The Akron Zips men's basketball team represents the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. The team currently competes in the Mid-American Conference East division. The Zips are currently coached by John Groce. Prior to becoming members of the MAC in 1992, the Zips were members of the Ohio Valley Conference and the Mid-Continent Conference. They had played in NCAA Division II into the mid 1970s, where they reached the National Championship Game twice, both of which they lost.

The team plays its home games at the 11,015-seat Houck Stadium. They are coached by Tom Matukewicz.

They finished the season 24–7, 14–4 in OVC play to finish in second place. They won the OVC tournament to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Southeast Missouri State was the No. 13 seed in the West region and they lost to LSU in the opening round. This was the only time the Redhawks had participated in the Men’s Division I NCAA Tournament until the 2022–23 season.

The Redhawks, led by third-year head coach Brad Korn, played their home games at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri as members of the Ohio Valley Conference. They finished the season 19–17, 10–8 in OVC play to finish a three-way tie for third place. As No. 5 seed in the OVC tournament, the defeated Lindenwood, Tennessee State, Moorehead State, and Tennessee Tech to win the conference championship. As a result, they received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament for the second time in school history and first since 2000. As a No. 16 seed in the South region, they lost to Texas A&M–Corpus Christi in the First Four.
