The Malayan People's Liberation Front was an organisation in Malaysia, linked to the Communist Party of Malaya - Revolutionary Faction. [1] [2] In 1974 MPLF mobile units killed Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Hashim. [3] [4] The MPLF also killed CPO Perak Khoo Chong Kong, conducted bank robberies, destroyed government installations and raided the Bernang Police Station in South Selangor and seized firearms. [4]

The 13 May 1969 incident was the Sino-Malay sectarian violence that took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on that date in 1969. The riot occurred in the aftermath of the 1969 Malaysian general election when opposition parties made gains at the expense of the ruling coalition, the Alliance Party. Official reports put the number of deaths due to the riots at 196, although Western diplomatic sources at the time suggested a toll of close to 600, with most of the victims Chinese. The racial riots led to a declaration of a state of national emergency or Darurat by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong resulting in the suspension of the Parliament by the Malaysian government, while the National Operations Council (NOC), also known as the Majlis Gerakan Negara (MAGERAN), was established as a caretaker government to temporarily govern the country between 1969 and 1971.

The Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia is a liberal political party in Malaysia. Following the 1969 general election, Gerakan won the majority of seats in the state legislature of Penang, defeating the Alliance Party which was the then ruling national coalition. GERAKAN joined the Alliance Party, which later became Barisan Nasional coalition Party (BN) in 1972. Following the fall of Barisan Nasional in the 2018 general election, GERAKAN Party left the coalition on 23 June 2018. On 11 February 2021, the party officially joined the ruling Perikatan Nasional coalition Party (PN).

In his term as the Minister of Finance, a new Malaysian currency, Malaysian Ringgit was introduced. He is the longest-serving Minister of Finance by serving in the position for 15 years.

Operation Lalang

Operation Lalang is a major crackdown carried out beginning 27 October 1987 by the Royal Malaysian Police, ostensibly to prevent the occurrence of racial riots in Malaysia. The operation saw the arrest of 106 to 119 people – NGO activists, opposition politicians, intellectuals, students, artists, scientists and others – who were detained without trial under the Internal Security Act (ISA). It was the second largest ISA swoop in Malaysian history since the 13 May riots. It also involved the revoking of the publishing licenses of two dailies, The Star and the Sin Chew Jit Poh and two weeklies, The Sunday Star and Watan.

Tan Chee Khoon Malaysian politician (1919–1996)

Tan Sri Tan Chee Khoon was a major figure in Malaysian politics from 1959 to 1978, at one point being nicknamed "Mr. Opposition" for the outspoken views he presented in Parliament. He was the official Leader of the Opposition in Parliament from 1964 to 1969. Although he was originally a leader of the Labour Party of Malaya and the Socialist Front coalition which Labour had joined, Tan later co-founded Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan), and also Parti Keadilan Masyarakat Malaysia (Pekemas) after he became disillusioned with Gerakan.

The 2007 HINDRAF rally was a rally held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 25 November 2007. The rally organiser, the Hindu Rights Action Force, had called the protest over alleged discriminatory policies which favour ethnic Malays. The rally was the second such street protest after the 2007 Bersih rally in Kuala Lumpur on 10 November 2007. The rally started when a crowd estimated to be between 5,000 and 30,000 people gathered outside the Petronas Twin Towers at midnight, early Sunday morning.
