The total land area is 1,192.369 km2 and their total population as of the 2000 census was 953 persons, almost entirely in the city of Sand Point, on Popof Island.
The Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument is a group of unorganized, mostly unincorporated United States Pacific Island territories managed by the Fish and Wildlife Service of the United States Department of the Interior and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States Department of Commerce. These remote refuges are "the most widespread collection of marine- and terrestrial-life protected areas on the planet under a single country's jurisdiction". They protect many endemic species including corals, fish, shellfish, marine mammals, seabirds, water birds, land birds, insects, and vegetation not found elsewhere.
Popof Island is an island in the Shumagin Islands south of mainland Alaska. The largest community in the area, Sand Point, is located on the northwest coast. Popof Island is 10 miles (16 km) long, 5 miles (8 km) wide and the peak elevation is 1,550 feet. It is located at 55°18′49″N160°22′29″W. It has a land area of 93.651 km² and a total population of 952 persons at the 2000 census.
Unga Island is the largest of the Shumagin Islands off the Alaska Peninsula in southwestern Alaska, United States. The island has a land area of 170.73 sq mi (442.188 km²), making it the 36th largest island in the United States. As of the 2000 census, it had a permanent population of one.

Korovin island has a land area of 67.85 km² and is uninhabited by humans.

It lies east of Popof Island, southeast of Korovin Island, and northwest of Nagai Island. The island has a land area of 14.661 km² and is uninhabited.

The Labouchere was a paddle steamer in the service of the Hudson's Bay Company, built in 1858 at Green's in Blackwall, London, England. Under the command of Captain J. The Aleutian subduction zone is a ~2500 mile-long convergence boundary between the North American Plate and the Pacific Plate, that extends from the Alaska Range to the Kamchatka Peninsula. Here, the Pacific Plate is being subducted underneath the North American plate and the rate of subduction changes from west to east from 7.5 cm/yr to 5.1 cm/yr. The Aleutian subduction zone includes two prominent features, the Aleutian arc and the Aleutian trench. The island arc was created via volcanic eruptions from dehydration of the subducting slab at ~100 km depth. The trench is a narrow and deep morphology that occurs between the two converging plates as the subucting slab dives beneath the overriding plate.
The October 2020 Simeonof earthquake was a magnitude 7.6 earthquake that struck 97 km south southeast from the city of Sand Point, Alaska. It came almost three months after a magnitude 7.8 struck the same region. This earthquake is considered an aftershock of the July event. No damage was reported immediately following the earthquake.
