The Maine Black Bears men's basketball team is the basketball team that represents University of Maine in Orono, Maine, United States. The school's team currently competes in the America East Conference, which they joined upon its founding in 1979. Their current head coach is Chris Markwood, who took over in March 2022. [3]

Contents

The Black Bears are one of 35 eligible Division I programs to have never appeared in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament; their 78 seasons without a postseason bid is sixth most all-time among the teams in the drought. [4]

Besides Tennessee, Barnes is also known for coaching the Texas Longhorns from 1998 to 2015, taking the team to the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament in 16 of his 17 seasons -- including 14 straight from 1999 to 2012 -- as well as a Final Four appearance in 2003. The 1982–83 Maine Black Bears men's basketball team represented University of Maine in the 1982–83 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Black Bears, led by twelfth-year head coach Skip Chappelle, played their home games at Memorial Gymnasium and were members of the America East Conference. Jeff Cross was named the conference player of the year. The Black Bears finished the regular season with a record of 12–14, 6–4 in their conference.

The 2021–22 Maine Black Bears men's basketball team represented the University of Maine in the 2021–22 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. They played their home games at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine and were led by fourth-year head coach Richard Barron until his resignation on February 17, 2022. Assistant coach Jai Steadman was named the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. They were members of the America East Conference. They finished the season 6–23, 3–15 in America East play to finish in last place. They failed to qualify for the America East Tournament.

The Black Bears, led by first-year head coach Chris Markwood, played their home games at Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine, with some games at Memorial Gymnasium in Orono, Maine, as members of the America East Conference. They finished the season 13-17, 7-9 in America East Play to finish in 7th place. They lost in the quarterfinals of the America East Tournament to UMass Lowell.
