Research & Activities
LIP6’s activities focus on the modeling and resolution of fundamental computer science problems driven by their applications, as well as the implementation and validation of solutions through academic and industrial partnerships.
Research is carried by 18 teams spread across 4 main research axes:
- Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (AID)
- Architecture, Systems and Network (ASN)
- Safety, Security and Reliability (SSR)
- Theory and Mathematics for Computing (TMC)
LIP6’s scientific production represents more than 500 publications per year, with around 50 theses being defended yearly. Research conducted at LIP6 also led to 84 patents and numerous software.
International cooperation is essential for LIP6. The unit maintains strong ties with universities in Brazil, Japan, China, the United States, and many European countries. In addition to academic research, LIP6 also has a long history of cooperation with industrial partners through the framework of national, European or international projects.
LIP6 currently hosts three European Research Council (ERC) projects:
- Quantum Superiority with Coherent State (QUSCO)
- Modular Open Platform for Static Analysis (MOPSA)
- Topological Reduction of Scientific 3D Data (TORI)
LIP6 is very active within Sorbonne University and fosters transdisciplinary collaborations between multiple Sorbonne-based research units. Most notably, the lab is strongly involved in Sorbonne Center for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI) and the Quantum Information Center Sorbonne (QICS), the latter being hosted within LIP6’s offices.
École des Ponts ParisTech is a grande école in the field of science, engineering and technology. Founded in 1747 by Daniel-Charles Trudaine, it is one of the oldest and one of the most prestigious French grandes écoles.
The 5th arrondissement of Paris is one of the 20 arrondissements of the capital city of France. In spoken French, this arrondissement is referred to as le cinquième.
Sorbonne University is a public research university located in Paris, France. The institution's legacy reaches back to the Middle Ages in 1257 when Sorbonne College was established by Robert de Sorbon as one of the first universities in Europe.
The École normale supérieure de Lyon is a French grande école located in the city of Lyon. It is one of the four prestigious écoles normales supérieures in France. The school is composed of two academic units —Arts and Sciences— with campuses in Lyon, near the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers.
The name Sorbonne is commonly used to refer to the historic University of Paris in Paris, France or one of its successor institutions. It is also the name of a building in the Latin Quarter of Paris which from 1253 onwards housed the College of Sorbonne, part of one of the first universities in the Western world, later renamed University of Paris and commonly known as "the Sorbonne".
Pierre and Marie Curie University, also known as Paris VI, was a public research university in Paris, France, from 1971 to 2017. The university was located on the Jussieu Campus in the Latin Quarter of the 5th arrondissement of Paris, France. UPMC merged with Paris-Sorbonne University into a new combined Sorbonne University.
The European Gravitational Observatory (EGO) is a consortium established to manage the Virgo interferometric antenna and its related infrastructure, as well as to promote cooperation in the field of gravitational wave research in Europe. It was founded December 11, 2000, by the French CNRS and Italian INFN, and is headquartered near Pisa, in the commune of Cascina.
University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines is a French public university created in 1991, located in the department of Yvelines and, since 2002, in Hauts-de-Seine. It is a constituent university of the federal Paris-Saclay University.
Paris Sciences et Lettres University is a public research university based in Paris, France. It was established in 2010 and formally created as a university in 2019. It is a collegiate university with 11 constituent schools, with the oldest founded in 1530. PSL is located in central Paris, with its main sites in the Latin Quarter, at the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève campus, at the Jourdan campus, at Porte Dauphine, and at Carré Richelieu.
The Naval Academy Research Institute (IRENav) is a multidisciplinary research and scientific training center under the institutional umbrella of the École navale and the École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers. Created in 2000, IRENav is labeled (EA3634) within the framework of the laboratories of the École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers and evaluated by the HCERES. It is also a member of the Institut Carnot Arts, a major research network that drives industrial innovation at the national level.
The Laboratory of design, manufacturing and control, also known as the LCFC, is a French laboratory of research located in Metz. It is under the authority of Arts et Métiers ParisTech. It is part of the Carnot Institute ARTS and currently employs more than 30 persons. It was created in 2009 from the division of the LGIPM, a laboratory specialized in industrial design and manufacturing. It is also part of the doctoral school 432 of Arts et Métiers ParisTech.
Alain Bui is a French academic who's specialized in information technology, and the current president of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines University.
In France, open access to scholarly communication is relatively robust and has strong public support. Revues.org, a digital platform for social science and humanities publications, launched in 1999. Hyper Articles en Ligne (HAL) began in 2001. The French National Center for Scientific Research participated in 2003 in the creation of the influential Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities. Publishers EDP Sciences and OpenEdition belong to the international Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association.
The Mathematics Institute of Jussieu–Paris Rive Gauche is a French research institute in fundamental mathematics. It is a "mixed research unit", with three parent organizations: the Centre national de la recherche scientifique, Sorbonne University, and the University of Paris. It is located in Paris, split between two campuses: Jussieu and Paris Rive Gauche.
Denis Jerome is a French experimental physicist in the field of condensed matter, who contributed to the discovery of superconductivity in organic conductive matter.
Chems-Eddine Chitour is an Algerian scholar, researcher and author. He took office as Minister of Energy Transition and Renewable Energies on June 24, 2020. He previously served as minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research from January the 4th to June 24, 2020 in Algeria.
Robert Chabbal was a French physician and scientific researcher. He was Director General of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) from 1976 to 1979.
Jean-Pierre Vallat was a French historian and archeologist. A member of the French School of Rome, he was a professor emeritus of Roman history at Paris Diderot University.
Abdellatif Miraoui is the Moroccan Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation. He was appointed as minister on 7 October 2021.
Isabelle Bloch is a French computer scientist working in artificial intelligence, image understanding, explainable artificial intelligence, and spatial reasoning. She is a professor in LIP6, the computer science laboratory of Sorbonne University, where she holds the Artificial Intelligence Chair.
