliate members from nations around the world. More than 90 percent of oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the United States belong to AAOMS. In addition to its membership, AAOMS has state component societies in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and eight regional component societies.

AAOMS publishes the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and conducts the Daniel M. Laskin Award for an Outstanding Predoctoral Educator.

Daniel M. Laskin is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and educator who has contributed to his field for over fifty years. He has excelled as an educator, a researcher and a clinician. He has served as AAOMS president, as well as the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and still serves as the editor of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has been a major contributor to the dental literature with over 900 contributions to the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has co-authored 16 textbooks and monographs.

In addition to the DMD degree, HSDM offers specialty training programs, advanced training programs, a Ph.D. program through the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and Master of Medical Sciences & Doctor of Medical Sciences degrees through Harvard Medical School. Being highly selective, admission into the pre-doctoral DMD program, as well as into the post-doctoral residency programs, is fiercely competitive. Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry is the dental school of Virginia Commonwealth University. Located in the United States city of Richmond. The school opened in 1893. It is the only dental school in Virginia and is one of five schools within the VCU Medical Center.

In the United States and Canada, there are ten recognized dental specialties in which some dentists choose to train and practice, in addition to or instead of general dentistry. In the United Kingdom and Australia, there are thirteen.

The British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons is the British medical association for oral and maxillofacial surgeons - dentists who are also trained in oral surgery.
