The Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy is a law enforcement training facility located in Ashburn, Virginia. It serves 17 agencies in Virginia and Washington, D.C., and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). [1] It offers training for entry-level police officers, sheriff's deputies, and 9-1-1 dispatchers; as well as advanced training for veteran officers in subjects such as identity theft investigations, leadership, and hostage negotiation.

Police Law enforcement body

The police are a constituted body of persons empowered by a state to enforce the law, to protect the lives, liberty and possessions of citizens, and to prevent crime and civil disorder. Their lawful powers include arrest and the legitimized use of force. The term is most commonly associated with the police forces of a sovereign state that are authorized to exercise the police power of that state within a defined legal or territorial area of responsibility. Police forces are often defined as being separate from the military and other organizations involved in the defense of the state against foreign aggressors; however, gendarmerie are military units charged with civil policing. Police forces are usually public sector services, funded through taxes.

Ashburn is a census-designated place (CDP) in Loudoun County, Virginia. As of the 2010 United States Census, its population was 43,511. It is 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Washington, D.C. and part of the Washington metropolitan area.

History

The Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy was established in 1965 as the Northern Virginia Police Academy. [2] In 1971 the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services certified the Northern Virginia Police Academy as an approved Training School. The name of the academy was changed to its current name in 1977. In 1993 the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy moved from Arlington, Virginia to its present location in Ashburn. The academy was certified by the CALEA in 1995, and re-certified in 1998 and 2001. It was accredited by the CALEA in 2004, and re-accredited in 2007 and 2010. [3] The current executive director is William C. O'Toole.

Staff

The academy staff consists of 17 permanent, non-sworn employees and 18 sworn employees and one non-sworn employee from its member agencies. [4]

Alexandria Police Department

The Alexandria Police Department (APD) is the primary law enforcement agency servicing 155,810 people within 15.4 square miles (40 km2) of jurisdiction within Alexandria, Virginia. The APD has been internationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) since 1986, and was re-accredited in 1991, 1996, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016. The APD has 315 sworn officers and 152 civilian employees. New officers are trained at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy.

Virginia Tech Police Department

The Virginia Tech Police Department (VTPD) is a nationally accredited police department with jurisdiction over Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The departments original accreditation with CALEA was awarded on November 18, 1995 and the department has continued with re-accreditation. In November 2015, the department met "gold standard" and also won CALEA's "Accreditation with Excellence" award.

St. Louis County Police Department

The St. Louis County Police Department (SLCPD) is the primary and largest law enforcement agency serving St. Louis County in the U.S. state of Missouri. The current Chief of Police is Colonel Jon Belmar. According to the Charter of St. Louis County, the county police chief has all of the criminal law enforcement duties of the sheriff of St. Louis County, except for the operation of the St. Louis County Jail, which is handled by the St. Louis County Department of Justice Services (civilian), court bailiff and service of civil process. Court bailiff/civil process duties are provided by a court-appointed sheriff and his employees, none of whom have law enforcement powers.

City of Charleston Police Department

The City of Charleston Police Department (CPD) is the official police force of Charleston, South Carolina. It is South Carolina's largest police department, besides the state police, in terms of manpower, with 458 sworn officers, 137 civilians and numerous reserve officers and non-sworn volunteers. In July, 2011, the department was re-accredited through 2014 with the Accreditation with Excellence Award by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Replacing the former "Flagship Award," the Accreditation with Excellence Award is the highest single-period accreditation award available. The department also received the Meritorious Accreditation Award in 2011, representing at least 15 continuous years of CALEA accreditation.

Prince William County Sheriffs Office

The Prince William County, Virginia Sheriff's Office was established in 1731 to provide law enforcement and jailers for the County. In 1970, the Board of County Supervisors established the Prince William County Police Department which assumed the primary responsibility for law enforcement. In 1982, the Prince William County Adult Detention Center opened and assumed the duties of jailers. The Sheriff is a constitutional office elected by the Prince William County, City of Manassas and City of Manassas Park to provide certain public safety services.

Hillsboro Police Department (Oregon)

The Hillsboro Police Department (HPD) is the municipal law enforcement agency of the city of Hillsboro, Oregon, United States. It is a regionally accredited agency with 127 sworn officers on the force. As of June 2016, the chief is Lee Dobrowolski in a city of over 90,000 residents west of Portland, Oregon, in Washington County. With 169 employees as of 2014, the department is the second largest police force in the county and seventh largest in Oregon.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is a state-wide investigative law enforcement agency within the state of Florida. The department formally coordinates eight boards, councils, and commissions. FDLE's duties, responsibilities and procedures are mandated through Chapter 943, Florida Statutes, and Chapter 11, Florida Administrative Code. FDLE is headed by a commissioner who reports to Florida Cabinet which is composed of the Governor, the Attorney General, the Chief Financial Officer and the Commissioner of Agriculture. The Commissioner is appointed to his position by the Governor and Cabinet and confirmed by the Florida Senate.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office (LPSO) is the sheriff's department in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana. The department, headed by Sheriff Mark T. Garber, consists of around 750 sworn and non-sworn employees. Although the LPSO's jurisdiction consists of the entire parish of Lafayette, in order to not duplicate services provided by local city police, the primary patrol area is the unincorporated areas of the parish. The LPSO is CALEA accredited.

The Lafayette Police Department is the principal law enforcement agency in Lafayette, Louisiana, with the exception of the campus of University of Louisiana, which falls under the responsibility of the UL Police.

Manassas City Police Department

The Manassas City Police Department (MCPD) is the primary law enforcement agency servicing 37,821 people living in City of Manassas, VA. Located at 9518 Fairview Avenue, the Manassas City Police Department serves a jurisdiction of approximately 10.0 square miles (26 km2). In 2008, the department employed 90 sworn police officers, 12 unsworn police officers. On July 9, 2014, Manassas City Police Department became newsworthy after a local teenager sent explicit photos of herself to her then boyfriend who in return sent explicit video of himself to the teen. When the female teenager's mother complained, the MCPD officials chose to create some of their own child-porn in order to investigate a case of "child porn". MCPD held a warrant to chemically induce an erection in the boy and photograph the boy's penis purportedly to compare/measure it with help from a special "Homeland Security software" according to MCPD Detective David E. Abbott.

Arlington County Sheriffs Office

The Arlington County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) provides law enforcement services for 207,627 people within 26 square miles (67 km2) of jurisdiction within Arlington County, VA. These services include responsibility for the operation of the local jail, courthouse security and service of civil papers. The Sheriff may also execute criminal warrants.

Virginia Police Canine Association organization

The Virginia Police Canine Association (VPCA) is a professional law enforcement association that trains and supports police canines and handlers for member law enforcement agencies. Police canine teams can be certified in narcotics detection, explosives detection, cadaver detection, search and rescue, wildlife detection, and Patrol/Utility. Patrol/Utility canine teams are certified in criminal apprehension, tracking, article recovery, building and area searches, and crowd control. Member agencies consist of Police Departments and Sheriff's Offices all across northern and central Virginia.
