Final

With only seven crews entered, a final was held on August 11. This was the first time that less than nine competitors competed in a final at the Summer Olympics since the men's C-2 1000 m event at Melbourne in 1956. As of the 2020 Summer Olympics, it is the only canoeing event since 1956 that did not have eight or nine competitors or crews in the final.

Fanny Fischer is a German canoe sprinter who has been competing since 1996 and on the senior circuit since 2006. She won a gold in the women's K-4 500 m event at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and finished fourth in the K-2 500 m event at those same games.

The women's K-1 500 metres was a competition in canoeing at the 1956 Summer Olympics. The K-1 event is raced by single-person canoe sprint kayaks. Heat and finals took place on December 1.

This would be the only time this event was held in the Summer Olympics though it was part of the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships from 1948 to 1975.

This event debuted at these Olympics though it is one of two events that has been at every ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships (the other is the men's K-4 1000 m event which debuted at the 1964 Games in Tokyo and ran until the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
