Ricardo Graziano

Ricardo Graziano (born in 1986) [1] is a Brazilian ballet dancer and choreographer. After five years with the Tulsa Ballet, he joined Florida's Sarasota Ballet in 2010 where he is a principal dancer and choreographer. [2]

Early life

Born in Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil, he showed an early interest in dance, following his sister to her jazz classes from the age of eight. [1] His mother then sent him to the Marcela Campos Escola de Bailados until he was 16. [2] He completed his training at the Academy of Dance in Mannheim, Germany, where he spent two years. [1]

Career

Graziano began his professional career in 2003 with the Tulsa Ballet in Oklahoma where he spent five years, becoming a demi-soloist. He performed roles in Jewels , The Sleeping Beauty , Romeo and Juliet as well as in a variety of contemporary works. [2]

Jewels is a three-act ballet created for the New York City Ballet by co-founder and founding choreographer George Balanchine. It premièred on Thursday, 13 April 1967 at the New York State Theater, with sets designed by Peter Harvey and lighting by Ronald Bates.

The Sleeping Beauty is a ballet in a prologue and three acts, first performed in 1890. The music was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The score was completed in 1889, and is the second of his three ballets. The original scenario was conceived by Ivan Vsevolozhsky, and is based on Charles Perrault's La Belle au bois dormant. The choreographer of the original production was Marius Petipa.

In 2010, he joined Sarasota Ballet where he was quickly promoted to a principal dancer. There he has performed in Christopher Wheeldon's The American , George Balanchine's Divertimento No. 15 and The Prodigal Son , and Frederick Ashton's Les Rendezvous . [2]

George Balanchine Georgian choreographer, dancer and ballet master

George Balanchine was one of the most influential 20th century choreographers. Styled as the father of American ballet, he co-founded the New York City Ballet and remained its Artistic Director for more than 35 years.

The Prodigal Son, or Le Fils prodigue, Op. 46 is a ballet created for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes by George Balanchine to music by Sergei Prokofiev (1928–29). The libretto, based on the parable in the Gospel of Luke, was by Boris Kochno, who added a good deal of drama and emphasized the theme of sin and redemption ending with the Prodigal Son's return.

In early April 2014, artistic director Iain Webb announced that Graziano would become the company's resident choreographer in 2015. The announcement came at the end of a performance in which Graziano had excelled, both in Ashton's Birthday Offering and in Symphony of Sorrow which he choreographed himself. [3]

Iain Webb is an English ballet dancer and choreographer who formerly danced for the Royal Ballet in London. He is currently artistic director of Florida's Sarasota Ballet where he has staged many of Frederick Ashton's ballets.

Birthday Offering is a pièce d'occasion in one scene choreographed by Frederick Ashton to music by Alexander Glazunov, arranged by Robert Irving. The ballet was created in 1956, to celebrate the Royal Ballet’s 25th anniversary. The first performance took place on 5 May 1956 at the Royal Opera House, London.

Awards

Graziano won first prize at the Festival de Joinville in 2002 and in the Festival de Ribeirão Preto in 2003. In 2007, he received the Lefkowitz Award for Artistic Achievement at the International Ballet Competition in New York. [4]
